"Where's my favorite nephew? There you are!" Nyblek said as he walked through the door of the cot unannounced. "Uh oh. What's with the sad eyes, huh?"
"The flits don't want to play with him any longer, he was too rough with them," Dawyn told from sofa, where he laid with a book. "Aw... I'll play with you," the apprentice grinned as he held his arms out to the boy. "Come on, Kelwyn, were's your smile, huh? Don't you want to give Uncle Ny that big smile of yours? Oh, there it is," he beamed as the little boy's face broke into a large grin. "Yeah, that's my smiling boy." His uncle gave him a tickling poke in the tummy as a reward which just brought out the little boy's giggles.
"So, what brings you here, Nyblek?" Dawyn asked causually, while deep down he wondered why Kelwyn wasn't giving him _that_ happy greeting. He was the boy's father after all. "Actually, I was looking for Keles. Is she about?" He swept the little boy up in his arms and lifted him high above his head. Kelwyn's frustration over losing the pretty winged playthings was lost as he now had his favorite toy, his uncle.
"No, she went to fetch fresh bread from the bakers. Should be back shortly. How's your studies going?" Dawyn answered. "Oh, not too bad. Your notes are really helpful. Very detailed. Aren't they Kelwyn? Yes," he grinned, rocking the boy back and forth above his head as the little one screamed his delight. "Yes, that's right, they are very very helpful to Uncle Ny! Come on, let's get your blocks. Wanna play with your blocks? Where's his blocks, Dawyn?"
"Uh, if they are not spread around the floor, there's a basket of his toys in a corner," Dawyn replied. "Well, I don't see any toys out, so I think we better check the basket, don't you think?" He threw the little boys legs around his neck and walked him over to the corner. Holding the boy's hands carefully to keep him stead he leaned over and peered into the basket. "There they are! Wanna play with them? Is it ok if we take the blocks out, Dawyn?"
"Sure, why not. Just make sure to clean them away when you're finished." "Yeah, we will. Won't we little one?" Nyblek picked the little boy off his shoulders and set him down in the middle of the floor. Kelwyn did not like that one bit and began screaming in fear that he was being left again. He raised his little hands in the air, begging to be picked back up. "Don't worry, Kelwyn, I'm just getting your blocks. I'm not leaving you."
"Look what you did, made him wail again," Dawyn said with irritated voice. "I know, I'm sorry. He'll stop in just a moment," he said picking up the basket and walking back to the little boy. Nyblek plopped the basket down and picked up the red faced child. "All right, Kelwyn, all right. See? I didn't leave you. I'm right here." He bounced the little boy up and down, but the infant was still seriously displeased that he would try to leave him and let him know. "Shhhhh... It's ok, we can play together. See?" The young man sat down on the ground next to the basket with the child still clinging to his shirt weeping.
"You're cosseting him too much," Dawyn said.
"But if I don't hold him he'll just cry more," Nyblek protested. Shards, what was wrong with his brother-in-law all of a sudden?
What was bother Dawyn was the green-eyed monster of envy and jealousy. Kellwyn seemed to like his uncle better than his father. Of course, if the smith would had bothered to do little self study, he would have noticed how Nyblek spent time and played with Kellwyn, while he, even when he was present, just did his own stuff and let other care for his son. Even when Keles was away, Dawyn let the boy amuse himself and only did what he had to. Like changed him to dry nappies.
Nyblek could tell that sometimes, just sometimes, Dawyn would get angry at him, and he couldn't quite figure out why. As he handed the little boy a block to gain his interest he glanced over at his brother-in-law, trying to judge his mood. He knew Dawyn and his sister sometimes had problems, but they didn't talk about it in front of him. Shards, but he hoped he wasn't a problem for them too. Sometimes he got the feeling he was... Dawyn tried to beat back the monster. He really liked Nyblek, but the way he almost lived in their home was...irritating. The young man almost jumped up in his relief when a shadow passed by their window. "Oh, I think Keles is back." Good. Maybe she could make things feel... right again...
"Maybe I should get some klah going. You would like a cup, wouldn't you?" "Yes, please," Nyblek said, mustering a smile.
"All right," Dawyn said and got up.
Nyblek went back to playing with Kelwyn, as quietly as possible.
