Description: A meeting of the Barrier Lake leadership team.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 12, day 26 of Turn 9
Notes: Notes: severely backdated due to Avery LOA
The gold dragons had arrived and settled in. That was a major step for
the weyrhold, a sign that they were blossoming and well on their way.
It also meant K'ran had some work to do. Before the first of them rose
he'd been running things as an informal council of people with ranking
positions who were working on various project management areas. Now,
with the sands ready, he suspected the queen riders might each want to
make their own stamp on the project, and expect to be handed a
leadership position as though they were already Weyrwomen. K'ran liked
the structure he had going and he didn't intend them to disrupt it.
So he called together the team he'd mentally dubbed as his Leadership
Council to have a meeting to go over their plans any concerns as they
moved forward.
Voices sounded outside the door and the Project manager and headwoman
walked in together.
Jayzine walked directly to the sideboard to make sure the pitcher of
Klah was hot. "Looks good," she turned to the others and moved to take
her seat. "Lord Weyrholder," She nodded to K'ran.
"K'ran," Bilpen grinned as he came into the room. "How are you doing
today?"
K'lvin wasn't sure how he had earned a spot on K'ran's small council,
but he was honored to sit by K'ran in the meeting and give opinions as
needed. The retired bronzerider did have thirty-five Turns of
dragonriding experience, and several of those Turns had been as a
Wingleader. "Headwoman, Bilpen," he nodded to the other two as he
took a seat and then finally, "K'ran." It still felt weird calling his
close friend 'Lord Weyrholder,' but 'Weyrleader' was not entirely
correct either.
D'hol strode in moments later, a sheaf of hides tucked under his arm.
"Good morning everyone." Moving to the sideboard, he poured himself a
cup of klah and took his own seat, setting the hides down in front of
him.
"Good morning," N'call called to the others as he led Teseada into the
room and seated her at the table.
"Thank you," she said softly turning to N'call with a smile just for
him. "Good morning."
Perfectly groomed and with a dazzling smile for the other riders, Ashela
strolled into the room with as much confidence as if she'd been
Weyrwoman already. Spying an empty seat opposite K'ran, she sank
gracefully into it, smoothed down her skirts and looked around. Here in
this room were the most senior bronzeriders, the likeliest candidates
for Weyrleader, and she already had some idea of who she'd favor. "Good
morning, Lord Weyrholder."
D'hol took his seat beside K'ran, settling himself in for a long
meeting. He'd met Ashela, of course, intimately, but Teseada he
wasn't as familiar with. Kapera of course, he knew well. He took a
sip of his klah, gauging the other's reactions and expressions,
measuring how they might be feeling or thinking.
"Here you go," Jayzine said as she brought a tray of Klah and set it
on the table for everyone to pour of they wished. She took a cup for
herself and settled near Ashela who had been very helpful in the Weyr
as they were getting new people settled.
Bilpen bustled over to grab a pastry as well and lifted it in salute
to the Headwoman as he returned to his seat.
Kapera took a cup of klah and settled back into her seat, studying the
arrangements. K'ran and K'lvin and D'hol sat near each other as made
sense, Ashela had chosen a space where she could keep an eye on K'ran.
She was pleased her seat was by Jayzine, one woman she thought she could
work with. She gave Teseada a smile when she came in with N'call,
genuinely pleased to see her again.
K'ran waited until everyone was assembled and everyone had gotten klah,
then said, "Welcome to the meeting. I'm pleased to see you all here
today. All of you are very important parts of the new Weyr we're
building here, and while some of us have been here awhile and have
settled into our roles, others have just arrived. So this is a good time
to talk about the atypical organization we've been using. I've prepared
a hide laying it out for everyone, please take a moment to review."
He passed the stack down the table so people could take it and waited to
see their reactions. What the goldriders thought about being assigned
under Jayzine would be interesting.
K'lvin skimmed down over the hide detailing the different roles that
they would all serve and who they would report to; frankly, he was just
glad that he was a part of the project, that K'ran saw his experience as
valuable enough to be of service.
Kapera studied it, thinking it seemed reasonable. Weyrwoman and
Headwoman traditionally worked closely, so assigning the goldriders to
work under her and be assigned projects made sense. There were a few
things she _didn't_ want to do, so she mentally resolved to speak to
Jayzine as soon as she could about that. Maybe, if she was lucky, she
could get someone else assigned to the Infirmary-related duties...
One part caught her eye, the line about how the queens would trade off
leading the queen's wing. She supposed it was reasonable that K'ran
didn't want to designate just one of them as the leader, but trading
off? That seemed novel.
"Lord Weyrholder, can you be more specific on how you see the trading
off of the queen's wing working? I want to be sure I understand your
thought process, here," she asked in a polite tone.
"The queen's wing is used to who is leading it changing with the
clutching cycle. In addition, wing assignments aren't finalized until
the leadership is confirmed. I'm sure there will be shakeups, then," he
said. "My plan is for a goldrider to lead two sevendays as the
Wingleader, the next one in line serves as the Wingsecond. When the two
sevendays are over, she steps up to be Wingleader, the third one becomes
Wingsecond, the one who was the leader flies as a regular wingrider."
Kapera nodded her understanding, so he looked at Ashela and Teseada to
see how they felt and if they had questions.
"That seems fair. We'll all need to get used to flying over this new
territory," Ashela said. Though she'd half-hoped to be named to lead the
queen's wing, she knew it wasn't likely when Kapera had been Weyrwoman
before. At least that way, she'd get a chance. She and Aglayath had only
led a wing a few times outside of drills, and she was keen to show what
they could do.
"Yes, that's another point. Sweeprides will be critical to teach all
of our riders about the territory. Former River Bluff ones will know
most of it, so pairing them with people who haven't overflown here
before is my suggestion. I'll go over this more with the drgonriders,
later," he added, not intending to leave out the rest of the team.
"I'd like Bilpen to go over the current state of construction and then
Jayzine to talk about supplies..." K'ran slid across more things for
the team to look at, and the meeting kept going.
