Alrog looked at his sister with a pride. She looked absolutely radiant, and the clever cut of her weddingdress hid the fact she was no longer innocent maid. "Shall we go then?" Alrog asked, offering his arm to her. Since their father was dead, the honour of giving the bride away fell to Alrog's shoulders. The first notes of the wedding march started and they stepped inside the hold's grand hall.
There was something about a wedding, thought Fieayz as she watched the holder escort his sister to her groom. The harper stood at the front, a smile on his face as he waited with the groom. He wasn't bad looking either, but his attention was clearly focused on a young woman carrying a child, someone said she was his wife, a daughter of a Lord Holder no less.
Alrog handed his sister over to the groom. The young miner looked like he could faint, run away and burst with pride, all the same time. Alrog joined his mother in the front row, briefly scanning the spectators. For a small, modest wedding, there was surprisingly many guests, many of them eligitable young women. All his mothers doing.
Carlan started his speech, formally starting the ceremony. As always with weddings, he was reminded of his own, and he spared a moment to glance over at Nikanna, Ryannae bundled on her lap.
Alrog noticed that his mother was dapping her eyes with a handkerchief. She had been furious when she heard of Rolfina's surprise pregnancy, but forgave it when she got busy with the preparations.
Carlan turned first to Miron. "Miron, I believe you have in your posession a mark?" He waited a moment for the young man to produce it. "Hold it in your hand, and in your own words, tell Rolfina why you wish to marry her."
One day maybe, thought Fieayz. Had she stayed at the Weyr this wouldn't be an option, there people took weyrmates. It wasn't quite the same as this, all this effort to show how much you loved some one. Maybe even the Holder himself might look at her that way one day. That was certainly a pleasant thought.
Miron took the mark and started his speech. "Rolfina, I love you like I love life itself. You're so beautiful, so full of life and laughter. You are the gem of my heart."
"That's a miner for you," Alrog muttered dryly, but he have to admit he was touched. The young man's sincerity and devotion were so obvious. It would be nice to feel that whey, he thought wistfully.
"Now offer that mark to Rolfina," said Carlan as he turned to the young woman. "Rolfina, if you find his words pleasing, tell him so, and what it is that makes them so. Then take the mark from him."
Rolfina took the mark, almost snatched it. "I find you words warming my heart. I find you pleasant, I love the way you laugh, love the way you look at me and the way your ears stick out."
This made the groom turn bright red. His ears did stick out, like basket handles, Alrog thought critically.
Rolfina was continuing: "...and I love teasing you. My heart is yours." "In the presence of witnesses, these two people have declared their intentions. A mark has been offered and accepted, sealing them. As such, they are now married."
The crowd cheered and broke up to congratulate the beaming pair. Alrog found himself next the fosterling from Smith hall. "Hi, Fieayz. Nice that you could come. Will you be staying for the festivities?" he greeted.
"I'd like to," replied the girl. There really was something about the Holder, she was sure her father would approve of her talking to such a man.
"Your sister looks lovely, I hope she and her husband will be very happy together."
"So do I" Alrog said from the bottom of his heart. Little happiness was what his family needed. "If you're staying, can I reserve you for a dance?" the young holder asked.
Of course he could, and Fieayz told him so. He was nice to look at, and while not like a dragonrider, there was something about the Holder... He was young as well. "A dance would be fun."
"Good," Alrog smiled at her. "I'm looking forward to it. But now I have to tend some duties as a host," he apologized and kissed her fingers. Like make a speech.
Fieayz blushed a little at the courtesy, she couldn't help wondering if he was always so polite...
Carlan meanwhile finished the piece of music he was playing as the Holder came to the front of the room.
Alrog held his speech and congratulated the newly weds, wishing them happy marriage and many children, (they already had a headstart in that matter.)
Then he invited everyone to the table. His mother had really seen the effort with the banquet. It almost rivalled with the Lord Holder's. There were local delicacies like goatmilk cheese and mountain game. The wines were local too, because the vintner hall was unfortunately out of business due the earthquake.
