K'mai

K'mai

"Well, if it isn't my favorite new bluerider," K'mai said as he sauntered up to Sh'vair.

The weyrling grinned up at his favorite bluerider period. "Hi, K'mai. I'm just finishing Nidogath's oiling. It's taking much longer than before."

"Just wait til he's full grown. That blue hide will seem to go on forever."

"Well, that wouldn't be so bad," Sh'vair shrugged. Thinking of when Nidogath was full grown... "Um.. so how is Sebeth?"

"He's good. And how about your little Nidogath? Is he pestering you with questions yet?" K'mai remembered how curious Sebeth had been when he was young. **Haven't changed much, have you?**

}:I got bigger. You keep telling me that, :{ the blue answered, causing K'mai to chuckle.

"All the time. He was especially curious about..." Sh'vair blushed again ever so slightly and lowered his voice, "... about mating flights."

"Ahhh . . . that's a tough one to answer, isn't it?" K'mai said. "No matter how you try to explain it, they still don't understand." And it was probably embarrassing for someone like Sh'vair.

"Well, Nocte helped me. I told him we'd talk about it later," the weyrling said with a wink, sure K'mai would catch onto the tactic.

}:Isn't it later now?:{ Nidogath asked, suddenly remembering his rider's promise.

**Not now, love. I'm talking to K'mai,** Sh'vair replied, knowing it was a good excuse to put the little blue off once more.

"I see." The older rider nodded. "I wish I'd thought of that before trying to explain it to Sebeth when he first asked."

"He doesn't ask you difficult questions anymore?"

K'mai laughed. "Oh, he sure does! Just not as many, and he usually understands my explanations better."

"Oh well. I guess its just something I'll have to get used to then,"
Sh'vair said with an overly dramatic sigh. "Its not that bad, really. Its fun to talk with Nidogath. He says the funniest things and always makes me laugh. Usually at the most inappropriet times."

"Like the middle of class?" K'mai asked with a knowing smile.

"Or in the bathing pool," Sh'vair said with a slight blush. "One girl thought I was laughing at _her_..."

"I've had that happen, too." The bluerider grinned. "They certainly do make life more interesting."

"Yes," Sh'vair smiled, but it faltered a little. "But, K'mai, can I tell you something?"

"Sure." K'mai said, wondering if what the Weyrling had to say was good or bad.

"I'm... not so sure I'm cut out to... you know... fight _Thread_."

"I used to feel like that, too." K'mai nodded solemnly. "Especially at the beginning. But our dragons chose us for a reason, chose us to be their partners. And that includes being their partner in Threadfall."

"But I don't know if I'm that brave really," Sh'vair replied quietly.

"Most of us were afraid at first. A lot of us still are." K'mai put a gentle hand on his shoulder. "But I think you'll be surprised how much strength there is in you."

"Really? You really think so?" Sh'vair asked with a hopeful smile. If _K'mai_ believed he could do it... "I'll do my best. Thanks, K'mai."

"You're welcome." K'mai smiled, patting the weyrling's back.
