Regret

Writers: Curious
Date Posted: 19th June 2024

Characters: Dryvan, Inyara
Description: Dryvan transfers to Barrier Lake Weyrhold
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 13, day 12 of Turn 11

The letter had been nondescript, the instructions simple.

Dryvan was to move to Barrier Lake Weyrhold. The Shadow had need of him.

He did not ask why he was supposed to transfer. It was not his place to question. It was not his place to doubt or hesitate or do anything except for what he was told. He was a part of a greater cause now, a tool to be used, and all that he could do was embrace that and play his rule until their mission saw success or the end came for him.

That was okay. That was _good_, even. Dryvan had chosen this. He should be happy that the Shadow had use for him. Dolphin Cove’s watchrider was dead because of _him_; he had doubtlessly acknowledged that and decided that Dryvan could be even more useful than he had originally realized. Dryvan had no clue why he was more useful at Barrier Lake than Dolphin Cove, but that didn’t matter. He would get his answers eventually, and until then, he just had to trust that this was a good thing. He had to smile and be happy and remember what he had set out to do and keep doing that. Shards, if he could do so openly, he would _celebrate_!

He couldn’t celebrate. He couldn’t do a single thing that would run the risk of making him look suspicious. All that he could do was what was told, but that much, at least, he could do well.

It was staggeringly easy to get a transfer to Barrier Lake Weyrhold. When asked why he wanted to transfer, he said that he had family at the Weyrhold and wanted to stand with them. No one bothered to fact check. After all, why would someone lie about their reason for wanting to transfer? Why would someone make up a fake cousin just to stand at a different Weyr? It was _insane_!

What Dryvan was doing wasn’t insane. It was good and just and right, and he needed to keep his eyes on his goal without doubting or hesitating or thinking about it or"

He needed to do what he was told. That was all.

It was a beautiful day when he exited the lower caverns of Barrier Lake Weyrhold, his transfer finalized. His heart was beating so hard that he felt like it might burst through his ribcage, but he grinned like all his dreams had come true.

He had barely made it a few steps before a sour voice said, “You’ll regret coming here.”

Dryvan’s racing heart dropped into his stomach. Turning around to face a woman with a hunter green candidate hovering awkwardly behind her, he asked, “What?”

The weyrling crossed her arms. “You’re a new transfer, right?”

Dryvan nodded hesitantly.

“You’ll regret coming here. This place has a way of ruining your life,” she spat.

Dryvan took a step back. “Did something happen to you?”

The weyrling let out a bitter laugh. “Ask about Inyara, the gossip will reach you soon enough.”

Inyara stalked off then, her dragonet racing after her.

“I’m sorry!” Dryvan called after her.

Inyara didn’t respond.

Whatever. That was. Irrelevant.

Dryvan would do his job. He would do it well.

And then Barrier Lake would burn.
