Aviday

Aviday

Aviday lay on her bed, thankful for the restday. She'd refused to see
her mother when she'd attempted to visit; to have her waiting for her
after her flight, and then scold her for "not doing it right" was more
than Aviday could bear. She hadn't even asked or tried to comfort her;
it was like she simply hadn't understood. Her mother didn't understand
a lot of things, Aviday realized.

}: I'm sorry I did wrong. :{ Kobeth's voice sounded mournful as she
lay morosely, not completely understanding why her rider was so sad,
but knowing somehow that it had been because of her. That she had
caused her rider pain, despite Hers telling her that it hadn't been
her fault. So, she lay on her little ledge, and heaved a soft sigh.

**You didn't. You did everything right like you were supposed to. It's
all my fault.** She'd /betweened/ a lot recently. More than necessary.
She told others that it was just for practice, but she hadn't been
taking her teas when the flight happened. She wanted to make sure that
she didn't do anything else wrong. She felt bad too for R'fal. He'd
been so upset too. It must have been a horrible flight for him too,
the weight of which now pushed heavily down on her shoulders. She felt
utterly miserable; she couldn't tell anyone what had happened. How
could she? She'd get R'fal in trouble too, and she didn't want that.

So, Aviday lay on the bed, unwilling to move, eat, or get up. Instead,
she stared at the wall.

"Hello the weyr?" a familiar voice called.

Since Kobeth's weyrledge was so small, Dagreth had dropped his rider off in the Weyrbowl and then retreated to the heights of the Weyr to perch and wait.

Aviday lifted her head at the familiar voice, then forced herself to sit on the side of her bed. "T'kala?" Her voice was soft. What was he doing here? A visit? Here couldn't know either; she knew him and he'd feel like he should tell someone. So, Aviday forced a smile on her face and tried to sound happy. "Come in!"

T'kala thought the greenrider's eyes were a little suspicious, perhaps not quite as bright and carefree as usual, but he didn't comment on it. "Hey twerp," he said, hooking his arm around her neck playfully, in big brother fashion. "Word through the vine is you had your first flight," he grinned, lifting his eyebrows. "I came to hear you dish." The bluerider was a voracious gossip.

She should have known. Her smile faltered just for an instant before she caught herself and her forced wide and bright smile didn't quite meet her eyes. "Oh yeah. Um, that happened. It was great! He was really nice. Wonderful even. " She quickly nodded. "Loved it. Looking forward to the next time, cause wow!" Her stomach twisted just a little at the thought.

The bluerider tossed himself onto Aviday's couch. "Well? Who was it? Who won? Did you hang around for 'seconds'?" T'kala waggled his eyebrows.

She couldn't lie about that. Everyone would have known who won, so it didn't make any sense to even try. "Oh, it was a rider named R'fal. He was super nice. But, no, I think it was just too much for the both of us. It was his first catch too, so I think we were a little overwhelmed. Maybe next time though!" Her cheeks were beginning to hurt from the forced smiles. "But you know, gotta wait a few more months and it could be someone else." Someone else who might hurt her again because she didn't do what she was supposed to. Or maybe someone else who wanted those seconds T'kala was talking about. The thought made her feel ill.

Trying to change the subject, she kept her bright smile. "So what's been going on with you? Any fun at the new Weyr? Tell me about it!"

T'kala took Aviday's bait. "Barrier Lake is all work and no play. I haven't really found a solid friend group there yet, but I'm still working on it." He didn't regret leaving Dolphin Cove, however, the new purpose, and new work at Barrier Lake was fulfilling.

**Thank Faranth.** She dropped her bright smile and relaxed her aching cheeks. "Aww, I'm sorry. I'm sure you will soon. Sty least you're busy, right? Lots of stuff to do there, I'm sure. Have you met anyone you like at least?"

The bluerider shrugged. "Not really. I keep hoping some more fresh transfers will show up to living things up a bit. Right now everyone is so serious and stuffy."

"Oh, well just give 'em time. You know, with everything being so busy and all. Maybe you can lighten then up a bit. You know, like dancing naked in the baths or something. I know you, you'll get them _all_ laughing in no time at all. You're really good at that. "

"Well, I'm in D'hol and K'ran's Wing, neither of them strike me as the type that would find that very funny." T'kala shuddered at the thought.

"Oh..." Her voice trailed off. "Yeah. I heard D'hol was kinda cranky and stiff. But you got the Weyrleader's wing, so that's a good thing. I mean, it's the best, so at least you've got that," she pointed out, then frowned. The Weyrleader's wing also meant T'kala was in the most dangerous and her smile completely dropped. "Just be careful, okay? I don't want you to get hurt. I really don't want that. I'll worry about you. "

"Of course I will be," T'kala said, giving her a wink. "I'm always careful, and Dagreth is the best blue out there." The blue in question gave a smart little trumpet of agreement.

The wink finally brought a bit of an honest smile. "You better be.. And I know he is. He's an awesome blue. " Blues caught greens. For an instant, she was truly glad that T'kala had left Dolphins Cove. What if he'd caught? The thought of him hurting her like that was horrible. "I miss you guys, but I bet it'll all work out good for everyone. "

Kobeth lifted her head at the bugle and gave a half-hearted croon of agreement before settling back down.
