Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 11, day 4 of Turn 3
Corowal was still middle of the process of learning to know Emerald Falls hold and its key personel. That included meeting with all the ranking crafters and inspecting all the various functions of the hold. After a tour in the beast hold and meeting the master beastcrafter, Aivorn, he went to see the infirmary. He took a false turn somewhere and had to ask a drudge to show him the way.
Corowal thanked and dismissed the drudge. She was pretty amused that the new steward couldn't find his way around the hold yet. Corowal gave her a friedly wink. "Let's keep this as a our little secret, yes?"
"Yes, sir," she giggled and left after bobbing a curtsy.
Corowal looked around the infirmary.
"Can I help you?" asked Miranek.
"Ah, yes, I'm Corowal, the new steward. I'm trying to get to know all high ranking crafter's and you seem to be one," the steward answered with a disarming smile. He had noticed his master's knots. "You're in charge of infirmary, I presume?"
"That's correct," the Master Healer smiled. "Miranek," he said by way of introduction, offering his hand to the other man.
Corowal took it and gave a firm shake. "So, what's your specialty?"
"Midwifery and Paediatrics. Babies and Children basically."
"Really? That's just perfect. I have four children you know and my wife is expecting our fifth. She's going to need your services."
"I'll be glad to meet them when they get here."
"I'll send her over to you. Poor Ofelia has got problems keeping the babies inside long enough. Our second child was born five sevendays too early and as a result, he has health problems. She's usully ordered to bed rest for the last months."
"I see," said Miranek making a mental note of that fact. "When are they expected here?"
"After two sevendays or so, depending on winds."
"The sea air might do all of them some good."
"Not if the fall off from the ship," Corowal said jokingly.
"And I hope that doesn't happen."
Corowal shuddered. "I hope not too! That would be horrible."
"I'm sure the Headwoman here will have no trouble in making them comfortable."
"I'm sure she will." Corowal smiled. "So, how are things here at the infirmary? Anything I should be aware of?" Corowal returned the talk to the work-matters.
"It's usually fairly quiet here. Mainly I get called to birthings, or small injuries. I've got a very talented Journeyman as my number two, I suspect it won't be long before he's recalled back to the Healer Hall for specialised training."
"From what I've learned about Emerald Falls, you probably have quite a lot of births?"
"We do seem to," replied the Healer dryly.
Corowal flashed him a wry grin.
"It goes in fits and starts, for some reason there seem to be a few more babes born in the summer."
"Really?" Corowal asked, he had never noticed the phenomenom, but then, he was steward, not a midwife.
"Perhaps it's that people have to find ways to fill those long winter nights," suggested the healer with a grin.
"Perhaps," Corowal grinned too, "but Coral Bay never has real winters, too tropical."
"Well then you'll find a bit of a change here."
"Change is good, it keeps you from getting mouldy."
"And then you'd need to see me professionally!"
"Well, I try to avoid that, my wife and children should keep you busy enough," Corowal laughed.
"That's the kind of busy I like."
"You haven't met Ofewal yet," Corowal muttered, his voice mixture of amusement, paternal worry and annoyance. Ofewal's weakness irritated (and scared a bit) him, but he was his son.
"Ofewal?"
"My second son, I don't think he's seen a healthy day in his life."
"Well we'll see about that when he gets here."
"Yes, we will, and I better let you get back to your duties," Corowal said.
"It was nice to meet you."
"Likewise, Master Miranek."
