Description: K'don and L'saz imagine a world in which a golden Faelath made him the Weyrlord and K'don his Sky Captain of the world of tomorrow.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 5 of Turn 10
K'don had never really understood why, but goldflights had always somehow unnerved him. But he had never been so close to part of one before. He loved Dessa. She was his dear friend and classmate. Or, at least, that was how he saw her. With K'don, there was always a worry somewhere in the back of his mind that no one saw him the way he saw them.
Maciath never really had a chance to catch Santhiath, but had that stopped him from trying? It felt weird. Wrong. And the way that it made K'don feel was even weirder and wronger. The moment she was caught, he finally found the awareness and wherewithal to run away.
And then the very next day, Thread fell. That was always its own jar of worms, but after he was already feeling off because of the flight, the stress and guilt from being held back with the Weyrling Wing was all the heavier.
So the next day, when he finally had a single moment to himself, he needed to get away someplace quiet and solitary. Despite all that, he was nonetheless happy to see that L'saz must have had the same thought. Seeing him was even better than being alone.
}:I see her! The most lovely Faelath. Hello, Faelath! May I sit with you?:{ asked Maciath.
}: Of course! :{ Faelath trilled. She shuffled a few feet to the side to make room for the brown. There was actually plenty of room for him to sit down without her moving at all, but surely the thought counted for something.
Meanwhile, the weyrling pacing up and down the beach came to a stop. He turned to face K'don with eyes that were dull, dreary, and perhaps even a little red around the edges. "K'don," he greeted, trying to sound cheerful and likely coming across as tired. "'Sup?"
Maciath happily set down and snuggled up next to Faelath.
K'don's eyes widened when he saw L'saz, but he tried not to react any further. He knew he would not want him to draw any attention to it.
"Hey," he said. "Uh, yeah, 'sup." He chuckled nervously.
}:Smooth.:{
**Shut up, you.**
"Um, I, uh... Wow, so, hey, did you know Santiath rose? So, uh, more eggs soon, right? Hatchings are fun. Except, you know. The last one, but... So, how are you?"
L'saz's lips twitched up into a frail smile. "I think that saying the last hatching _wasn't fun_ is a bit of an understatement."
Or, you know, an incredibly massive one.
L'saz turned away from K'don to walk over to the dragons. With a heavy sigh, he flopped down to sit in the sand on Faelath's other side. "I'm alive. For now." After a moment of hesitation, he looked back to K'don. "You?"
}: He is _dramatic_, :{ Faelath's conspiratorally whispered to Maciath.
K'don followed and when L'saz looked back, he sat down next to him.
"A little rattled," he admitted. "I, um... Usually, I... Well, when goldflights happen... I have a little hidey hole I found, and I usually go and wait there until they're over. But this time Maciath tried to chase, and... I was kind of in his head and couldn't really control what my own body was doing quite as well. It was like it kinda just... did its own thing for a minute. The whole thing, it was just... not fun."
"Sorry... I probably shouldn't have dumped that all on you."
"It's fine." A bitter smile twisted at L'saz's lips. "I impressed green. I need to accept that reality at some point, right?" He heaved a sigh before looking back out at the water. "Look at the bright side. Maciath's a brown, you probably don't need to worry about actually _catching_ a gold, at least."
K'don blushed, feeling somewhere in the zone of mortified.
"I really did stick my foot in my mouth, didn't I?" he said. "Is that... you know, Faelath rising, is that something you're worried about?"
"Don't know how I could not be worried about it," L'saz flatly said. "But worrying won't change anything. Thread..." He shrugged, weaving the fingers of one hand through the sand beneath him. "I might be able to do something about that, maybe."
"It is easier to fight Thread than flights," K'don murmured in agreement.
}:What does he mean, he might be fit to do something about Thread?:{ asked Maciath. }:I do not like the ring of that.:{
"Er... What did you have in mind to do about it?"
"I... don't really know," L'saz lamely admitted. "But, I mean, I can come up with _something_ to get out of threadfall, right? But flights... that's just nature. There really is _nothing_ that I can do about it."
"Oh." K'don was a touch relieved to hear that L'saz did not have imminent plans to harm himself. He would not have thought of it if Maciath had not. "I'm sorry. I... I wish I could do something to help you. I don't like not being able to help."
The corner of L'saz's mouth quirked up in a dry grin. "Paint Maciath bronze, make yourself Weyrleader, and give greenriders the option to opt out of threadfall. Do that, and I'll take up harpering just to write you a ballad."
K'don laughed and wrinkled his nose.
"Not while my mom is the Weyrwoman, that's for sure!"
Of course, opting out of fighting Thread was not something a dragonman could do. Not when there was so much at stake. But it was just as likely to happen as K'don becoming Weyrleader.
"Dragonsfall," L'saz suggested. "Hostile takeover."
"I'm... kinda never allowed to go there again," said K'don. "So Saibra probably wouldn't be thrilled to find me in her furs after a flight."
L'saz's smile disappeared in an instant. "Right, sorry," he said. "I kinda... forgot about that."
"Hey, it's alright!" Seeing L'saz's smile vanish was like a kick to K'don's heart. "Don't worry. It's too cold there anyway, right? When we take over the world together, we'll do it from someplace warm." He offered a tentative smile of his own.
"Ista," L'saz said with a nod. "I swear, Faelath has the willpower of a gold. Paint her hide, don't let anyone get to close - no one will be able to tell the difference. Then if we grease Maciath up and call him a tiny bronze, we're _set_."
"And golds don't fight, eh? Not the same way greens do," said K'don. "Are you ready to be the first junior weyrman?"
}:I am not tiny,:{ Maciath complained. }:But you are more than welcome to be my queen, Faelath.:{
}: Why thank you, :{ Faelath purred. }: We will dazzle all of Pern, I am sure. :{
L'saz, meanwhile, did not take to the concept quite so fast. Wrinkling his nose he said, "How about Weyrlord? That has some _gravity_ to it."
"That sounds amazing!" K'don's eyes lit up. "Weyrlord L'saz and his graceful queen, Faelath."
L'saz grinned. "You still wanna be Weyrleader? Or do you have a better title in mind for yourself, too?"
"Well, I'm hardly equipped to be the Weyrlady," said K'don. "But I kinda like the sound of Captain of the valiant Weyrlord's Sky Guard."
L'saz tilted his head back to let out a bright laugh. "_Captain of the valiant Weyrlord's Sky Guard_. That is. Brilliant. Go for it."
K'don beamed at L'saz's laugh. It was so wonderful to hear that happy sound from him.
"I rather like the sound of Captain K'don." Master K'don was more likely, if he kept up with his dragonhealing â€" and he meant to â€" but this was much more fun.
"Captain K'don," L'saz mused. "I could see it. Shards, it'd be a good look for you. Go for it."
"Yeah?" K'don smiled brightly. There was something about L'saz saying that that made him inexplicably happy. And it made him want to try it. He had no idea what he could be captain of. But maybe it would be worth figuring something out. "Maybe I will."
