"Uh... Master Aivorn?" Journeyman Dalbek stood in the Master Beastcrafter's office door, running his finger's through his short brown hair nervously. "I have that saddle you brought to me to be repaired. It's finished."
"It is? Good, thank you Dalbek," Aivorn replied.
"Not a problem, sir," the tanner smiled shyly. "Um... sir, may I talk to you for a moment?" "Of course you can," the beastcrafter answered and gestured him to take a seat.
"Thank you." The journeyman hesitated only a moment before taking the offered seat. "Well, sir I was hoping I could talk to you about your daughter."
"About my daughter?" Aivorn repeated. He was instantly on his guards.
Young man who wanted to talk about his daughter didn't bode well. "Yes." Dalbek rubbed his sweaty palms absently against his trousers. "She... hasn't been spoken for yet... has she?"
"No, nothing about _you_ anyway," Aivorn said. In fact, Aishara knew better than mention young men to her father. She could talk everything else with him but not her possible lovelife. Those she confessed to her old milkmother Heludia.
The journeyan swallowed hard. Shards, the Master Beastcrafter didn't look pleased. "Well... I was hoping I could ask your permission to... to call on her."
"What do you mean by call on her?" Aivorn's expression was turning into a one that sent his apprentices to take cover.
Dalbek was trying to put his best 'manly' front forward, but the look on Aivorn's face was nothing short of intimidating. "Well.. uh... I was thinking perhaps I could come by on an evening that was free for both you and her when I could just... visit, perhaps have a cup of tea with her. Of course, I would be more happy if you would want to chaparone." "You're darn right there better be chaparone," Aivorn growled. He was aware that his daughter needed to meet young men and find herself a husband. He just didn't like it.
"Then you are not opposed to my visiting, then?" The tanner held his breath. Up until now he and Aishara had only exchanged smiles, glances and polite pleasantries. He had no idea if she liked him, or even noticed him, but he had noticed her self-assuredness, her friendly smile, her intelligence, and he truly liked what he had seen...
"Well, guess I have to allow it. I can't lock her up forever," Aivorn said grudgingly. Oh, but how he wished he could lock her up and prevent her growing up. A quick rush of air escaped Dalbek as his face broke into a hopeful smile. "Thank you, sir. Thank you," he rose to his feet and spontaneously reached out a hand to the master crafter. He knew it didn't mean anything was guaranteed, far from it, but at least it was a first step in the right direction.
Aivorn just gave the hand a flat look. He was not going to encourage this lad, and certainly hoped his daughter wasn't either.
Dalbek's smile faded ever so slightly as he dropped his hand. "All right then how about tomorrow?"
"Probably fine," Aivorn grumbled unhappily. He was sure going to be at home when this lad came to visit!
"Fine! That's just fine!" The smile brightened once more. "Good then," he nodded as he turned for the door. "Oh, wait," Dalbek chuckled as he turned back to face the craftsman. "I completely forgot about your saddle. Would you like to inspect it before I leave?"
"Yes, I want to inspect it," Aivorn replied. "Shall I bring it in here then?"
"Take it to the saddleroom and I'll come there in a minute," Aivorn said. "All right," the young man enthusiastically nodded. He felt so excited about his meeting with Aishara the next day, he would have carried it to the Red Star and back if the master had asked him. Not wanting to press his luck, he hurried out of the room to do as Aivorn requested, a broad smile illuminating his face.
