L'keri

~*~
It began, as you might expect, with a screaming challenge in the
Weyrbowl. She smiled at the rider who's arm she was in the process of
bandaging. "I have to go, sorry."

Rhalith responded with a roar of his own, leaping from his ledge where
he'd been coiled up watching the weyrfolk come and go. His worries about
his rider's low mood were forgotten in an instant as he glided down to
land near the brightly glowing green. He could feel L'keri's excitement,
too, as the brownrider left his wingmates behind in the dining cavern
and hurried out to join the other chasers. To catch the lovely Sawauth
and her rider would undoubtedly lift his spirits. He crouched, muscles
tensed, waiting for her to make the slightest move.

}:Sawauth rises and I will catch her!:{ Menanth announced. Heat filled
D'ren's body as his dragon's desire flooded him. He set down his pen
and hurried out to the Weyrbowl.

Nirreth roared his own reply, informing his rider }: I wil chase and
catch Sawauth!:{.
G'nir was in his office. With a sigh, he put away the records he was
working on, informed his staff he was involved in Greenflight and
headed out to the feeding grounds.

Galerith declared his intention to participate too, which just suited
fine with Sh'lua. Nothing like a Flight to make your day better,
except winning would make it even better.

When Kadeth bugled his intentions S'vin followed down to the Flight
rooms, his stomach in his throat. It was Tavia, for Faranth's sake!!
She was like...like...like Tavia! In his mind that was almost
motherly, with her gentle healing ways both in the wings and in the
infirmary. His face was brighter and hotter than a glow as he joined
the group of men around her.

J'nne didn't have that problem. As long as Tribeth never_ever_thought
about his two siblings' greens then everything was fine. And besides
Tavia was beautiful. He'd be proud if Tribeth could catch her green,
though the young bronze was one of the smallest bronzes there,
waiting for Sawauth to throw herself into the sky.

Which she did a moment later with a scream of challenge }:Who of you
can catch me?:{

}:Off! Off! Sawauth rises and I will catch her!:{ Noreth waited
impatiently for his rider to slide off, then he launched himself after
the green dragon, bugling an answer to her challenge.

A'chas sighed, hoping that the straps his brown was still wearing
wouldn't be damaged if his dragon won the flight. He felt Noreth's
emotions sweeping through his mind, a torrent of desire and
determination and let himself be swept away, taking only enough time
to make sure he was walking toward the flight rooms before
surrendering himself completely to his dragon's mind. It was a relief,
really.

}:I will catch you, lovely Sawauth!:{ Menanth took to the air with
several other males. Swift blues quickly blocked his view and he
grumbled, trying to find a better position.

The green's rider was familiar, and just before he lost himself to his
dragon D'ren remembered: Tavia. They'd known each other a little back
at Dolphin Cove. D'ren had seen her around but hadn't spoken to her
yet. Wouldn't this be an interesting way to reconnect?

Juth was just arriving from a sweep duty. He barely had time to
dispatch his rider, then the brown launched after her directly from
the weyr plateau. That left his rider to puzzle out how to reach the
feeding pens and flight cots in time, before the Flight was over.
M'shan could only hope it was a longer flight.

Galerith didn't hesitate to launch after her. }; I will catch you, my
lovely Sawauth! :{ the blue declared.

Nirreth was not slow going up after her either. The bronze had the
advantage of strength and larger size.

Poor Tribeth had neither the size of Nirreth, nor the speed of the
blues. He was left spluttering in the back of the pack, twisted
about and buffered by the larger bronzes. There was more to a mating
flight than speed and flattery, something the young bronze would have
to learn.

Kadeth had no such troubles. He was both experienced and one of the
smallest dragons there. He used his lightness and speed to dart to the
front of the pack of potential mates.

Noreth was one of the larger browns giving chase and had used that
strength to make his way to a favorable position in the flight despite
the late start, keeping the nimble green dragon in sight as he did so.
He bellowed another challenge to the green, }:I will catch you,
Sawauth! You are fast, but I am strong!:{

Close behind him, Rhalith began to edge forward, though not yet trying
to match the agility of the blues. He would be the perfect mate for
Sawauth, he thought, a strong and wily brown in the prime of life. He
would win her! He bugled a challenge to the males around him and pushed
forward, his gaze intent on the green.

Sawauth gloried in her fleet escape from her pursuers but had begun to
tire so she snapped a barrel roll and then left into a cloud.

Instead of darting after her, Menanth tried to judge where she would
emerge and moved to intercept her.

Due to his size, Nirreth couldn't follow her barrel roll and overshot.
Turning in wide arc, the bronze tried to estimate where she would come
out of that cloud. It was gamble and Nirreth knew it.

Despite being one of larger blues, Galerith had no troubles following
the trails of the green. He also had vague image of chasing this one
before. So he was prepared when she moved into the the cloud.

Juth didn't hesitate to dive into the cloud after her. The young brown
was still more eager than wise when chasing greens.

Swift as he was, Kadeth was right on her tail. He was tiring but so was she.

Her move put Tribeth back in the running. Suddenly it didn't matter
that the young bronze had been lagging behind the others and dropping
down. She was almost within his grasp.

Noreth diped his wing and swerved in the air to chase after the
green's quick dodge into the clouds, his turn was wide, but a few
flaps of his powerful wings had him closing the distance quickly.

Rhalith growled in frustration, altering his course as fast as he could
but not enough to lose ground to the faster blues as Sawauth danced in
the air ahead of them, tantalizingly close, then vanished into the
cloud. Sensing that the flight was drawing to a close, he beat his wings
fast, his gaze darting from side to side as he sought a glimpse of green
wings in the misty air.

Sawauth took a second to hesitate in the cloud and then fling herself
at the nearest brown. They were her favorites after all.

At last, he saw the flash of green he'd been waiting for, and with an
exultant cry, he reached out with neck and limbs and tail to twine
himself around her. Rhalith's passion filled L'keri and he drew the
greenrider into his arms, his mouth claiming hers, all his thoughts
melting away until there was nothing left but his burning desire for Tavia.

Noreth pulled up abruptly as the other brown dragon swept in and
caught Sawauth. He rumbled his disappointment as he changed direction
to glide toward his weyr ledge. On the ground, A'chas sighed and began
making his way toward their weyr as well. He still needed to get
Noreth's straps off and put away.
