Lueanth came out of /between/ screaming. Across her neck Cherlyn gave her careful reassurances.
The wounded green landed akwardly. Cherlyn soothed her dragon as she slid off the neck.
A young weyrling came over.
"Numbweed!" Cherlyn called, soothing her dragon at the same time.
"I have it." Cortana assured the worried rider. "Now let me have a look. Were was she scorred."
"Her wing." Cherlyn gasped. Feeling her own pain as well as her dragons.
"shhh, shhh," Cortana soothed as she looked over the scorred wing. The two green riders slathered numbweed onto the small wound. "There now. That's that settled." Cortana said, and called for a washbowl.
Cherlyn leaned against her dragon, spent. She hissed as pain ran up her side.
"But your hurt too." Cortana gasped, deftly opening Cherlyn's riding gear and ripping the scorred shirt.
"It's nothing." Cherlyn lied.
"Now I think I'd know better than you. Seeing as I'm a healer. You'd better sit down." The two women sunk to the ground. As Cortana dealed with the minor score, she talked to Cherlyn, as she'd been taught.
"I'm Cortana, and you are?"
"Cherlyn." the woman gasped.
"This wound isn't very deep. You'll be able to fly next fall, but I'll have to talk to Pacham about grounding you for a few days." Cortana's deft fingers closed up the wound nicely. "I've never seen you around before. Are you a transfer?"
"No. I don't leave my weyr much. I'm kind of shy." Cherlyn blushed even as she said this. "Lueanth's score won't mess up her flying any, will it?"
"Oh no. She'll be fine after a good meal and some sunning. I'm a greenrider myself you know. My Anath hatched not to long ago." Cortana was having trouble making conversation with Cherlyn. Most greenriders loved to talk.
"Then congradulations. Have you flown her yet?" Cherlyn asked.
"Oh yes. We flew together for the first time only yesterday." Cortana's eyes grew soft as she remembered that incredible feeling.
"Then you haven't been through a mating flight." Cherlyn surmised.
"Oh but I have. You see I have a green firelizard." As if on cue, a large green flit appeared above Cortana's head. She was shortly followed by a tiny brown. "See." Trill and Royal landed close to Cortana.
"They're lovely." Cherlyn said.
"There now." Cortana said, standing up. She helped Cherlyn to her feet. They both dusted themselves off.
"have you been through a flight before?" Cortana asked casually as she began gathering up her tools.
"Once or twice." Cherlyn's blush turned a deeper red.
"I didn't spend four years caring for children not to realize when someone is hiding something." Cortana said to Cherlyn giving her the staredown.
"Well...um... Lueanth's getting close,...and I met this guy at a beach, and..." Cherlyn began to ring her hands around the strip of torn tunic.
"Oh I see." Cortana said, winking broadly.
"no, you don't. He lives almost half a world away, and I don't know what I'm suposed to do, and." The older women was getting worked up. Her breathing became faster, and her face flushed.
"Now I didn't mean anything by it." Cortana said putting her arms around the girl. "Now I don't pretend to be an expert on Weyr life. I've only been her a few months, but since your a greenrider, you aren't exactly top priority."
"Don't remind me." Cherlyn said, hanging her head.
"No, listen. Since there is so many of us, couldn't you just put in for a transfer?" Cortana asked the older greenrider.
"What?" Cherlyn had never even _thought_ of that. She _could_ transfer. She'd have to deal with the paperwork right away. "thank you. Thank you so much." With that Cherlyn and Lueanth headed off to the feeding grounds.
"My pleasure." Cortana said to the retreating figure. "It's what I was trained to do." With that final remark to noone in particular, she headed off to the next crisis.
