"Good swim?" Orlan was perchd in the edge ofthe dock.

"Yes, actually," Supaka nodded as she ran the towel through her hair. "It's a beautiful day for it."

"WHo went with you today?"

"Human or dolphin?"

"Dolphin."

"Oh, now let me see. There were about five of them. There was... Sed and Pim... and Pal and Fess... and one more." She ticked them off again on her fingers. "Ah, yes, Meso."

Orlan was impressed. "That's neat. It's not often so many will come to swim."

"They're curious about me," the journeyman grinned. "They all want to know about the new Hall resident."

"I remeber when they where that cerious about me. Or mabye it was myy father but they's come to see me."

Supaka stopped toweling her hair a moment and studied the boy. "You're Master Mosler's son?"

"Yeha." He hoped she wouldn't treat him any diffrently because of it.

"Are you apprenticed?" she asked curiously. Just because he was the son of a Hallmaster didn't necessarily mean he would be following in his footsteps.

"yep." he didn't mention the fact that he wasn't overly happy to be an apprentice, not anymore.

"I bet your father's proud you chose dolphineering," she smiled. Supaka knew she would be proud of any craft her daughter took up, though not every craft welcomed women in the south.

The boy shrugged. "I guess so."

"You don't sound so sure," the journeyman smiled.

"Sometimes it hard to tell."

Supaka wrapped the towel around her waist. "What's hard to tell?"

"If he's proud or not, we've never been that close."

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that." She truly was. It would break her heart if Selka grew up and wasn't close to her.

The boy shrugged, "No big deal, really."

Supaka tried to give him a genuine smile. "Well, I suppose you might be in one of my classes then."

"What do you teach?"

"I'm taking over Journeyman Renner's classes while he is away." She had heard of course just what had happened to her predecessor. Though she had never met the man, she had heard of him through reputation, and was deeply saddened to hear what had happened to him.

"Why did he do it? Do you know?"

"Renner? I really don't know. I wasn't here at the time." Or course there were rumors going around - his never having recovered from the death of his dolphin partner, genetic disposition, a jilted love affair, true psychosis, a need for sympathy and attention...

Orlan shurgged, he got the same answer from everyone he asked.

"Did you know Journeyman Renner at all?" Supaka asked curiously.

"Not much, he taught the class. I never saw him around much or anything."

"Hmm." That was too bad. He had been a great dolphineer. Hopefully he could eventually come back from whatever it was that sent him to the edge. "Well, Orlan, I better pick up my daughter from her fostermothers. But I will see you in class?"

"Yeah, it's not like I can ditch and get away with it."

"Not really," Supaka chuckled. "Not now that I've seen your face at least."

"I was thinking more my father's firelizard." she smiled.

"Your father's keeping an eye on you then?"

"I guess he is. It seems like he doesn't trust me."

"I'm sure that's not true. I'm sure he just worries about you." Supaka knew first hand how hard it was to know she would not be able to protect her own child from every possible hurt.

"Funny way of showing it."

She shrugged. Supaka knew better than to get into the middle of a family despute where she didn't belong. "Well, I'll be the one you need to worry about if I find you skipping my class," she said with a wink.

"I'll keep that in mind." with that the boy dove off the dock, heading for the dolphin pod.
