Boys!

Writers: Cali, Shelly
Date Posted: 30th March 2006

Characters: Karri, Kamira
Description: Karri and Kamira catch up on a walk around the lake.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 24 of Turn 3

Kamira's heavy boots crunched softly against the newly fallen snow. She
loved being able to get out and be by herself to think things over. The
solitude and cold was somehow very therapeutic. Ever since her fight
with Birigundi, Kamira hadn't felt quite right, but she didn't know
what to do about it. Finally she had decided that a walk around the
frozen lake would do her good.

Karri had also decided on a walk to clear her mind. When she had been
back at her hold, she had taken them almost daily as soon as she could
slip away in the mornings. Since impressing she had been so busy and
had come to miss the walks. She saw someone down by the lake and
thought she recognized her, "Kamira?"

"Karri!" Kamira was instantly snapped out of her introspective gloom
and cheered by the sight of her friend. "Hello!" She greeted her with a
warm smile and a hug.

"I didn't know you were coming out this way, I would have waited for
you after dinner." Karri missed the time and talks they had so
frequently had while candidates. They still saw each other almost
daily
in classes but it wasn't the same.

"That's all right. I don't think either one of us planned on company
tonight." She shrugged. "So what has your life messed up enough to be
out here?"

"Nothing's..." Karri started to deny that anything was wrong then
smiled, "A boy. How about you?"

"A boy... or perhaps a few of them..." She bit the corner of her lower
lip. "You want to go first or shall I?"

Karri laughed as she shook her head. "You! If you've got a list of
them you might need to take a break half way through to catch your
breath."

"It's not a list!" Kamira was a bit defensive. "It's just two..."

"Let me guess, Birigundi is one of them?" Karri said a bit more
seriously.

"One down, one to go." Kamira wasn't entirely sure that Karri would
guess the second boy - or, actually, man - right off, but it wouldn't
take her long...

Karri groaned, "Oh come on, don't make me guess, there are way too many
immature, egotistical, selfish boys here in this Weyr to narrow it
down!"

"Ah-ah," Kamira scolded. "A man, not a boy. That should narrow it
down."

She fought the urge to roll her eyes, but couldn't quite keep the tease
out of her voice, "Why that wouldn't happen to be the newest bronze
addition to our weyrlingstaff now would it?"

Kamira nodded. "Correct as always." She sighed, her breath steaming in
the cold. "You turn. Who's your trouble?"

Karri shrugged, then looked away. "F'lik. I really thought he liked
me, but lately he's barely said two words to me and I swear he's
avoiding me at mealtimes."

Kamira looked at her friend a bit suspiciously. "And why would he do
that?" Was there something Karri hadn't told her?

"I don't know! That's why I'm so confused. I confronted him about it
and he said nothing was wrong, but it's not like it was before, and I
miss him. Besides you, he was the best friend I had." she replied in
a huff.

Kamira put an arm around her friend's shoulder. "I'm sure he'll come
around. Whatever is making him avoid you, he'll work around it somehow.
You two are too close of friends not to."

"I hope so." Karri sighed as she leaned into Kamira. "You know, you
and Biri are friends too. Have you tried talking to him? I'm sure he
doesn't realize he's being a fool, with whatever he did. He's kind of
got a blind spot when it comes to his actions you know."

"It wasn't his fault," Kamira sighed, "Really it wasn't. But we have
talked a little... At his birthday party we actually had a conversation
without yelling at each other. Things aren't the same between us yet...
but maybe one day they will be..."

Karri nodded, "Things take time I guess. It's just the waiting I hate
so much!" she gave her friend a slight grin. "And U'kaiah?"

Kamira averted her eyes and sighed. "Weyrlinghood is too long."

"For U'kaiah... or for you?" she asked with a knowing smile.

Kamira blushed and smiled a little. "I'm sure it's worse for me than
him. And besides, you can't tell me that you're not starting to get a
bit... anxious, too?"

"Not about _that_," Karri denied with a shrug, though she admitted, "If
there was someone for me to be anxious about, there isn't anymore. In
fact, the longer weyrlinghood lasts the better now, I'm not ready for
Elliath to act like a full grown green."

"Sometimes I'm amazed at those of you who were Searched from the holds.
Life in a weyr is fast paced enough for me and I've always lived here.
I can't really imagine what it must be like getting used to everything
for the first time." Kamira looked at Karri in admiration. "But, living
in a weyr, I do know that everyone who's come out of the holds has
gotten used to it - and you will, too."

Karri nodded, "I'm sure I will, especially with friends like you to
cheer me up when I get overloaded!"

"Well what are friends for?" Kamira smiled and went on happily walking
through the snow with her best friend.
