Description: Gordenic checks in with Corofel before arranging a meeting with Jayala.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 18 of Turn 11
Notes: Mentioned: Reven, Jylanya, Jayala, Corowal
Gordenic entered Corofel's office, his customary stack of papers in
his hands. The main focus of this meeting were to ensure they were on
the same page about Gordenic's upcoming meeting with the Hallsecond at
the Harper Hall. However, as always, there were some other small
matters to discuss. "Lord Corofel," he said with a nod, taking a seat.
"Gordenic." Corofel nodded with deep appreciation to the man. His help
had been as indispensable thus far as Reven's and Jylanya's. He would
have been lost without them. "Please, have a seat. Everything is
arranged for you to meet with Jayala?"
"Just about." Gordenic looked down at his agenda for that meeting.
"We'll finalize arrangements for harper entertainment at Turn's End.
I'll ask about your brother, although I'm sure he's doing well." Since
Lord Corowal's disappearance, Ofewal had been put under additional
protection as he continued his apprenticeship at the Hall. "And then,
depending on how the conversation goes, I'm hoping to put in a request
for traveling harpers to keep an eye out for boys who might show
promise as understewards. Now, for the entertainment, do you have any
particular requests for instruments or kinds of music?"
"I want it to be as much like the last one as possible. It should be
familiar. Comforting. People who come should feel like they could
swear they were here just the other day," said Corofel.
Gordenic made a noncommittal sound, but kept his opinion to himself.
There were more significant matters to attend to. "I'm sure that can
be arranged." He eyed his list again, looking at the most important
item. "Now, White Hollow Hold..." Corofel had filled him in about
Holder Obriel's use of prisoners in the quarry and the action taken
against the Weyr. Learning about this had been the first time Gordenic
had wondered if becoming Steward had been a smart decision. However,
hopefully he could play a role in uncovering the truth and bringing
those involved to justice.
Corofel leaned forward.
"Anything I have left still to do, I want to do it as soon as
possible. I can't abide letting that go on a moment longer than is
strictly necessary to keep everything above board and proper."
The Steward nodded. "Were you able to find any of Lord Corowal's
private records? Or any other information? As far as I can tell, no
one on my staff was in contact with any informants. it seems your
father kept this close to his chest."
"Nothing. I've searched for secret compartments, or... any kind of
hidden whatsit. Captain Oriel even sent someone to help me search.
Either he kept his records somewhere even a guard wouldn't think to
search for them, or someone took them. Perhaps he asked Captain Zandan
to move them when he retired... but if he did, he didn't tell Oriel
about it. All I have is speculation." Corofel did not want to say
aloud that it was more likely that if his father was kidnapped, the
perpetrators had also taken his secret records.
But there was something about that possibility that he did have to address.
"If... If someone else did take them, then they would know everything
he knew. And they could have already alerted White Hollow. I'd rather
believe that he knew how dangerous that possibility was, and that's
why we can't find them. But we have to be prepared for a trap..."
Gordenic nodded. "Lord Corowal was smart and careful. However, I agree
that it's best to be prepared for the worst. Just listen to Captain
Oriel and don't take unnecessary risks," he advised, not for the first
time. The last thing the Hold needed was for anything to happen to the
young Lord.
"In more ordinary news, a number of crafters have contracts ending
soon. Many can easily be renewed, but there are a few retirements, and
a crafter or two with overly large living quarters we might want to
renegotiate. I'm working on a report with all of this information that
I can share with you soon. We can also have a conversation soon about
whether there are any big projects you're considering that would mean
changes to the number of crafters at the Hold. I'll also include some
preliminary ideas in the report." The day-to-day running of the Hold
needed to continue, even as they continued to investigate Lord
Corowal's disappearance.
"I'll look forward to seeing your suggestions!" said Corofel. He had
no ideas for big changes for the time being. He meant to deliver the
hold back to his father in at least as good a condition as he had left
it.
Putting a final check mark next to his agenda items, the Steward asked
politely, "Anything else we should discuss?"
"Unless you have any further recommendations, I'm content to leave you
be." Corofel smiled.
With a final nod, Gordenic gathered his things and stood. "You know
where to find me. I'll let you know how the meeting with the
Hallsecond goes."
