K'ran

K'ran

J'nus rubbed his hand over his wet hair and went looking for his boots. The benefit of being one of the older bronzeriders at the Weyr was a private bathing chamber - a small one, but it was his alone.
**If not, I might have had to move into U'kaiah's old weyr to steal his.** He surveyed his room; all the rugs, the carvings, the models and books and other odds and ends. A lifetime's worth of _stuff_ -
his Trader parents would have been horrified. **Then again, maybe not.**

His boots were by the door, and once he was suitably attired the bronzerider left his weyr to visit the new transfer. Another bronzerider this time, from Far Island. It seemed that they were getting a lot of transfers from there - S'rak, now K'ran. And Corvera... **Kopth, is Rogueth's rider in his weyr?**

There was a lengthy pause as Kopth asked around; being new, Rogueth wasn't as easy to track down as a familiar dragon, let alone his lifemate. }:Yes.:{
**Tell him to tell his rider that I'm on his way to see him, please.:{ J'nus turned down K'ran's hallway and knocked on his door.
Hopefully that was enough time for the bronzerider to prepare himself.

}:Kopth's rider is coming to see you.:{ Rogueth warned, craning his head to look at his rider.

K'ran jumped up from where he'd been lying, back against Rogueth's soft middle, and set his riding straps on the bed. He looked around, wondering if there was a chair- yes, there in the corner there was one! Then he heard the knock. Going to the door and answering it, he smiled. "Good day, sir, and my duty to your dragon." he began formally. He never knew what might come up in this conversation, and best to start it out right.

J'nus hadn't known what to expect, really, but he was surprised to find himself looking- down. He wasn't a tall man but K'ran made him feel like a monster. "Uh- welcome to Dragonsfall Weyr, K'ran," he said, hoping that the other bronzerider hadn't noticed his surprise.
He stuck out his hand. "I'm J'nus."

"Thank you for the welcome, J'nus." K'ran replied, taking the offered hand. "Please come in. Would you like a drink? I only have water for now I'm afraid." he apologized. He didn't know anyone here yet. K'ran wasn't slow- he'd noticed the look, but only peripherally; he was used to it by now.

"Water is fine." J'nus stepped inside and took a curious look around.
K'ran hadn't had much of a chance to unpack yet, and the bronzerider couldn't spot any of the odds and ends that would give him clues as to who the man before him was. "I'm not much of a drinker."

"I'll confess I'm not overly inclined to it myself." K'ran replied.
He poured two glasses and handed one to the taller bronzerider. Then he gestured to the chair. "You're welcome to sit." he said, wishing his weyr wasn't so sterile right now. In a few days, with all of the knickknacks unpacked... "How can I help you?"

"I thought I would come by to introduce myself and welcome you properly to my Wing. Hopefully your quarters are to your liking? You have everything you need?"

"I don't need very much." K'ran replied. "I used to travel a lot before I Impressed," he qualified, "and then I transferred from Far Island to Ista. My quarters are larger here than at Ista, actually."
he added. He didn't make snap judgments, but from what he saw, J'nus was a good man- he met him personally, which was a good mark in K'ran's mind.

"You were assigned one of the larger weyrs - there are many that are smaller." J'nus smiled and rolled the glass between his palms.
"Hopefully you'll settle in quickly. You'll find that most of us here at Dragonsfall are pretty accommodating to new transfers."

"I'm grateful for the assignment then." K'ran smiled in return. There would be plenty of places to show some of his things, then. "I'm looking forward to meeting people here. Tell me, is there anything important about Dragonsfall that I need to know?"

The older bronzerider shrugged. "Not so much. It's like other Weyrs in the South, only it gets colder in the wintertime. We have a new Weyrwoman - Corvera. But I'm sure that you already know her. The only real piece of information that you need to be aware of is that I'm only the temporary Wingleader, and Cyan's usual Wingleader will be returning when he is- able." He was proud that he didn't sound bitter. The words were still bitter to say, but there was nothing he could do about the situation except do the best he was able.

"Corvera... She was at Far Island." K'ran said after a moment. "Yes, I'm aware of her." He knew Rogueth had chased her once, despite his desire for that to not happen... fortunately he'd lost. He wondered if she even remembered- probably not. They'd never really spoken.
"I'm familiar with working under changing leaders, actually." he remarked. "Not so much after I Impressed, but before. I don't think it will cause a problem for me settling in." K'ran offered. He imagined it would be a hard situation to be in, and he didn't want to make it worse in any way for J'nus.

"I'm glad to hear it." J'nus pulled a rolled set of hides from his pocket, which he handed to K'ran. "These are our current Wing formations. Study these, and I'll have you watch from the ground for the next few days until you're confident enough to take your place within the Wing itself. Depending on how well you perform, we'll see whether or not we can have you fly in the next Fall."

K'ran nodded. "I can accept that." he said. Inwardly he promised himself he would spend the night studying them and try to work into the wing as quickly as possible. J'nus didn't seem the type who would ground him just because of how Rogueth looked. No, he didn't- K'ran decided he would work his best to get a fair chance from this man.
There was also another matter...

"Your Wing has been helping with the Amethyst Cliff disaster, hasn't it?" he began hesitantly.

"As much as we are able to, yes."

"I have to wonder...have you seen my brother? He's short, just like me, and was a Guard there. My twin, actually." K'ran shook his head slightly. "it's okay if you haven't, I'm just curious."

J'nus hesitated, then shook his head. He'd seen a lot of people over the last few days; battered, bruised, and grieving. They were beginning to blur together in his memory. "I can't say that I have.
If you need the co-ordinates to go /between/, I can introduce you to the next few volunteers who are going over there. Ask to speak with the Steward. He'll know where your brother is, and if he doesn't, he'll know where to begin to look for him."

"I appreciate it." K'ran said quietly. "It means a lot." He paused for a moment. "It's been hard to help them for you, hasn't it? And how does that work? Outside of Wing duties in spare time?" He almost blushed. "I know I'm new, but... I want to help if I can, in the Wing, the Weyr, anywhere."

"Right now, it's mainly transport duty. We're flying the injured to Amber Hills if they can handle the journey, and flying people like Cyrek - Amethyst Cliff's Steward - back and forth between the Holds.
Medical supplies, food, blankets, tents..." J'nus sighed. "You're right; it hasn't been easy. Our first duty is to fly Thread, and I can't justify turning our attention from drills completely during a Pass. We cut back on drills a little right after the earthquake, but right now it's mainly a spare time mission run by volunteers."

K'ran nodded in understanding. "Thank you for filling me in about it." he said softly, hoping that he'd find the time, what with settling in, to help out. Corran...he had to find out. "So, study formations, watch grounded for a bit, fly for a bit, then join in Fall?" he asked, to make sure he had everything clear.

"Yes. Let me know when you feel confident enough with our formations to take to the air. Our morning drill takes place a candlemark after dawn."

K'ran nodded, committing the information to memory. "I'll be there, sir!" he replied. "Thank you for taking the time to welcome me and fill me in." he added.

"It was good to meet you, and I'm glad to have you in Cyan. I'll be watching to see just what you and your dragon can do."

"It was good to meet you too, and I promise we won't disappoint, sir." K'ran said with a smile. Yes, he and Rogueth would show them.
