Dorana knocked on the door to the Headwoman's office, feeling pleased
all over again that she had navigated the stairs from where she had
been to here with no difficulty. And also no falling. Perhaps most of
all, no falling!
"Come in," Chaysea called, disturbing Company from his sleeping spot
on her shoulder as she turned in her chair. The brown firelizard moved
grumpily down to his pillow on the corner of Chaysea's and curled up
into a tight ball, snout tucked beneath his back feet.
Dorana opened the door and peeked her head in, "You wanted to see me?"
She smiled as she spoke, her enjoyment of completing the relatively
unimpressive task of successfully navigating the stairways and
hallways without loss of life or limb still playing about her
features.
"Please, have a seat," Chaysea instructed, eyes flicking down to
Dorana's legs as she entered. "Are you feeling back to your normal
self, yet?" she asked.
"Oh yes, crutches free and a clean bill of health," Dorana grinned.
"The healer said unless I fall down another flight of stairs the knee
shouldn't pop out again now." The knee had given her more problems
than the fractured ankle had, occasionally popping out of joint and
requiring her to keep a brace on and use crutches long after the rest
of her injuries had healed.
"That's good news," Chaysea said around a grimace, imagining how
painful that must have been for Dorana. "It's good to have you back on
two feet." The Headwoman settled more comfortable in her chair.
"Although, while you were injured and completing reports and doing
hidework I noticed that you seem to have a knack for it."
"I did well in my harper classes," Dorana shrugged. "It wasn't so very
difficult. The hardest part was figuring out the system in place. Once
I did that, it was easy." There was a pattern to the ordering and
receiving and dispatching and use of supplies and a method to the
storage and tracking of them too. There was even a pattern to
assignments and duties, though she knew that already, having worked
within it for turns both before and after she'd aged out.
"Well, if you are interested, I could use a Headwoman's Assistant to
oversee the Candidate Barracks. You would be in charge of making sure
their supplies remained stocked, that their barracks remain clean, and
so on. They have cleaning duties as a part of their chores, but
sometimes they need reminding," Chaysea grinned a little. As the
Weyr's Headwoman, Chaysea oversaw all of the Master Crafters, the
living arrangments of the Candidates and their chores, as well as the
kitchens' garden, and the supply of runnerbeasts to fill the Feeding
Pens. A good assistant was irreplaceable and a rare treasure to find.
"Really?" Dorana beamed. "I am very interested, thank you!"
The last two turns working in the Weyr as a drudge had been both
similar and very different to being a Candidate. As a Candidate, she'd
had chores, many of which were basically the same work she did now.
So, that was the same. But there had been more variety in the day as a
Candidate. There had been classes to go to, for example. She'd had
less freedom as a Candidate, but less responsibility as well. Mostly
though, it was the variety she'd missed. Drudge work was not exactly
challenging. Being promoted to an Assistant position would change
that.
"It would be a lot of hidework with inventory and purchasing, and you
would report directly to me. You would also have a few drudges working
under you. You've already proven to me that you have an eye for detail
when it comes to the hidework. Do you think you would feel comfortable
being in charge of other workers?" Chaysea asked.
"I think I could, yes." Despite her mother's outcast status with her
own family, and her father's lowly birth, she had been raised with all
the education a well-born girl might get. Including how to deal fairly
with any staff working for her potential husband's hypothetical
holding. It had been a while since she'd used that knowledge, but it
was there.
"Why don't we set up a trial run then?" Chaysea suggested with a
smile. "We'll give it a month and if you're still feeling comfortable
and fitting into the role well, then we'll continue it."
"That sounds good, thank you Headwoman. When would you like me to start?"
"The beginning of next sevenday would be fine. I already have things
covered in the Candidate Barracks until then."
"Excellent, I'll just continue my regular duties until then." She felt
so pleased, she thought she might write home. What will I do if I
don't Impress, indeed! I could become Headwoman someday.
Maybe she'd even send the letter this time.
