Ranni

Ranni

"Ranni's not my real name," she confessed, watching as R'nar's fingers trailed through the ends of her long black hair.

"It's not? What next? Are you a Holdless spy planning a coup against the Weyr?" he teased, his fingers brushing against her bare shoulders as he continued to run his hand through her hair. It never ceased to amaze him how silky her hair was.

Ranni rolled her eyes, but the corners of her mouth twitched. "No," she rolled over to look at him, making sure that the sheet remained firmly tucked around her body as she did. "My full name is 'Averanni' but my mother always just called me 'Ranni' growing up, and it stuck. Most people don't even know that Ranni isn't my full name."

"Averanni," R'nar tried the name out on his tongue. "I like it. I'll use it when you're in trouble."

"Then you'll be using it a lot," she said with a lift of her eyebrows.

"Or maybe I'll just use it in the bedroom," R'nar hooked his leg over hers beneath the sheet, using it to pull her closer to him.

"Not if you want to see me naked more," she warned.

R'nar laughed. "More? We've been sharing a bed for the last two sevendays, nearly, and you still keep a sheet wrapped around you."

Ranni pulled the sheet up to her chin. "I could insist on only sex in the dark."

"I concede, I concede." R'nar lifted both of his hands.

"Good choice."

}:We're going to be late to wing drills if you don't finish your flight and get dressed.:{ Iorath insisted.

R'nar sighed and kicked off the sheets. "I have to get going or I am going to be late for drills."

Ranni stayed in the bed, watching R'nar as he strode nude around the room, picking up his clothes and pulling them on a piece at a time. A fortnight ago she never would have thought she would be so comfortable looking at a man or lying in bed with a man, but the first night she had spent with R'nar had been eye-opening. She finally understood why some women seemed so willing to spread their legs in order to obtain rank or to persuade their husbands to do things the way they wanted.

The bronzerider tucked his shirt into his pants, pushed his belt through his pant loops, and turned to look at Ranni as he did. She looked great lying in his bed, he decided. It had surprised him how willing she had been to return to his bed since it had taken such convincing to get her to join him in it the first time.

"Stay as long as you like," he told her, walking around to her side of the bed. "I'll see you at evening meal?"

"I'll be there," she confirmed.

R'nar leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead. Kissing was the one thing that he still hadn't won Ranni over on. The sex, that she enjoyed it would seem, but kissing was apparently another line of intimacy that she wasn't ready to cross.

"Bye." He twisted a strand of her hair around his finger one last time before straightening and jogging out to Iorath, who was waiting impatiently on their weyrledge.

Ranni puffed out a sigh once the bronzeirder was gone. A part of her still felt a little guilty. R'nar was making it clear to her that he was developing feelings but Ranni wasn't sure what "feelings" even felt like. She didn't mind spending time with the bronzerider, and while the sex was nice, the real driving factor behind it was her desire to so implant herself in his life that there would never be a reason for her to return to Sunstone ever again.

Was there really something so wrong with what she was doing? R'nar was happy, and his happiness guaranteed her protection. **I really have become just like all the other Hold women,** she thought.

With a sigh she tossed back the sheet and swung her feet down to the floor. She grabbed her sun dress and pulled it over her head. If only she Impressed at the upcoming Hatching, then she wouldn't have to worry so much about finding a place at the Weyr. A dragon would be the ultimate form of protection, but until then, she needed R'nar.
