Ki'ben

Ki'ben

There wasn't much free time as a weyrling, but when he was free R'hil often found himself at the weyrlake. He liked swimming, but more than that, there were _girls_. One girl in particular, a pretty brunette he was pretty sure was a kitchen drudge. She had wide blue eyes and little dimples in her brown cheeks, and she was sitting nearby with a few friends dangling their feet in the water.

R'hil reddened and looked away as she glanced over-- just in time to see Ki'ben heading up the path toward him. He held up a hand and shouted the other weyrling's name, hoping that the girl would keep looking if he was loud. "Ki'ben!"

Ki'ben's chest nearly deflated when he heard R'hil call his name. The teenager had been walking past the girls, shirtless, shoulders set, chest out, showing off the 'muscles' he'd been 'growing' since the start of Weyrlinghood. He'd almost gotten up the nerve to walk over and start talking to the pretty redhead that was sitting beside the girl with the blue eyes and dimples.

He changed his path to meet R'hil halfway. "What's up man?"

"Think it's deep enough to dive off here?" He'd been eyeing the drop and was fairly confident that it would be fine, but you never knew.

Ki'ben glanced at the water. "Yeah, I think so. We could jump from that rock there," he said, tilting his head towards the large flat rock that extended out over the water, leaving a significant but doable drop.

They'd have to pass the girls to get there. R'hil scrambled to his feet. "Think you can do a flip?"

"Yeah, of course," Ki'ben said, although he wasn't as confident on the inside as he sounded on the outside. "What about you?"

"Absolutely. Probably two." He puffed out his chest a little as he said it. He'd done backflips into the river near his cothold, using a bridge as a platform and egged on by his brothers and cousin.

"Oh!" Ki'ben had a sudden idea. "What if I threw you a waterball _while_ you're jumping from the ledge and _then_ you flip into the water?"

"Pff. Easy." R'hil's grin was a little brittle as he glanced at the girls again. He'd totally be able to do that... right?

"Okay, man, you just go ahead and take off at a run. I'll throw the ball so that it should just be right there when you jump out into the air." Ki'ben assured Rhil.

Except they were missing a key part of their plan... "Sure. Know where to get a ball from?"

"Hang on, I saw some people with one up the beach." Ki'ben jogged off, leaving R'hil to stand alone and wait. This drew the attention of the group of girls, who were whispering and giggling.

The brown weyrling felt a twinge of envy. Of _course_ the girls would watch Ki'ben. He was the Weyrwoman's son, rode a bronze dragon, and he didn't have R'hil's ugly scars. He decided to take off his shirt and stretch, trying to look nonchalant even as he hoped that the brunette, at least, would look back his way.

"Okay," Ki'ben was panting a little as he jogged back to R'hil, holding a waterball triumphantly in one hand. "I had to agree to take nightwatch for a sevenday for this, so those girls had better notice."

"Oh man, they're cute," R'hil said quietly-- and with a sense of relief that Ki'ben had noticed them too. It would have been unbearable if he was totally oblivious and they were still looking at him. "They were totally watching you run."

The bronze Weyrling waved his hand. "Nah, man, I heard one of them saying your name when I went by. I'm sure."

**Yes!** R'hil nodded and tried to look like that sort of thing was normal. "Nice. All right. I want to try to do a flip _and_ catch the ball. I usually do backflips though... you need to stand close to the edge and throw the ball at me once I'm nearly done the flip."

"You got it." Ki'ben fist-bumped R'hil.

R'hil took a deep breath, then strutted over to the edge of the rock. The water beneath was dark but he trusted Ki'ben. Mostly. He backed onto the ledge and gripped it with his toes. Gravel bit his skin. He met Ki'ben's eye. "Ready."

Ki'ben gave R'hil the nod, cocked back his throwing arm, and when the brown Weyrling was exactly in place above the water, he tossed the ball. It was a beautiful throw, zipping in a straight line right toward R'hil's chest.

R'hil caught it.

Ki'ben caught a glimpse of R'hil's stunned expression before the brown weyrling hit the water with a splash.

Moments later he broke the surface with a triumphant WHOOP! and shook water from his hair. "That was awesome!"

Ki'ben's hands were still raised in triumph. He turned to see if the girls had noticed their moment of triumph, but he froze in his tracks when he realized that a) they were not looking, and b) they were staring at two other dragonriders who were walking by. His mother's weyrmate, R'enh, and his uncle, K'yne. The two seemed to be looking at some hidework as they walked, and so of course, they weren't paying anyone on the beach any attention at all.

**You've got to be kidding me,** Ki'ben inwardly groaned.

R'hil's grin dimmed as he looked from the girls to Ki'ben to where Ki'ben was looking. The girls weren't even trying to hide their admiring looks as the two old dragonriders walked past. Who was he kidding-- they looked like _men_ and he and Ki'ben looked scrawny by comparison. And anyway, what was the point of doing something cool if there weren't any girls to watch?!

..Except it had been pretty fun. He hauled himself out of the water and trudged up the cliff to where Ki'ben waited. "Your turn?"

The bronze Weyrling turned back to R'hil, mentally shrugging off the lack of attention from the girls. They weren't even that cute anyway.

"Yeah, man, let's do it."
