Having gotten the go ahead to Stand, Ernola headed off towards the
barracks to see if Chaysea was around to tell her where she was to go
and what to do. Note appeared above her head with a trill and settled
on her shoulder, images of all the little green had done the past hour
appearing so quickly that it made Ernola stumble. "Hey, slow down!
You're going to cause an accident," she grumbled and swerved to avoid
crashing into people.
The Headwoman was not to be found in the barracks, but some of the
other Candidates were loitering about, taking advantage of their
candlemark for break. Ranni noticed the new face entering the room and
had planned on avoiding her until their eyes met. "New Candidate?" she
asked. They had been seeing new faces every day lately it seemed.
"Indeed I am," she answered with a grateful smile. Although she knew
the general layout of the Weyr, the finer details would come with
time. "Is the Headwoman nearby? I was going to check the kitchens
next. Oh, I'm Ernola ... what's your name?"
"She's probably in her office," Ranni replied, closing the lid of her
trunk and straightening to brush her hands over her pants. "I'm Ranni.
Why don't I take you by her office," she offered.
"Oh, of course she'd have an office and I'd love the walk with you.
Guess I'm too used to the smaller size of the Harper Hall. Have you
been here long?" she asked as she mentally urged Note to go visit her
friends. The green gave a surprised trill before launching into the
air and disappearing. "Whew ... love the little brat but she can be a
handful at times."
"About a month," Ranni replied, eyeing the firelizard. "That's going
to be a lot to care for, isn't it? If you Impress?"
Ernola frowned at the question. "Perhaps. My brother has agreed to
help keep her in line since Note adores Garreth. I know that other
candidates have had flits so I'll have to get their advice," she
answered with a slight shrug. "Did you grow up here at the Weyr? If
so, have you seen Hatching's where flits were a problem?"
"No, I'm from Sunstone, born and raised. I've never seen a Hatching,"
she admitted. "I only asked because you said your firelizard was a
handful and that's the same thing the Weyrlingmasters keep telling us
in class about having a new dragon."
"Ahh, then I'll be very experienced for a dragon. I'm not worried
about being able to take of her, just the reaction she'll have to
Note. But, can't worry about that until I Impress ... if I Impress,"
she said feeling a bit nervous since this would probably be the only
Hatching she'll be attending. "Sunstone is a beautiful place. Do you
miss it?"
"No." Ranni said flatly, not inviting room for further questions.
Sunstone was only beautiful on the outside, on the inside it was
festering with lies and deceit, she thought. "Here we are," she said
as they arrived at the Headwoman's office. The door was ajar and
Chaysea was seated inside behind her desk.
There was more to the story than that final answer given but Ernola
wasn't about to push. She didn't want to bring up bad memories. "Thank
you so much, Ranni. I hope we can chat again soon," she said with a
grateful smile before she knocked on the office door.
"Come in," Chaysea told the girl, gesturing to her chair while she
finished what she had been writing. "I was told by the Searchrider
that we would be getting another Candidate. I take it that's you?"
"Actually, I've come directly from Cyradis. I was Searched a few Turns
ago but focused on my craft until this point," she answered as she sat
down. "I hope this isn't a bad time?"
Chaysea found that odd. Most youngsters couldn't wait to Stand once
they were Searched. "Not at all. Dorana has taken over seeing to the
Barracks," she said, speaking of one of her assistants. "She will see
that you have a cot and a trunk. I will add your name to the list for
chores." The Headwoman opened her desk drawer and pulled out Candidate
knots from the tangled wad of cords. "Here you are," she handed them
across the desk.
Accepting the knots with a smile, Ernola couldn't help but be amazed
at how quickly everything was happening. "Thank you. And where can I
find Dorana?" she asked with an inward sigh. As a crafter, she wasn't
thrilled at the thought of chores but she'd do them as directed.
"I'll send Company to her and she'll meet you at the Barracks."
Chaysea said, writing a note and passing it into the little talons of
her brown firelizard. The rubbed his walnut-shaped head against her
cheek with a croon before taking off from his perch and popping
/between/.
Ernola smiled as Company appeared. She was amused by the name. "He's
quite the looker. I think my little green, Note, would like him very
much," she said as he disappeared. "Is there anything else I should
know or do, ma'am?"
"Classes start in the morning. Good luck." Chaysea said, thinking that
the current class of Candidates was shaping up to be quite a large
one.
"Thank you," Ernola said with a wide smile as she headed out to meet Dorana.
