Description: K'ran and Jeyme sort through a Wing dispute.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 5 of Turn 9
Jeyme stepped forward, suddenly thinking that all of those times she
dealt with D'hol's mercurial temper really served her well when dealing
with tense moments, "When I walked up there seemed to be words exchanged
between T'ket and Selyna in regards to the thrown bag. D'valis and
T'kala were both apart of the initial confrontation although I am not
sure as to what part they played."
K'ran's eyes unfocused for a brief moment while he told Rogueth to get a
report from the dragons. Then he fixed a stare on Selyna. "What do you
think happened, greenrider?"
"I was running resupply in our drill, Wey - Wingleader," she corrected
fast but not fast enough others didn't hear it. "I threw a firestone
sack to D'valis as ordered. He missed the catch. It fell down a level
and hit T'ket. When we landed after drills, T'ket came over and accused
me of being poorly trained."
"And how did this confrontation between you involve so many?" he asked.
"Because when he insulted me T'kala spoke up, D'valis came in to share
his opinion, and then B'lami called me proddy," she said, shooting a
venomous glare at B'lami. Pausing, and adding, "Sir." very quietly.
He looked at D'valis. "Was she assigned to throw to you and the catch
was not made?"
"She was assigned to throw to me, sir, but the throw was short so the
catch was not made." D'valis recounted and while his tone toward K'ran
was respectful, his green eyes cut hard at Selyna.
The greenrider's gaze narrowed and she opened her mouth. Then shut it,
seeing the expression on the rankers' faces.
"And that's when it hit T'ket," he stated. He looked at the rider in
question. "And why did you confront her after the drill, instead of
speaking to one of the staff first?"
There was a visible tic in T'ket's clenched jaw, because he knew that no
matter what he said he would be in the wrong for having confronted
Selyna instead of waiting and speaking K'ran or Jeyme afterwards. "My
frustration got the better of me because she seems to make mistakes
often and I was injured because of it."
Selyna's jaw was also tight and her hands were clenched, a flush from
her anger visible even on her dark skin.
K'ran nodded. He looked at the others involved. "And so the rest of you
saw this conflict, and none of you called for the Wingthird or myself,
but instead all involved in this?"
B'lami snapped out, "Because everyone knows you're going to take the
side of the sharding Bluff riders. Wingleader."
T'kala's eyes were wide, and a ripple of awkward tension seemed to
spread through those gathered. No one had dared to challenge K'ran
before, not the Dolphin Cove riders, nor the River Bluff riders. The
bluerider looked down at the toes of his boots, unable to even sneak a
peek at K'ran's face.
"It's obvious that the River Bluff folk all defend each other, and
you're from there."
K'ran did his best job to keep a neutral expression on his face no
matter what people said to him. The bronzerider had heard *a lot* of
insults before. But with a direct challenge like that, well, could he
really be blamed for curling his hand into a fist by his side? He
covered it by moving it behind his back and grasping it with his other
hand. He narrowing his eyes and B'lami and cleared his throat.
"Is there an accusation of favoritism within the wing you wish to
formally level?" he asked.
The bluerider bit his lip. Only now did he realized how much he'd messed
up. "Sir, I."
K'ran cut him off. "Your Wingthird Impressed here. I flew here before I
flew at River Bluff, and I flew at Dragonsfall. Many riders who were
last at River Bluff had also transferred. We are all. dragonriders. in
the same Wing." he emphasized. "We are *wingmates* in Rapids and we rely
on each other now. Thread doesn't care where you Impressed or where
you've flown. The minute you let your conflicts over who came from where
matter more than your focus on drills, you leave yourself and your
wingmates open to risks in Fall. Maybe you," he pinned T'ket with his
gaze, "Don't cover Selyna in time and she's scored. Is fighting over a
sack now really worth that?"
Through the whole lecture, his tone was flat and cold as the snows at
the peaks of Dragonsfall.
Jeyme had only known K'ran for the few months that she'd been back at
Dolphin Cove, but she'd never heard him speak in such a tone. It wasn't
the scorching, skin peeling tone that D'hol would have used, nor even a
tone that she'd heard the Weyrleader use, but it was effective. Before
her eyes she could see the shoulders of the Rapids Wingriders' sagging
beneath the weight of their Wingleader's disappointment.
"No sir, it's not," T"ket answered K'ran, looking thoroghly chastised
for the moment.
The rest of the errant wingriders bowed their head and murmured, "No,
Wingleader," in various levels of chastisement and apology. Even B'lami,
who had never really respected K'ran for being foreign and short and had
wondered how he'd ever gotten a Weyrleadership, felt the intensity of
that disapproval and understood it now.
"All of you go back to your weyrs. You're grounded for the rest of the
night. No watches, no sweeps, no visitors. Take this time to consider
your behavior towards your wingmates and the risks that brings. We'll
meet tomorrow to discuss further consequences."
He recognized that his temper was getting the best of him and it would
get much worse if he had to look at them any longer. He also knew that
he needed to talk to Jeyme about how to handle this before he flew
further off the handle.
"Any questions?" he added.
"No sir," T'kala murmured with the rest of the riders gathered, although
his voice was a touch sullen. He hadn't done anything wrong! All he had
tried to do was broker peace between T'ket and Selyna.
Jeyme watched as they all turned and walked away, she noted that not a
word was spoken among them. That left just her and K'ran.
"Want to grab a drink while we discuss it?" she asked, knowing that he
would want to go over what had happened.
"Yes. Faranth, I need it," he said with a sigh.
