Description: K'don and Aviday are finally old enough for the fighting Wings.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 6 of Turn 11
The dining cavern was buzzing with weyrfolk at the height of dinner.
Once N'vanik got confirmation that both of the young riders in
question had arrived, he stood and called for quiet. "Today we have
something to celebrate. Two of the Weyrlingstaff Assistants are now
old enough to join the fighting Wings." He held up a set of knots for
Hurricane Wing. "K'don, why don't you come up here?"
K'don had been eagerly anticipating this day since the very moment his
classmates had graduated to the wings ahead of him. He cherished his
time in the infirmary, and he had every intention of continuing to
serve there, but now. Finally. He was going to be a real,
honest-to-goodness dragonrider. And moreover, he had just been called
by the weyrleader himself! How could it get any better than that?
}:Well, what were you riding before?:{ Maciath joked, and K'don
grinned. Mash was every bit as excited as he was.
**A great big wherry.**
K'don approached N'vanik, saluted, and stood at attention.
The Weyrleader handed the knots to the young brownrider.
"Congratulations K'don. Welcome to Hurricane Wing."
It took everything K'don had not to dance and fidget with excitement,
but he managed it. He could not, however, suppress his enormous,
ecstatic smile as he took the knots.
"Thank you, sir. It's. It's an honor."
N'vanik smiled back, then turned to nod to S'kand.
"And it's my pleasure to welcome you to Rapids Wing, Aviday!" S'kand
cheerfully held up the new set of knots and waved for her to join him.
"Come on down."
Struggling to keep still, Aviday glanced over at R'fal, flashed a
nervous, but excited smile, then when her name was called, hurried
forward to stand before S'kand and N'vanik. She stood straight,
looking small next to the older men, and only bounced twice on her
toes before taking the knots with a wide smile. While she was a bit
disappointed not to be placed in N'vanik's wing, the idea of being in
the wing with R'fal soothed that disappointment. They'd really be able
to fly together!
Aviday's excitement was contagious and S'kand smiled, but there was in
the back of his mind the usual worry he had to keep tamped down. She
was a young woman now. No longer a child. And she deserved the chance
as much as any of his other riders to fight to protect her home.
But the worry was good. It drove him to do everything he could to keep
the riders in his charge safe during Fall.
"Congratulations," he said.
"Welcome to the fighting Wings, K'don and Aviday," the Weyrleader
said. Applause and cheering echoed through the dining cavern.
R'fal joined in, standing alongside his wingmates to welcome the new
arrival to their Wing. As pleased as he was for Aviday, he felt a knot
of worry tighten inside him as she accepted her new knots from S'kand.
He'd known this day had to be coming soon, and flying in the
weyrlings' wing wasn't risk-free, but there was a part of him that
wished she and Kobeth wouldn't have to face Thread - not just yet.
Still, he didn't want to ruin her celebration, so he applauded
enthusiastically and nudged the greenrider next to him to make room at
their Wing's table.
