Description: Thayde returns from Jade Harbor and finds there's been an accident
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 6, day 10 of Turn 10
The moment the dragon appeared over the Hall, word was sent. By the
time a rider and passenger landed, a Healer was waiting on the side,
face solemn as the pair dismounted. "Master Thayde, you need to come
with me please. Right away. "
"Enamra?" he asked the healer immediately, because why else would a
healer be waiting for him with such a solemn face.
The Healer, Pofric, nodded, gave a scant nod to the rider and began
leading Thayde to the infirmary, speaking quickly. "I'm afraid there
was an accident. She was out with her siblings on the beach. The
eldest said that the little boy got away from her and started climbing
on some of those boulders near the the main launch. She went to fetch
him and she fell. It was a bad tumble, she hit her head, and she went
into the water."
Thayde turned and grabbed Pofric by the shoulders, his dark eyes wild
with panic. "Is she..." he couldn't even finish the question.
Pofric gently gripped Thayde's hands. "She's alive. Her sister went
in right after her. Apparently, she's a very good swimmer. There was
also a pod nearby who heard. Ada was with them. They helped push her
back to shore. She's pretty bruised and she did have a bit of water
that she coughed up. There's a good gash on her head, but...uhm..."
He sighed. "It was a bad fall, Thayde. I'm sorry but she started
contractions and we couldn't stop them."
The grief of losing the baby was swallowed up in the overwhelming
relief that flooded through him as he heard that she was alive. They
could possibly make another baby, but there could not be another
Enamra.
Thayde relaxed his grip on Pofric's shoulders. "Okay. Take me to her."
They started walking again. "She's still in the process, Thayde.
She's groggy and confused and we've given her some fellis for the
pain. Her siblings were taken by their foster parents, but the eldest
isn't..."
They entered the infirmary and Enamra's sister, Embly, immediately
rushed to Thayde, tears streaming down her cheeks. The nine-turn old
girl began choking out words. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Thayde! I told
her I would get him, but she wouldn't let me. And I tried to get her
out as soon as I could but I couldn't do it by myself! It's my fault!"
Thayde wrapped his arms around the girl's shaking shoulders, letting
her cry against his shirt. "It's okay, Embly, you did exactly what you
should have. She's alive because of you." Releasing her, he knelt to
be able to look her in her eyes. "You did good, Embly. Now, I'll stay
with Enamra, you go and check on your siblings and tell them it's
okay."
"Is she gonna be okay?" Embly sucked in her lower lip as Pofric gently
took her hand.
"She'll be fine. Go with Descona and we'll let you know when you can
see her, alright?" A young Healer apprentice approached, smiled
gently at Embly, and lead her away, wrapping her arm around the young
girl's shaking shoulders. Pofric watched for a moment before
exhaling. "She's back here, Thayde." He led Thayde towards a small
curtained alcove, where a soft, pained groan was heard.
Enamra lay in the bed, her hair still damp from seawater, and her
brow covered in a thick bandage. A journeywoman held her hand,
murmuring softly to her as her body clenched in apparent pain. She
whimpered, stiffened, then relaxed with another soft groan.
Thayde went to her beside, gently stroking his hand over her hair as
he bent and kissed her temple. "I'm here, love," he murmured, reaching
down to take her hand.
Enamra's eyes fluttered open, clearly confused and hazy as her brows
knit. "Thayde? I fell. The baby. It hurts..." she gripped his hand.
She grimaced again and stiffened while Pofric checked her. He
gestured to the journeywoman who moved aside, bringing cloths and a
basin of heated water. Here looked up and spoke softly. "It's nearly
over."
"You're almost done, and then you can rest," Thayde said, speaking so
closely to her that his lips brushed her ear.
That brought a whimper and a stronger grip on his hand. "I'm sorry I
fell. Didn't mean to. Slippery. " She grimaced, clenching her teeth,
and gave a groan of pain as her body tensed. Her body then relaxed as
there was movement at the foot of her bed by the attending healers. A
soft creel of mourning was heard from the rafters as Bolo looked down,
the young firelizard rocking side to side.
Pofric looked up at Thayde and gave a slow, somber nod. There would be
more, less painful contractions, but the worst of them were over.
"I'll have heated pads brought in for her. She'll have to stay at
least over night, then if there's no complications, you can take her
home, but I'd recommend you stay with her for a few days and keep an
eye on her head injury. Hot baths will help with any soreness from
the bruising."
Thayde nodded, barely hearing Pofric. It was all information that he
knew, information that he'd given patients himself. "Thank you,
Pofric." He also nodded his thanks to an apprentice who brought a
chair for him so he could stay by Enamra's bedside. "The most
important thing is that you are okay," he told Enamra, raising her
hand and kissing the back of it.
When the Healers left to give them privacy, Bolo flew down to nestle
against Enamra's side, burying his small head against her neck.
Enamra barely noticed the added warmth. Her eyes opened again,
looking at Thayde with exhaustion, then she closed her eyes and a
single tear slipped out. "I'm sorry. "
"It's okay, sweetheart, it's okay." Thayde reassured her, reaching up
to wipe the tear with his thumb. "Accidents happen. The important
thing is that you're okay."
She frowned, obviously trying to think, but having difficulty getting
clear thoughts. She sighed, pressing her cheek against his hand.
"I'm so tired. Can I sleep?"
"Well," he hesitated. She had been given fellis, which was something
he wouldn't have personally done with her having a head injury. He
wanted her to stay awake but he doubted she would be able to fight the
drowsy effects of the fellis. "Go ahead and sleep, I'll wake you in a
bit to check on you."
She nodded slowly, and kept a firm grip on his hand even as she
relaxed. The cramps still came, waking her, but gradually they eased
enough that she was able to fall into a light slumber. Even as she
slept, her hand remained curled in Thayde's.
