Description: Riveenata and K'lvin catch up on the bronzerider's new found freedom.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 20 of Turn 9
The Queen's Wing drilled in the early morning when it was cool, and so
it was mid-day before Savith was able to get her meal. The green was
an irritable flyer when she was hungry, but if Savith was allowed to
feed before she drilled, she'd be stuffed and fly far worse. So
Riveenata had lived with her temper and kept her under control, and
now that the drills were over and her flying gear was removed, the
green was desperate to eat.
She flew to the pens, and saw several other dragons there, some also
hunting and some eating the kills they'd already made. Savith rose up
into the air to circle the pen and study the herdbeasts, and then,
impatient for her meal, dove for one - blowing right into the path of
another dragon who'd been hunting - only to stampede it right into the
middle of some more beasts. The green had to pull up to circle again
and let out a frustrated call.
Riveenata had jogged to the pens just in time to see Savith cut off
another dragon and prevent them both from getting fed. She sighed in
exasperation. **Well, if you hadn't been so impatient, you could have
let him make his kill and then used it as a distraction to make yours.
Now neither of you have one,** she mentally scolded.
She turned away from Savith, her light blue eyes scanning the other
riders near the pen looking for anyone she knew, until they alighted
onto K'lvin's familiar form. They'd had a few more board games since
their dance at Panitath's Hatching, but since she'd gotten cleared
back to the wings there'd been a little less time.
She headed over. "Hi there," she greeted. "How are you and Xmrenth?"
"I am well, he's a little less pleased over a particular green nearly
crashing into him over the feeding pens." An amused grin tugged at the
corner of K'lvin's mouth as he turned towards the familiar voice.
K'lvin had come to enjoy the greenrider's sporadic company, although
he hadn't realized it until she'd returned to normal duty. Now he was
on his own again, trying to occupy his time with the menial tasks
fitting a 'retired' rider. In truth, it was driving K'lvin insane, the
amount of time he felt was on his hands. After the duties of a
Wingleader, and constantly keeping himself busy with work, he still
hadn't adjusted to the extra time.
"I know we're supposed to defend our own dragons because they're our
other halves, but that was a bad choice on her part. I would not blame
him if he snarled at her over that," she said.
"Xmrenth? Snarl at a lady? Never. He'd prefer to just grumble to me."
K'lvin looked back out to see that Xmrenth had plucked a different
beast from the heard and was settled on his back haunches enjoying his
lunch. "So how are things going in the Wing?" he asked, looking back
to Riveenata.
"It's nice to do drills. Savith and I appreciate not to have night
watches. Though shifting my schedule back was difficult."
K'lvin found himself longing for just that problem, having to suddenly
shift his life as a retired rider, back to that of a wingrider. "I can
imagine," he settled for saying, and then added, "although I'm trying
not to be jealous."
Catching his meaning, she suddenly feels bad. She hadn't meant to
remind him of what he couldn't do anymore. "I had been thinking about
the switching from being up all night to back to a more diurnal
schedule," she said, yawning.
She remembered they'd talked over a couple things he could do. "Did
you ever speak to the goldriders?"
"Not yet. I had to be medically cleared to do even small things." Like
having sex. That had been a great conversation when the young, newly
transferred journeywoman healer had told him he was okay to resume
"romantic activities" with a bright blush across her cheeks. Not that
there had been an inkling of "romantic" anything in K'lvin's life
since Bahji died. He was still restricted to "non-stress" related
duties, a strict diet, and exercise. He worried that trying to get a
little more work with the retired riders might count as an added stress,
and then he would be right back where he started.
"What are you allowed to do now? Did they have to clear you for the
feast dancing? because you did well." Her eyes sparkled as she
remembered. They'd had fun.
"I can do more manual labor now, washing Xmrenth, weight lifting
exercises, and the like." He decidedly did not mention what had made
the journeywoman blush. "The dancing was my own choice, so luckily it
didn't kill me." K'lvin smiled a little.
She answered his small smile with a brighter one of her own. "Did you
get cleared for any additional kinds of flying?"
"Well," he glanced out at Xmrenth, who had plucked up another beast,
"he's happy because he can participate in flights again. We've been
cleared to fly casually, like transports, but still banned from
Threadfall."
"Is he at least looking to flights and transports?" She wasn't sure if
Xmrenth was bored but she was sure his rider was.
"Xmrenth and I are geared similarly. We want to work, be active, so
he's looking forward to doing more than spending every day finding a
different spot to sun."
She laughed. "Want to keep us company on Search sometime? It's not
like we're actively going now since the last clutch just hatched. I'm
looking forward to the next goldflight so there's a regular cycle
again."
Her laugh made him smile again. "Sure, Xmrenth enjoys meeting possible
Candidates, and I like seeing all of the different locations."
"I know she'd love his company. And, to be honest, having a
bronzerider along will really help reception at some of the smaller
holds."
"Of course. Just let us know whenever the two of you head out and we'll
be there."
"I promise I will," she said. "Are there any other activities you're
hoping to do?"
K'lvin chuckled and rubbed a calloused hand across the back of his neck,
"Well, since you're going to drag it out of me. I suppose I am looking
forward to sex as well, since I've been cleared."
"Hopefully Xmrenth will win all of the flights. After all, it's a whole
new Weyr of greens for him!" she teased.
The bronzerider barked out a laugh of surprise, "That sounds more like
a curse than a blessing!"
She laughed at his laugh, thinking it was very pleasant to see him in
a moment of good spirits. "I guess your opinion and his differ there.
So much for the rumors of all bronzeriders wanting to win every green-
and gold-flight."
K'lvin watched as Xmrenth finished his meal and passed by overhead,
casting a large shadow over them as he looked for a warm rock to
lounge on. "Winning too many flights is exhausting, besides, I'd
rather just choose outright who I sleep with." The bronzerider tipped
his head to Riveenata as he took a retreating step backward, "Thank
you for the conversation. It kept me on my toes as usual."
"Happy to be of service," she said. "We'll see you around, especially
when Search time comes."
