Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 23 of Turn 3
The last egg was adjusted just so and the gold announced, }:That's all the eggs.:{ Jyramikah just shook her head and smiled. Now came the fun part, counting the eggs. "Now we count. Z'al if you'd take that side, I'll take the middle here. Can you count that side over there, Dirwol?" she instructed the two men without a second thought. They were there to help if she needed them to and she certainly wasn't going to be the only one counting. It looked to be a significantly smaller clutch than any of the more recent ones, but she would know for sure in a few moments.
Both men started counting. They made a quick count. There were not as many as Z'al had hoped but he was happy non the less. He waited till it looked as if the other two were done with there counts and walked over to them.
"Well?"
Jyra was quite disappointed with the number, but it was to be expected given that Nyinth was a very young brown. It happened some times with the less experienced males. "I counted a total of twenty three." she replied trying hard to keep her disappointment out of her voice for her gold's sake as well as Z'al's.
"That's what I counted," Z'al couldn't miss the slight disappointment in her voice. He tried to smile. He had hoped it would be more. He looked over the eggs his brown had sired and sighed. Nyinth had done his best.
There was no helping it. He put on a smile and turned to the other two.
Dirwol looked from one to the other. Both seemed disappointed. He put a comforting hand on Jyra's shoulder. "We shall share your joy with everyone. Do not think of it as only twenty three but as twenty three new dragons to fight for Pern. They shall be strong. The weyrlings from this clutch will be close and fight well."
Z'al saw that they needed a moment alone and bowed. "I shall go." He smiled as he slipped out. He wasn't sure how he felt about this clutch. He felt like he could have done something better. He kept his doubts from his lifemate in hopes to spare him.
Dirwol didn't even notice the brownrider leave. He turned Jyra around to face him and took her chin and tilted it toward him. "Don't worry so." without knowing why he gently pressed his lips to hers. He gently pulled her close.
"I can't help it." she replied looking into his eyes. She felt better when she realized that he was right. There would be twenty three new dragonriders in the near future. She heard the children's voices from behind her and pulled back from his kiss reluctantly.
"Dirwol, these are my children. This is my oldest, Jyrakon. His sisters are Nokera and Kerobi. My youngest is with his aunt who fosters them for me. Did you come to see the eggs?" she said introducing the harper with a smile.
Jyrakon nodded and glanced around his mother to see the eggs. "How many are there?" he asked curiously. It looked like there were a lot of them. He was impatiently waiting until he was old enough to be a candidate and Impress.
Nokera decided to take a guess, "A hundred?" she ventured excitedly.
Kerobi shook her head and said, "Silly, there can't be a hundred dragon eggs. There's got to be less than that. More like forty."
Jyramikah laughed and said, "There are twenty three eggs and one very tired gold. I suggest that we go get something to eat and let everyone know that the eggs are on the Sand."
"Hello younglings." He smiled as he offered his arms to the two girls. "Lets go spread the news." Of course he had to get on his knees to be able to offer his arms properly. He looked rather silly trying to walk on his knees to make the girls giggle. He had a love of children.
Jyramikah watched as Dirwol entertained her girls by being silly. She realized how wonderful this young man was and that she was lucky to have him. She could tell that he would be a good distraction from being on the Sands all day long. It looked as if the children adored him as much as she did, which had never happened before. This was definitely different from all the other clutches.
