J'nus looked at the candle in the corner when there was a knock on his office door. N'vanik was late... well, maybe not late, but he certainly hadn't hurried over when the Wingleader had summoned him.
"Come in."
N'vanik walked in and sat down without a word. He was pretty sure this was about the morning drill, but just in case it wasn't, he waited for J'nus to start the conversation. "I can't say that I was impressed with your performance today during drills, N'vanik," J'nus said. There was no sense in beating around the bush. He disliked it, and he had a feeling that N'vanik would appreciate him getting straight to the point rather than prolonging their meeting any longer than they needed to. "Quite frankly, I'm not sure if I want you in the air until you've had a chance to study the Wing formations from the ground."
From the ground?! "It won't happen again. I'm studying the charts tonight, and tomorrow I _will_ do it right." N'vanik was kicking himself for making such a stupid mistake.
"Thank you. But I'd still like for you to observe from the ground tomorrow. I think it will be easiest for both you and your Wingmates if we ease you back in."
Shards, not again. "And will Gilsha be watching from the ground too?"
N'vanik asked, anger creeping into his tone.
"No, Gilsha will not be observing from the ground because Gilsha knew where she was supposed to be. This is not a punishment, N'vanik,"
J'nus said evenly, "so please don't take it personally. You've been grounded for a month and I'd like to see you back in the sky as quickly as possible, but I don't want to do it at the expense of the trust of the men and women around you."
"But Gilsha . . ." N'vanik began, then stopped. He _had_ made a mistake, and since it involved drills, he was willing to own up to it. A mistake like that in Threadfall could cause an injury, or death. "Alright, fine. I'll watch tomorrow, and the next day I'll _show_ you that I can do it right." And if Gilsha screwed up again, it would be much more obvious.
"Good. I'll be watching." J'nus smiled and crossed his arms. "You have the hides already, so unless you have anything else you'd like to discuss, now would be a good time to get to work."
**You don't have to _tell_ me that.** N'vanik thought angrily. "Yeah, I'll get right on that," he said in a mostly even tone.
"In that case, I'll see you tomorrow, N'vanik."
"Yeah," N'vanik said as he rose from the chair. He should have spent more time studying his charts and a little less time drinking. A day spent watching from the ground would feel like penance for being under prepared.
