Hopeful Letters

Writers: Avery, Heather
Date Posted: 25th February 2020

Characters: K'lvin, Riveenata
Description: The pair exchange letters about the arrival of Riveenata's niece.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr, Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 5 of Turn 10

Riveenata had promied K'lvin that after her sister's baby was born, she'd leave Dolphin Cove to be with him at Barrier Lake. She was sure that the Weyrhold would accept her with her dual training as rider and crafter, and if K'lvin still wanted her to come. Assuming the Weyrleaders here wouldn't consider it a problem. There had been some reshuffling around now that the new Weyrhold was becoming a Weyr in more truth.

Veneena's baby was born in mid afternoon, and the familial celebration lasted well into the evening.

It was when she was back at her own weyr that Riveenata realized she should tell K'lvin that the newest familial addition was born. She was going to have Savith reach Xmrenth, but then realized she didn't know the duties he was doing when it was daytime there, so she wrote a quick note on a piece of hide:

"K'lvin,

Good news! My sister's daughter was born today, her name is Venali. A few days late but healthy and happy and huge. You should come by on the next restday and visit, the family won't mind more people coming to admire her and I miss you. Assuming your duties aren't too pressing.

Riveenata"

The next morning, she borrowed her brother's firelizard and had the brown go off to deliver the note to K'lvin, since Savith was able to give good images of Xmrenth to the flit. **They're handy, I should have my own,** she mused. **Savith, what do you think?**

}:A little one might take you away from me.:{

**I would still be with you, and so would they, as a playmate.**

The green huffed and arched her head on the ledge. }:Perhaps.:{

Over at Barrier Lake, a small brown firelizard with hide tied to the leg popped out of /between/ and circled Xmrenth's head, cheeping.

The bronze peered up at the little flit before tucking his head back down with a huff. }:You have a message,:{ he told K'lvin before speaking to the firelizard. }:He's in there,:{ Xmrenth sent a mental image of his rider's office.

K'lvin was still relishing the feel of his new office as Weyrlingmaster. He had never been the first to have anything, all other offices he had ever held were Turns old, and the furniture in them chipped and worn from the use of many other dragonriders before him. This time, however, the fixtures in the office gleamed, and the wood of his desk smelled fresh, and the glossy coating had been buffed and polished to a shine.

He looked up when Xmrenth spoke, intrigued at the brown firelizard that delivered a message to his desk. "Thank you, little one," he said, offering one of the small meatrolls he'd been eating as a sacrifice to the flit.

Picking up the letter, he opened it and the corners of his eyes immediately crinkled when he glanced at the signature to see Riveenata's sprawled name. The birth of the child caught his attention immediately since that had been Riveenata's main reason for remaining behind at Dolphin Cove while he moved on to Barrier Lake. He hoped this meant they would be living under the same roof again soon.

"Riv,
Wonderful news about your sister and little Venali. Send my regards to Veneena. I will sneak away next restday to come by for a visit barring any emergencies.

Yours, K"

"Here you go, can you take this back?" he asked, folding the note and extending it to the firelizard.

The brown cheeped and disappeared, having gobbled all the treat and now holding still to deliver.

Riveenata unrolled it and beamed at his writing. She couldn't wait to see him on the next restday.
