Jalodwyn entered into the office, both surprised and a little hopeful
of the summons. After Yasha had informed her of her conversation with
H'rvin, she didn't know what to expect. Though she hadn't been pleased
with Yasha's decision to speak to the brownrider, perhaps it had
worked! Perhaps he'd convinced Thayde to loosen the restrictions on
her. Perhaps, just maybe, she'd be able to start over. "Master
Mertin, you asked to see me?"
Mertin smiled thinly. "Yes." He slid a hide over towards Jalodwyn.
Frowning, Jalodwyn picked it up and quickly read over it. She paled
and looked back up at Mertin. "What's this?"
"I think it's rather obvious." Mertin replied shortly. "Orders have
come down from the Hall that you're to be transferred back to
Dolphin's Cove effective immediately. You're to gather your things and
your child and be either on the next ship or you can ask a dragonrider
to transport you if you have the marks."
Jalodwyn's face fell as she looked at the Master Dolphineer, then back
at the hide. She struggled to speak, swallowed, and faced Mertin.
"Yasha...can..."
"Absolutely not. She will not be transferred; she's far too valuable
here. Just you and your child will be leaving."
Jalodwyn's eyes immediately stung with tears as she looked back down
at the hide. Yasha was the one person that she could absolutely trust
and rely on. Her support, her friend. How could they do this to her?
She couldn't face another loss, not again. She couldn't bear it.
Suddenly angry, she slammed the piece of hide on the desk, glaring at
Mertin as she reached with her hand to rip her knots off of her
shoulder. "No, I won't. You can go /between/." She slammed them on top
of the hide. "So can Thayde. Get shafted. Both of you."
The look on Mertin's face was something she'd remember; it was a
mixture of surprise, but shifted to relieved satisfaction as he looked
back up at her. "Very well." His voice remained calm. "You until the
next restday to get your affairs in order. Then get out of my Hall."
It was then that she realized that she'd given him exactly what he'd
been looking for all along. Well, fine. Even if she had to stay at the
Hold, at least she could still have her friend and see her every day.
She ignored the tears falling down her cheeks, the grief she felt at
losing the one thing that she'd worked her entire life for: her Craft
and her purpose. She spun on her heel and strode out, wiping her eyes
with quick hands.
When she came into the quarters she shared with Yasha, she was close
to sheer panic. Yasha rose from her chair and seeing Jalodwyn's face,
became alarmed. Her eyes flicked to the torn cloth on her shoulder and
she went still. "Jal...what have you done.... what..."
Jalodwyn sobbed and came to her friend, burying her face in her
shoulder. Yasha had to support the weight as her legs crumpled, then
eased her down to the ground holding her close to comfort her as she
was told through sobs what had happened and what had been done.
Yasha wrapped her arms tightly around Jalodwyn and held her, rocking
the other woman with soft murmurs. "It'll be okay. We'll be okay. I'm
not going anywhere, I promise."
In the office, Mertin looked at the note with satisfaction, then
tucked the tangled knots into the folded hide. It read: "Journeywoman
Jalodwyn declined the transfer. The matter is taken care of." His
small blue flit gripped the note and blinked /between/.
