T'kala was whistling brightly as he strolled through the lower
caverns, a crate of jingling bottles from the Vintner Hall rested in
his arms. They were apparently a little gift to the Headwoman,
something about her husband's family? T'kala hadn't even realized that
the Headwoman was married but then he supposed he'd never really asked
either.
"Hey," he spotted a familiar head peeking around a corner, "Aviday,
what are you -"
"Shhh!" She grabbed T'kala, yanking him around the corner and put up a
finger to her mouth. " Peeking around the corner again, she waited,
shifting from foot to foot until the blonde woman she'd been avoiding
left a storage room, a rumpled man that Aviday didn't recognize
following behind her. Her nose wrinkled as the man patted her mother's
bottom as they walked. Exhaling she sighed and and leaned against the
wall in relief.
T'kala peeked around the corner to see what they had been hiding from,
and caught a glimpse of Daturna just as the woman rounded the corner
on the far end of the hall. "Ah, I see." Daturna's reputation at River
Bluff had been well known, so T'kala wasn't surprised that it was
continuing now that they were at Dolphin Cove.
Aviday plopped down on her bottom, leaned against the wall, then
peered up at T'kala. "You'd think she'd use something more original
than a storage room. Shards, I never know if I'm going to find her in
one anytime I open a door. You remember the first time that happened?
I couldn't look at her for a month. "
The bluerider looked around, set the crate down, and then slid down to
sit beside of Aviday. "I remember." T'kala hooked an arm around her
neck and drew her into a brotherly half-hug. "You ever considered
transferring Weyrs?"
She shook her head stubbornly. " No. She's still my mama and there's
going to be eggs on the Sands here. Besides, she's all I really got
right now. " She returned the hug. "I like it here, anyways. It's nice
and warm and pretty. When I get boobs, T'kala, I'm going to run around
the lake in the skimpiest top I can find to show them off. "
T'kala groaned, head tilting back to rest against the wall as he
covered his eyes. "No, don't say that. Tell me that you are going to
wear sweaters up to your neck for the rest of your life."
"Shards, no! I'm just waiting on 'em to show up! And tight stuff once
I get a butt too. Then everyone will know that's what I got and I'm
not a boy. I've had three boys interested in me, T'kala. Three! But
that's cause they thought I was one too! Do you know how frustrating
that is?" She paused eyeing him. "No, cause you Impressed a blue."
"It seems we have opposite problems. I can't get a guy to be
interested in me, but shells if some females aren't, and the women
don't seem to understand that just because I ride a blue doesn't mean
I like both." T'kala had never had any sexual interest in women. He'd
really been surprised that he hadn't Impressed to a green, but Dagreth
was as blue as they came. "So you're going to sprout boobs and a butt,
what am I supposed to do to attract more men?"
"Well, I'm not, cause sorry, you're cute and all that, but eww." She
grinned impishly at him, dimples deep in her cheeks. A devilish gleam
lit in her eyes. "Get a bigger manhood then go dancing in the bathing
chambers right after drills to show it off?" She hopped up and shook
her slim hips. "You know, like flip it in a circle or something. I
saw one greenrider do that and I swear he had the whole room
applauding."
T'kala roared with laughter at the way Aviday was acting the scene
out, mostly because he'd seen similar things himself. "So much for
trying to keep you innocent," he said as he caught his breath from
laughing and pushed to his feet. He hefted the crate of wine bottles
back into his arms. "Walk with me, I have to take this to the
Headwoman's office."
"With a mama like mine, do you really think I don't know about stuff?"
She snorted. "Please. She thinks I should be already mothing. Do you
need help with that? I can take a few bottles or something. " Aviday
started walking beside him. "I am though, you know...I mean I haven't
_done_ it."
"I've got it," T'kala assured her as they walked, and then in response
to her untainted virginity, "and there's no need to rush it! You're
only fourteen! There's still plenty of time." He didn't want to see
her as anything other than the little girl from the creche that he'd
grown up with at River Bluff.
"That's what I think. But mama, she thinks I should get busy like
right now because she did. Listening to her talk about it all the time
makes not want to do it at _all_. Every time I see her she asks if
I've, " she made air quotes with her fingers, " 'taken care of my
problem'. That's why I've been trying to just avoid her. I'm worried
she'll set me up with someone herself if she notices me."
"Hey, if a man even looks at you, I'm going to rip his head off." He
leaned in to whisper, "And not the one on his shoulders either."
T'kala winked and then added, "I mean, at least until your boobs grow
in, you know."
She grinned up at him and hugged his side. "I'll remember you said
that. Too bad you're not my real brother. That would be kind of
awesome. I've always wanted one. "
"Avi, you are my sister in all the ways that count."
She grinned and hugged him again, keeping her arm around him as they
walked. "You're a pretty awesome brother then, T'kala. Hey, if you're
my brother... then you'll like beat people up for me, right? Do
brother stuff?"
"Of course, what kind of brother would I be if I didn't?" T'kala said
as they reached the Headwoman's office.
"Good." She thought of the weyrbrat girls who sometimes teased her for
being so flat. "I'll remember that too."
