"Oh, come _on_, Biri... It's not that bad," Nialyn grinned at him, taking his hand and tugging him inside the storage room. "I promise."
"Not that I don't think looking for baby thingy's with you will be run,"
Birigundi said as tolerantly as possible, "its just... Well, isn't it a bit _early_ for this kind of thing?"
"It's never too early," she replied, already beginning to scan the shelves. "And besides, it's better to do it now while I can still walk reasonably normal!"
"All right," he sighed. There was no arguing with _that_. "So what are we looking for?"
Nialyn turned her head and gave him a patient, amused look. "Things for a baby, Biri."
"He gave her a sarcastic smile as he followed along behind her. "And just what does a baby _need_?"
"Well, you know... A crib, for starters. Blankets - soft ones, mind, not those old, scratchy things... I want the best for him." Nialyn glanced down at her stomach. "Or her..."
"Yeah, but how do we know what we want until we know if it is a him or her? I mean, a pink blanket for a boy is hardly proper." Birigundi was looking for any excuse to get out of this. Picking out cribs and blankets was not exactly his idea of a fun evening.
Oblivious to Birigundi's ulterior motives behind the questions, she began moving on more into the room. "Well, the Weyr has more than just _one_ storage room. If we don't find what we need here, we'll go to another one."
Well, that tactic didn't work. Birigundi decided to try another one. He walked up behind her and brushed her hair aside so he could slip in a couple kisses along the back of her neck. "Where's the storage room with the beds in it? So we can try out all those soft blankets, hmmm?"
She grinned, leaning her head back against him, letting his lips linger over her skin for a few more moments, enjoying the touch. "If you're a good boy," she finally murmured, "I'll take you back to my weyr when we're through here."
"Why not skip here, go straight to your weyr, and come back tomorrow? There will still be blankets and cribs in the morning..." he whispered nibbling her ear lobe.
"Mmmmmm..." Shards, that felt good. But... This was important. "No, Biri... We're here now." Nialyn turned her head slightly to glance at him out of the corner of her eye, her expression half-teasing. "And you can't slip away now like you probably could later."
"I would _never_ just slip away." His tone was indignant. He might be conveniently _called_ away, but... "Oh all right," Birigundi said resignedly. There was no getting out of this tedious task. They might as well get it over with so they could get back to much more fun ways to spend an evening. "Where are the blankets?"
"Why don't you look over there?" She pointed to the middle shelves. "Dig around. See if you can find some that are _neutral_-colored so we don't have to worry about coordinating boy and girl colors... But the most important thing is to make sure they're soft."
"Soft. Neutral. Right. Got it." Birigundi tried not to sigh too loudly as he walked over to the pile of blankets he ran his hands along the pile measuring their softness and wishing it was a woman's soft skin he was running his hand along. That would be _far_ more pleasant than this. At the end of the row was a small box. Curiously he peeked inside.
"Hey, Nia, look at these!" he grinned as he held up two little pairs of shoes. "Shards they both could fit into my hand. Aren't these the cutest things you've ever seen?"
"Aww... Biri, they're so cute! Where'd you find them?" Nialyn asked as soon as she was at his side, holding out her hand so she could take a closer look.
"Right here," he said pointing to the pile of children's shoes. "Oh hey, look!" He pulled out a slightly larger pair of boots. "They look just like a pair I have! But in miniature!"
"Maybe if it's a boy, you two could be matching," Nialyn grinned, looking up from the tiny shoes at him.
"I can't even imagine feet this small," he said as he dug through the box some more. "Do you think they might have running shoes?"
Her grin just got wider. At last! _Now_ he sounded a bit more enthusiastic. "Maybe! Why don't you keep searching, and I'll take a look at these blankets." She could just picture it, Biri taking their son or daughter on their first run around the Weyrlake... It'd certainly be a while until then, but still...
"Do you think there's some other baby stuff like this anywhere?" he called after her. Maybe there was a little running outfit too...
"If they have shoes, there must be other kinds of clothes too, Biri!"
she called back, her voice muffled by the piles of blankets she was searching through. "And make sure they're _soft_. Oh, and look for little booties too!"
"Booties?" Birigundi walked down the line of shelves trying to find where they might keep the baby clothing. "Oh hey, Nia! I found the cribs!"
Snatching up one of the blankets she'd kept on coming back to - shards, was it soft! - Nialyn hurried over to his side. "Feel this," she grinned, pushing the blanket into his hands before she went to take a closer look at the few cribs lined up side by side. They were all wooden, and seemed to be carved so smooth...
"Nice," he said rubbing the blanket against his cheek. "Do they make these for big people too?"
Nialyn pursed her lips thoughtfully as she ran a hand down the leg of one of the cribs. "If they do, I haven't been lucky enough to find one yet! They probably go to the goldriders...and the Weyrleader."
"Maybe we can commission one," Birgundi smiled as he walked over to her.
"Did you find one you like?"
Nodding, she straightened. "That one." She pointed to the one she'd been fingering. "The color's nice." Nialyn had always preferred darker wood to lighter. "And the legs and curved part underneath seem sturdy, which is important, obviously..."
"Oh, obviously," he nodded. "Look what else I found." He held up a small stuffed brown dragon with a proud grin. "Can we keep him? For the baby?"
"Or for you?" she teased with a laugh.
"I think I could learn to share." He laid the little dragon in the crib carefully and spread out the little blanket to tuck it in. "There, isn't that perfect?"
"Just need the baby now," she murmured, touching the tips of slender fingers to her stomach. Soon...
