Will There Be A Problem?

Writers: Cali, Eimi, Yvonne
Date Posted: 28th March 2006

Characters: J'nus, S'rak, Kenza
Description: J'nus meets with S'rak and Kenza to discuss his promotion
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 16 of Turn 3

J'nus didn't know quite what to feel as he let himself out of the
Weyrleader's office and quietly shut the door behind himself. Leading
a Wing... it was certainly something he'd thought about, and wanted,
for a while. But he wasn't sure if he liked the _way_ he'd inherited
Cyan. **Although I suppose it's better than replacing a Wingleader
lost in Threadfall,** he thought wryly, starting down the hall that
would lead him back to his cluttered weyr.

But there was still S'rak... who _had_ been leading Cyan Wing right
after they lost U'kaiah. And Kenza... shards and shells, what would
she think? And then there was U'kaiah himself. A good enough
Wingleader, but perhaps a little young for the position, since he
hadn't been able to hold up under stress.

Kopth interrupted his thoughts, sounding a little smug. }:Shall I
call Radith's and Solith's riders to you? They need to be told that
_we_ are leading.:{

**What, now?**

}:Yes now! Why later?:{

J'nus thought for a moment. It was one thing to be told that you were
Wingleader - and another entirely to break it to the people that
_weren't_. **Because I don't have an office?**

}:Meet them in your weyr,:{ Kopth shot back. }:They need to know.:{

**I can't meet them in there! It's a mess!** Shards - _that_ would be
a good first impression.

}:Then clean it, but clean it fast. I've already told them that you
wish a meeting.:{ Kopth sounded very pleased with himself.

J'nus grit his teeth and felt his temper rise. Sharding dragon.

The bronzerider had just enough time to make it back to his weyr move
piles of hides, books, and various bits of wood off of three
armchairs by the fire. He was just straightening up after sticking
the last armload into a closet when someone knocked on the door.
"It's open!"

Kenza strolled in, her eyebrows going up as she surveyed the chairs
near the fire. "I'd wondered where we were going to sit."

"Ha ha." J'nus rolled his eyes. "I was going to offer you a glass of
wine, but after that little comment I'm not sure if you deserve one."

"After the past few days, I'd say I _certainly_ deserve one," Kenza
retorted, sinking into the chair closest to the fire and stretching
her legs out.

"I'll take one too." S'rak said with a nod as he entered the weyr. He
had wondered why J'nus had wanted to speak with him, but seeing Kenza

already seated, he had a pretty good idea, and a drink was definetly
in order.

"S'rak," J'nus said by way of greeting, then turned to find his stash
of wine. He pulled out a bottle and displayed it against his forearm
for his guests. "Is red all right?"

No need for a show... "Perfect."

The bronzerider nodded and turned to uncork the bottle and pour the
wine. The little rituals associated with serving gave him a little
time to figure out exactly what he was going to say. It was one thing
to be told by the Weyrleader that he was going to lead a Wing; it was
another entirely to assert his leadership. He served both
dragonriders a glass in silence before claiming the third chair by
the fireplace for himself. "I can't think of an easy way to say this,
so I'll be blunt. D'wrayt has promoted me to Cyan's Wingleader."

Kenza's eyebrows drew together. "Permenantly?"

**Really...** S'rak tried to keep his face blank. **So much for
D'wrayt realizing what an asset I could be.**

"He says until U'kaiah is back." Whenever that would be.

"Ahhh." Well at least U'kaiah wouldn't be banned forever from leading
a Wing, but loyalty still made Kenza wish she wasn't quite so
approving of D'wrayt's choice. "Well, having a new Wingleader _and_
Wingsecond is going to shake things up a bit."

"Have you any experience leading a Wing?" S'rak asked, hoping the
edge in his voice went unnoticed.

It didn't. J'nus raised an eyebrow. "I have enough."

Kenza rolled her eyes. "Why don't you two strip down and wrestle it
out. At least _that_ might be entertaining for me to watch."

J'nus shot her a black look. That was _not_ helping.

"_Really_ Kenza, don't be so dramatic." S'rak said distainfully,
suddenly developing a headache. "I'm just glad you _do_ have
experience. It can be a hard adjustment from wingrider to
wingleader. If you have any questions though, I hope you know you can
always ask. Between Kenza's time as wingthird, and my many years as
wingsecond and wingleader, I'm sure we've seen it all."

"Thank you for your _kind_ offer, but I've got enough experience of
my own, S'rak," J'nus said dryly. "Kopth and I have been together for
thirty turns and done our fair share of Wingleading during that time,
_especially_ here at Dragonsfall. And on that note, I wanted to let
you both know that I have no intention of altering U'kaiah's Wing
formations or changing our drill schedual - Cyan's had enough trouble
lately without upsetting our routine."

Kenza nodded absently as she swirled the wine around in her glass,
watching it. "What we need right now is a little stability. Hopefully
no one's ego is going to get in the way of what is important, which
is making sure our riders trust their wingleader."

S'rak was starting to fume. Was Kenza insinuating that he had an ego
problem? His only concern was for the wing and good leadership. "I
completely agree Kenza." he said as evenly as possible. "I'm sure
once you've taken the wing for a drill they'll have no problems, they
followed _me_ very well when I lead them in the last Fall."

"They're good riders," she replied easily, not in the least bit
bothered by the fact that S'rak looked annoyed. If she was going to
have to put up with two egotistical bronzeriders for the forseeable
future, she could at least make sure they were as annoyed as she was.
"I know most of their weaknesses and faults, so I can tell where the
trouble will probably pop up."

"I've been riding in Cyan for turns as well, Kenza. I'm not
oblivious." J'nus wished he could take back the growl in his voice as
soon as he'd said it, but shards and shells - it was hard enough to
keep his temper when S'rak was going at him alone! Let alone be
patronized by two dragonriders who were _younger_ than he was... "I
invited you both here to make sure that there won't be any problems
with either of you accepting my leadership. Will there be?"

"Of course there won't be." S'rak said, the headache rapidly turning
into a migrane.

Kenza held up her glass to him and then tossed back its contents as
if it were something far stronger. If only. "Don't look at me. I
accepted the leadership of a boy whose bottom I used to whack when he
tried to steal sweets. And I might tell you what I think in the
privacy of your weyr, J'nus, but in public, you're the wingleader. I
won't undermine that."

The bronzerider supressed a sigh. "Good." It was apparently the best
he could hope for.
