A Personal Invitation

Writers: Avery, Heather
Date Posted: 25th February 2020

Characters: K'lvin, Riveenata
Description: K'lvin tells Riveenata about D'hol's invitation and invites her to Barrier Lake.... although he might not receive the answer he had hoped for.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 27 of Turn 10
Notes: Mentioned: D'hol

The fresh scent of the sea air was the first thing that K'lvin noticed
as he and Xmrenth came out of /between/ above Dolphin Cove. It was one
of his favorite parts about the Weyr. His eyes immediately began seeking
out Riveenata's ledge, even though they were so high up that the
silhouettes of the weyrs were just black dots.

Xmrenth called his welcome to the watchdragon as they descended, his
bronze wings angling them toward Savith's ledge. K'lvin felt his pulse
quicken as they neared. It had been a month since he had seen the
greenrider but he had thought about her constantly.

}:Xmrenth is here!:{ Savith informed her rider as soon as she spotted
the familiar bronze dragon.

**Tell him where I am,** the greenrider said, flashing her dragon images
of how she was in the Infirmary.

}:My rider is with her clutchmate in the Infirmary but can meet you
shortly,:{ Savith said. }:Do you wish to give her a lift to her ledge?:{

'Shortly' was a relative turn, it was nearly a quarter of a candlemark
later before Riveenata came jogging out of the Lower Caverns entrace.

K'lvin and Xmrenth were still in the weyrbowl waiting. The bronzerider
was sitting on the ground, leaning against his lifemate with one elbow
resting on his bent knee. He had his head reclined back and his eyes
were closed, the relaxed muscles in his face said that he was catching a
little nap.

"K'lvin! I didn't keep you too long, did I?"

One eye opened and then a slow smile spread across his face. "There you
are." Pushing to his feet, K'lvin opened his arms and wrapped them
around Riveenata. "Of course not." He paused for a moment. "Shards, you
smell amazing." It was that scent that he often found himself imagining
he smelled when he woke up alone at Barrier Lake.

"Redwort smells amazing?" she joked, pressing her face into his chest
for a moment to breahe him in as well - masculine scent mixed with
wherhide leather and the spicy smell of dragon and the oil riders used,
a familiar blend.

"Sorry I was late, I was supporting my sister through her latest
pregnancy checkup."

"How is she doing?" he asked, not ready to let go of Riveenata just yet.
K'lvin wanted to savor the way she felt in his arms since he only had a
few candlemarks to spend at Dolphin Cove.

"Very good. they're saying she'll give birth at the end of month 2, now.

I'm excited, it's the first baby of my siblings," she said, beaming.

"You will be an amazing aunt," he replied. K'lvin reluctantly pulled
back and looked down at her. "Not to sound ominous, but is there
somewhere we can talk? Your weyr? Over a meal in the Dining Cavern?"

"I'd be happy to go up to my weyr. Does Xmrenth want to give us a lift?"

The bronze swung his head toward her in response. "Let's go," he said,
gesturing for her to mount first before he climbed up behind her.
Xmrenth stretched his wings out from where they had been folded against
his back and leaped into the air. The flight to Savith's weyrledge was a
short one and in a matter of seconds they were dismounting at
Riveenata's weyr.

"It's strange to ride a large dragon, but it's nice," she said, beaming
at him as they dismounted. She was happy to see him again, even if it
sounded ominous in some ways. Though maybe he just wanted private time?
But then he'd mentioned the Dining Cavern...

"The rider of said dragon is even better," he growled in her ear,
wrapping his arms around her from behind as they walked in.

"Oh, I know you're huge and fun to ride," she said, turning her head
slightly to give him access to her cheek and neck if he wanted.

He wanted. K'lvin attacked her neck with kisses. "Good, I was afraid
you'd forgotten."

"I can't forget, I still think about you," she assured him. She shivered
as he kissed her neck, turned more in his arms so she was facing him.

Even though he had wanted to talk to her about the position D'hol had
offered him first, now that she was there in his arms K'lvin's was
thinking that conversation could wait until later. "I even swear I smell
you in my weyr sometimes," K'lvin said cupping her face in his hands and
kissing her softly. "Does that sound pathetic?"

"No," she murmured, reaching a hand up to cover his. "You can take some
of my clothes home if you want so it does."

He liked that idea, even if it made him sound like a lovesick teen.
"I'll take this with me," K'lvin said with a gleam in his eyes as he
tugged on the hem of her shirt.

"As you wish." She stretched so he could start peeling it off. "Shards,
I've missed you. Talking to you, as well as touching you." Though _that_
was what Riveenata wanted most, right now.

"And I you. It will be nice when we're in the same place again." K'lvin admitted as he lifted the hem of the shirt, pulling the article of clothing over her head and casting it into a nearby chair. "For safe keeping," he said with a wink, his hands skimming down her bare sides to the top of her pants. "Can't have a shirt without the pants."

She grinned and said, "A shirt for a shirt," tugging at the laces of his. He'd said he wanted to talk but then here they were, falling back into a rhythm of being physically intimate. After the awkwardness that had fallen between them during the fighting, and then him leaving, it felt like the physical was mostly what they had time for, now.

K'lvin pulled the shirt over his head, ruffling his hair, and tossed it aside. The strict diet he now followed after the last episode with his heart, coupled with the exercise he'd been getting at the Weyrhold, had resulted in trimming his figure from the thick padded muscle he'd had when he was an active rider to a more defined leaner torso. His hands went back to her pants, hooking his fingers in her belt loops to pull her closer.

She shuddered against him and let him pull her closer, surrendering to the passion between them.

------

After time had passed and she laid on her back, body heaving with little aftershocks and taking deep breaths, she looked over at him. "Was this why you came by?"

"No, but it was a nice addition," K'lvin said with a grin, twirling the ends of her hair between his fingers as he tried to regain his breath.

She nuzzled her head into his chest. "So what's going on?"

"D'hol has offered me the Weyrlingmaster position at Barrier Lake," he told her.

Her eyes widened. "A real job...you wouldn't be retired anymore. That's exciting."

"I've already been cleared by a healer for the duty. I haven't had any issues with my heart in the last couple of months. The healer made it clear, though, that my threadfall flying is limited to just supervising the Weyrlings when they're ready to go out." K'lvin shrugged a little, just happy to be offered a position that mattered. "I told D'hol I couldn't give him an answer until I talked to you."

"Because it would mean you committing to being there for the long term."

At first he'd gone to help K'ran set it up, and there'd been the thought that after the rise happened maybe he'd come back to his role here. He wouldn't be coming back to Dolphin Cove, which meant if they were going to be together, she'd have to move. She knew her family wouldn't. And she'd never lived apart from them...

"That's right," K'lvin said. "If you want to stay at Dolphin Cove then I'll turn the position down and I'll move my things back here. The position doesn't matter if we have to live apart."

"I think you deserve the position and have it," she said immediately, processing the first part of his words before the second part. Then her brain caught up, and she said... "If we have to live apart. You mean you want to live at the same Weyr?"

}:Perhaps he wants more,:{ Savith thought at her.

"Yes. I've hated living in different Weyrs the last few months. Being Weyrlingmaster isn't worth it if you are not at Barrier Lake. With that kind of position the time I would have to come and visit at Dolphin Cove would be even more limited than it is now. So if you don't want to leave Dolphin Cove, tell me, and I'll turn it down." He knew it was a lot, asking her to move, especially since they were still repairing the damage to their relationship that his stubbornness had caused, but K'lvin wasn't going to hide his feelings the way he had before.

**Sounded almost like a weyrmating invite...but it's too soon,** she thought, disappointed. She quashed that in order to speak.

"I'm not saying no. I've missed you, too. But I can't move immediately. I want to be here for my sister's pregnancy, and doing hard work there for setup and /betweening/ back here feels like it would be too demanding and I still wouldn't get enough time with her," she said, hesitantly.

That sounded dangerously close to a 'no' K'lvin thought. Perhaps she didn't want to come live with him at Barrier Lake, maybe it was too soon. "D'hol said I had until Riyanth clutches to let him know."

Riveenata looked legitimately surprised by that. "That's a long time."

"It's just a little less than a month away now, not a lot of time when you think about all of the Searching that needs to be done to acquire Candidates, and then there's the training of the Candidates. The new Weyrlingmaster will need to find himself some staff and a 'second as well." K'lvin reasoned.

"That means you should accept early. You're already thinking about it."

"I won't accept until I know that you're coming to Barrier Lake, Riveenata. I hope that doesn't make you feel... pressured, but I won't live apart from you permanently. Unless... well, unless you, um, want some space."

"I want to talk to my family first," she said, resolutely. It was a big decision. She needed to know her sister would be all right. "But I'm interested, I promise." Her tone was soft and she reached up to skim fingers along his cheek.

K'lvin turned his face to kiss her fingertips. "Okay, and you know, my weyr's always open at Barrier Lake if you want to come visit."

"I will," she said.
