Aviday

Aviday

---

Tisafelle walked into the Candidate's barracks, ignoring the drudge
dragging the heavy box of her belongings who followed. Her eyes
studied her surroundings with both interest and a bit of hidden
dismay. There were cots filling the room and absolutely no privacy.
Where was she to change? Where were dressers or cabinets or even a
wardrobe for her things? She had assumed she'd at most be sharing with
another person, which was mildly tolerable, but this?

It didn't take much to attract Aviday's wandering eye, especially when
she was supposed to be sweeping. The entrance of this new girl managed
to do just that, and Aviday promptly abandoned her broom. "Hi! You
must be new. I'm Aviday." The younger girl looked around at the large
case that the drudge had finally let drop to the ground. "Wow...you
have a lot of stuff. If you're a Candidate, I don't know that you'll
have enough room for all of that. We usually just have a few things
that we tuck under our beds and..."

"Hold, boy, this _is_ the Candidate barracks?" Tisafelle hid a deeper
frown that she felt more than showed. "There aren't rooms available? I
thought perhaps the girls at least had _some_ privacy."

"I'm not a boy." Aviday replied with an irritated sigh. "I'm a girl.
And this _is_ the girls section. The boy's is over that way behind the
big curtain. We're all girls here. We don't need privacy from each
other. We all have the same bits."

Looking down her nose at Aviday, Tisafelle arched a brow and the
smaller girl. "You don't look like one." She sniffed and looked down
at the scrap of hide she had been given, then looked around at the
cots.

Aviday flushed with immediate embarrassment and crossed her arms over
her chest in a protective gesture. It didn't help that she didn't have
anything much to protect. "That's rude."

"I don't really care." Tisafelle began to walk down the line of cots,
glancing down periodically and then upwards. "Get over it." She found
what was supposed to be her cot, passed it by and then found one that
had more light and a pleasant breeze and then waved at the drudge.
"Bring my things."

"She doesn't have to lug that around for you. She's not a servant."
Aviday protested. "And that's _my_ bed."

Tisafelle turned and rolled her eyes. "The other one is too small and
dim. You're small. You can have it. Besides, you don't need good
lighting. I do."

"No, I've slept there for nearly a turn! You can't just take it over!"
Aviday's flush wasn't due solely to embarrassment now, but the
beginnings of frustrated anger at the pure gall and arrogance of the
newcomer. "That's not how things work here. You're _assigned_ a cot."

"And I just switched. You, drudge. Over here." She waved at the
obviously dim-witted drudge, who sighed and dragged the box over,
leaving it beside Tisafelle before quickly leaving to escape the
demanding young woman. "If you have to whine about it..." She dug
inside of a heavy pouch at her side and pulled out an eighth of a
mark, tossing it towards Aviday. "Now, go away."

Quick reflexes acted to catch the small piece of wood, stamped with
the Tannercraft symbol. Aviday rarely got marks of any kind so was
shocked with the blithe manner that it had been tossed to her. She
really didn't need the bed that badly, but it was the principle of the
thing! The bed wasn't worth the mark, she decided. Her hands
tightened around the mark and she grabbed at her own small case,
scowling as she dragged it away to the smaller cot.

Tisafelle smirked as she sat on her new bed and looked around. She
could stay here, she decided. It wasn't so bad to change in front of
other girls, besides, she needed to know what they were like. Surely
they weren't all like _that_ pathetic thing.
