Series: This is How a Heart Breaks

Characters: Gyllie, H'riv
Description: The pair celebrate Gyllie's thirtieth birthingday.
Location: Elsewhere on Pern
Date: month 8, day 12 of Turn 10

"H'riv," Gyllie groaned, although the hint of a smile played around her full mouth. "You promised, nothing extra on my birthingday. I don't want to be reminded of it."

"Hey, it's not everyday you turn thirty, you know. The big 3-0." H'riv answered back as Uuketh landed on a stretch of white beach.

There were some perks to sleeping with a dragonrider, Gyllie thought as she was helped from the brown's neck. Being able to go anywhere, to the mountains, the lake, or the beach.... **Such freedom,** she thought enviously. She often wondered if her life would be different had she come to the Weyr at an earlier age.

The sand was hot beneath her feet and she yelped a little as she hoped quickly from foot to foot while H'riv spread a blanket for them.

"That's what you get for going barefoot," the brownrider teased.

Gyllie dove onto the blanket with a giggle. Reaching down she grabbed the hem of her dress and pulled the entire up and over her head in one fluid motion. Beneath she wore a skin-tight swimsuit that left little to the imagination.

H'riv opened the basket he'd brought with them, pulling out some crunchy finger foods and a skin of fruit juice. "Snacks, my queen?" he said.

The redhead laughed, a delightful peal that came straight from her belly as she plucked a treat from the basket. "Yes, boy. You may go now," she flapped her hand at him.

"Perhaps my lady would like some lotion on her skin so she doesn't burn, hm?"

Gyllie looked down at her pale skin and then back up at H'riv. "Good thinking, drudge. You may stay and have the honor of applying it."

H'riv fought a grin. "You are too kind, your grace." H'riv knelt beside of Gyllie and began applying lotion, over her shoulders, along the graceful slope of her neck, down the ladder of her ribcage... anywhere that his fingers could go, he made sure that lotion was liberally applied.

"I'd better get under that swimsuit," he said, his tone a tad huskier. "Incase you end up swimming without it later."

Gyllie's eyes glinted with mischief as she spread her arms and laid back. "Go on then."

H'riv's hands swept beneath her swimsuit, over sensitive, silky skin, which he noted caused her skin to flush with little bumps. "Like that, do you?"

"Hm, yes your lotion applying techniques are... adequate."

He laughed, his lips going down to her lip. "Adequate, hm?"

Gyllie leaned back fully into his arms, her body undulating against his. "You are welcome to change my mind."

---

Water still trickled freely from Gyllie's hair and across her skin as she and H'riv collapsed back onto the blanket, darkening it quickly with the water from the bodies. A trail of wet footprints led up from the water, across the sand to their blanket.

"Now that's what I call water aerobics." H'riv said, still panting a little, his teeth a flash of white against his tan skin.

"Certainly more than adequate," she agreed, popping another treat into her mouth now that they had worked up such an appetite.

H'riv watched her, his eyes taking in minute details, such as the way her calloused fingers held the piece of fruit between them before pushing the wedge of redfruit past her lips. The light in her pale blue eyes was glowing with happiness and satisfaction from their foray in the water. Everything about her appealed to him in ways that no woman ever had. In the past he had always been able to find some flaws that ultimately ended whatever brief "relationship" had sprung up between him and a woman.

Gyllie had flaws, he certainly saw them, but rather than repelling him, they seemed to somehow make her even more desirable in H'riv's eyes.

"I got you something," he said, reaching into the basket.

"I said no presents," Gyllie pouted.

"I know. I didn't listen." H'riv pulled out a tiny box and then handed it to her.

Gyllie's expression was unreadable as she looked at the tiny package. At first, H'riv was afraid that she might not open it, but then she pulled the ribbon apart and pried the lid off.

"H'riv," Gyllie's voice was soft, having lost its laughter. "You shouldn't have." She lifted a gold necklace out of the box that blinked brilliantly when it caught the sunlight. It held a single, simple pendant with a blue gemstone that matched her eyes.

"Happy Birthingday," he said, his voice a tad gruff. He wasn't used to giving presents to women that weren't in his family.

"Put it on me?" she asked, turning her back to him.

H'riv smiled, pleased that she apparently liked the gift. After he had clasped the necklace around the slender column of her throat, he pressed a kiss to her bare shoulder. "I -" the words cut off as his brain sped up to his tongue. It had been on his tongue to say "I love you" but they had both agreed that their relationship wouldn't involve feelings and 'love'.

"I'm glad you like it," he settled for saying.

Gyllie either didn't notice, or pretended not to, because she turned and pressed her lips to his in a warm kiss. "Thank you, H'riv."
