D'hol

D'hol

The familiar wing bands confirmed to Sh'del that the bronze coming in
to land was indeed Yumath. Patiently he waited for the large dragon to
land before relaying to his brown **Let Yumath's know I wanted a quick
chat with him** His little green flit, Trouble, flew ahead of him as
he walked up to the pair.

D'hol dismounted easily, but before stripping Yumath of his straps,
waited as Sh'del approached. "Sh'del." He pulled off his riding helmet
and tucked it under his arms. "What can I do for you?"

"Just checking up on the weyrlings. How're they doing? Any trouble or
anyone struggling?" Even though the riders were technically no longer
weyrlings, to Sh'del anyone that had been under his care would always
be 'weyrlings.' Maybe he just needed to settle down and start a
family, he grumbled to himself.

"A few are, yes. But, it's to be expected. Most do for for the first
few months. A few injuries and strains, but nothing serious. They
have to learn their limits, mostly. I run a hard wing. You know that."

"I know." Sh'del looked at some of the wing, trying to pick out some
of the weyrlings. "Has young V'rerren settled in okay? His green doing
okay?" Of all the weyrlings, it was this boy who was the most unsure
of himself. Sh'del held his breath waiting for the answer and tried
not to look like a worried auntie.

D'hol arched a brow and spoke dryly. "I haven't eaten him." He glanced
back where his wing was settling before he gave the order to disband
for the afternoon. "He's adapting. I've paired him with another green
and Timassa is also keeping an eye on his dragon. She hasn't built up
as much stamina as I'd like, so they'll have to work harder."

"Glad to hear you haven't eaten him, as he'd make pretty poor fare."
Sh'del grinned, remembered just how skinny the boy had been as a
candidate. Turning serious again, he said, "Yes, Merenth was never a
strong dragon but she tries at least. Speaking of weaker greens, is
Ferenth and Juella settling in okay?" They were another pair Sh'del
had kept a worried eye on all through weyrling training.

"He's not exactly to my taste. Wrong gender." D'hol peered back at the
wing and waved a hand at them to dismiss. "Ferenth and Juella aren't
doing as well. I was actually going to approach you, K'sedel and
N'vanik about putting her back in the Weyrling wing or at least in
Cyradis' wing. She's old enough, but quite frankly, she lacks the
emotional maturity for a fighting wing. Ferenth got a wingtip score
and she nearly panicked. She's not ready for an upper wing yet."

"Bring her back to us for a bit, then I'll see what Cyradis wants to
do." Sh'del wasn't surprised. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised. "A
lot of times those types can be corrected just with their dragon's
strengths but Ferenth has always been unsure of herself. I'll send my
flit with a message to her to come see me later this afternoon. Any
more problem types?"

"Ferenth did far better than her rider. I think being around older
greens has helped her. It's Juella that panicked, not Ferenth." He
considered the rest of the wing. "Not more than the usual necessary
adjustment to a fighting wing, I think. The rest will settle after a
few more Falls and will fit in to the wing just fine."

"Oh good," Sh'del said with a smile. "Is there anything you think us
Weyrling staff can do to make your job easier?"

He considered the question for a moment, brow furrowed. "Perhaps.
Have you considered allowing the senior weyrlings to drill with the
fighting wings on occasion? That way it may be easier for them to
adjust once they're placed."

"That's a fine idea. I'll mark it down and run it past L'pin. Anything else?"

"It may be a good idea to allow the Wingleaders, 'Seconds or 'Thirds
to interview the senior weyrlings as well. Get an idea of their
personalities for ourselves. We each run our wings differently and
there are some personality clashes. We all watch them, of course, and
have a good idea of their skills, but personally, I want to make sure
that they're a good fit."

"Sounds good." Sh'del marked it down on the small pad of paper he was carrying. "Well, with that I'd like to catch K'ran for an update before he gets busy. Good day to you."
