J'nus went over the weather report for the next day a second time,
hoping that the forecast would miraculously change. The Starsmiths
were predicting Threadfall in a thunderstorm, which could mean
anything from high winds, rain and hail-- and lightning. Storms were
some of the most dangerous conditions a dragonrider could fly through.
He sighed and set it aside as there was a knock on his office door.

N'call opened the door after the knock and walked into the
Wingleader's office with his notes on the wing. "Good afternoon," he
nodded as he sat in one of the chairs across from J'nus. "I brought
the latest from the dragonhealers. There are a couple of greens and
blues who may not be up to the weather tomorrow." He set the report on
the desk in front of him.

"How many?" J'nus asked.

"I'm counting three of them that are right out and another two who
would be questionable depending on the wind strength. Maybe one more
that was due to come back that might be held in Queens for another
seven-day."

Jeyme entered on the tail end of N'call's comment. "If you are talking
about Edra, I just came from the infirmary and the healer said she
would be out for another sevenday." The wingthird took a seat beside
of N'call.

"I'm not surprised. That was a nasty sprain to the wrist." J'nus
tapped the hide with his finger. "All right. Well. Skybroom will be
down at least six. I want R'truri to stay with Kapera for tomorrow at
the very least. I'd prefer him to fly at a lower altitude and stay
safe." He looked up at his Wingsecond and 'Third. They were both young
and relatively inexperienced, but they were smart and willing to
learn. Between the three of them, they'd be able to keep Skybroom safe
and still do their duty to keep the land safe from Thread. "With high
winds and rain tomorrow, I will consider it a successful Threadfall if
we keep our Wing out of the Infirmary. We'll go with formation four.
N'call, instead of flying with your usual nine, I want you flying the
perimeter to watch for Thread clumps and keep an eye on Ash Wing. If
anyone above looks like they're in trouble, make sure that you have a
pair ready to assist. I also want you watching to see if there's any
Thread clumps too big for Willow Wing to deal with passing through,
and making a call about whether to summon one of our nines to deal
with it or to let Kapera know what to expect. Jeyme, I want you manage
the mid-point transition and monitor to see if anyone is struggling.
Do you think Quinneth is up to flying a full 'Fall in high winds?"

Jeyme shook her head. "I can cover half of 'fall and the mid-point
transition, but there's no way Quinneth, at her size, could maintain a
full 'fall."

N'call nodded at the assignment and appeared thoughtful for a moment.
"What about H'riv? He's solid and could take the handoff from Jeyme
when Quinneth tires. He's got some good instincts."

J'nus thought for a moment. "Maybe I'll have H'riv watching out for
stragglers in the first half of the 'fall, then. Jeyme, I'd prefer you
flying the second half. Will that work for you?" While the blues and
greens would have switched out, for the most part, the second half
could tire out some of the browns and even bronzes if the winds were
high enough. It would be good to have her watching.

"Absolutely. I will speak with H'riv about the first part of fall."
The gregarious brownrider would do fine, she was sure, and coming in
the second half of fall fresh would allow her and Quinneth to provide
more relief to the weary wingriders.

"Thank you." J'nus turned back to N'call. "You mentioned two riders
who are questionable for returning to active duty; inform them that
they can come back next 'fall, hopefully when the weather's a little
kinder. I'd rather fly short a few riders than bring someone in who
might not be healed enough to handle it. Put them on firestone duty."

N'call, nodded sharply and made a note. "Anything else?"

J'nus thought for a moment. "Not for now. Please let the Wing know
what to expect for tomorrow so that they can prepare. Like I said, the
goal is to make sure that everyone in the Wing comes back to the Weyr
safely. I think we're well prepared to make that happen." That, and a
little luck. "Thank you both. I'll see you tomorrow."
