Riyanth was laden down with a few bags of Kapera's most precious items
first. She grumbled, slightly, as she moved backwards after her rider
dismounted. She thought that bronzes ought to do her carrying for her.
"Headwoman Jayzine, a pleasure." Kapera had met her when coming as a
representative to River Bluff, but she didn't know the woman well.
Since goldriders worked so closely with the Headwomen, she would have
to change that. "How have you been liking settling in?"
Jayzine looked around and smiled again. "Its beautiful, and new and
the crafters are going all out to make this place magnificent," she
said. "Would you like to see your weyr?"
"Of course," Kapera said. "How is it being handled? We're all assigned
to the junior golds' quarters until the first rising determines who
the Weyrwoman is?"
Junior golds' quarters. It sounded derisive to say, coming from she
who had been a Weyrwoman and a Second both before. And yet, with all
the weyrs being carved new, how were junior gold quarters any
different from the other newly-hewn out ones?
"We're still building out the smaller weyrs and working in a balanced
quantity except for the gold and bronze weyrs. Those were finished
first so we were sure we'd be able to house you." Jayzine cleared her
throat, "as far as I know for the present, I'll be running the day to day
operations of the Weyr until the Senior Weyrwoman is chosen. Yes,
you'll all be housed in the Junior Gold quarters until that time.
Once the first gold rises, her rider will be Senior and choose her
second from the remaining candidates. Does that sound about what you
expected?"
"That's one way to solve, "who's doing the Weyrwoman's job"," Kapera
said with a laugh. "I've been in less functional arrangements."
"I imagine so," Jayzine nodded. "Lord Weyrholder K'ran is in the
Weyrholder's Quarters until the first flight makes the choice. Would
you like to see the one I've selected for you?"
A few Turns ago, she'd have bristled at that statement and asked why
she couldn't select her own weyr of the choices. When she was very
self-important and arrogant. Now, she knew that there would be
rearrangements, one way or another, when the first gold rose. She
could live anywhere for now.
"Absolutely," she told Jayzine. "Will these be more or less
comfortable than the ones used for brooding queens in other Weyrs? I
don't know about the River Bluff ones, but the Windswept Islands ones
weren't comfortable at all."
"This way then," Jayzine waved toward the entrance. "We've been very
busy and the ladies have put some special effort into decorating for
you. We knew you'd be bringing your own things but thought they'd try
to make you feel welcome. She led the goldrider through a real
polished wooden door into a lovely sitting room. "I knew you had no
children yet so this weyr has a larger living area while the one for
Teseada needed the extra sleeping chamber for her child. So her main
room is slightly smaller but with the extra chamber for her child."
Kapera's eyes widened and she mentally stepped her evaluation of
Jayzine up, as she heard the woman explain what choices she'd made in
assigning which goldrider where. She was looking forward to getting to
know this Headwoman, she thought.
"You put quite a lot of thought into who you assigned where, I see,"
she said, an approving tone. "When I heard they'd finished the
temporary weyrs, I was expecting a lot more rough-hewn stone and maybe
some old weavings on the ground to even it out for now."
"Well," Jayzine chuckled, "we don't exactly _have_ anything old at
this point. Maybe if you tramp around on it a bit we can give it to
someone else as an old piece later." She smiled and held out her
hand. "It's good to have you here goldrider." She took a big breath
to manage her joy at the progress involved with the weyrwomen
arriving. "We've had bronzes competing with each other as to how much
sand they could push into the hatching grounds all week."
Jayzine's offer to take hands surprised her but she reached out to
clasp them. The headwoman seemed so nice. She found herself hoping
they could make friends.
"And here I thought everything was going to be old cast-offs from
other Weyrs or Holds," she admitted.
The anecdote about the bronzes competing to push sand made her laugh. "I'm sure they're doing amazing at the job, even if
bronzes aren't used to manual labor. Tell me, do those riders also get
real weyrs yet, or are they part of the staff living in the temporary
quarters? When we flew in, I saw some blues and greens in what looked
like cots and sand wallows."
"Lord K'ran is currently residing in the Weyrleader's quarters and
Wingleader D'hol in one of the Wingleaders. N'call who came with
Teseada is actually living with her and their child in her Weyr for
the moment, though I hear he also has a weyrmate back at Dragonsfall."
She shook her head not understanding the situation completely. "We
passed those weyrs on our way to yours. We're expecting Ashela from
Dreamsend in the next few days."
"They're working quickly and getting functional weyrs up for riders as
they transfer in. I'd be happy to share my notes with all of you later
if you wish. My office is on the second floor of the Dining Hall over
the kitchens."
"I'd like to see those notes. And I'd like to work with you, too, as
part of this. And a tour, I'll need it as well," Kapera said, looking
around her weyr. Shards, but it was stunning.
"Oh, I want to explore this, and I want to explore everything," she
said to Jayzine, her eyes sparkling. She looked a little younger and
more eager, right now.
"That is excellent," Jayzine nodded. "I should send Bilpen to give you
the tour and explanation of everything he has planned. When would you
like to see him?"
Kapera considered it. She could unpack and unwind later. For now she
wanted to be seen as eager, enthusiastic, interested... all of the
things that would make her seem like the best candidate for the
position, make the staff here like her, for the job.
"Today, for sure. Do you know when he's free? Really, all I have to
do is put a few bags down and I'd be ready to go."
"Well," Jayzine smiled. "The lunch bell is going to ring shortly and
when it does, Master Bilpen will be in the dining hall. We call all
the crew with a double bell to come from all over the site for a meal.
We can seat over four hundred and eighty in the main dining room
alone. Please just go to the head table and I'll send him to you.
"Thank you for the instruction," Kapera said, smiling at Jayzine. "Maybe I'll see you around today. If not, tomorrow in your office."
