Liannor

The next day she invited him out to hunt for firelizard eggs after drills. She has seen his little queen and heard he’d found the clutch that hatched her. She could, she admitted, use his guidance. N’kevyn was only too happy to oblige, though he felt the faintest twinge of guilt at not letting Aydhara know he was going firelizard hunting without her. Besides, he’d heard she’d gone with that young goldrider.

They stayed just long enough to grab his firelizard call and foldable sand rake, and then chased the sun to the beach-- and the hunt was on. They pursued each other over the sandy dunes, trading looks and swapping stories about themselves and gossip from their weyrs. Looking for firelizard tracks quickly became secondary, especially after N’kevyn took off his shirt.

By sunset they had exhausted the dunes and reached the tall cliffs that lined the shore. There were wide ledges and deep nooks that seemed ripe for eggs. So they had begun to climb.

Liannor had the lead, competitive to a fault, but also agile and light and deceptively strong. She paused halfway up the cliff face, edging out onto a ledge to check for nests before peering down to check for her partner. She grinned at the sight. “Much as I enjoy seeing you below me… I thought you’d be faster. Have you been distracted by the view?”

“Yes, let’s call that the reason I’m falling behind. The lovely distracting scenery,” N’kevyn was more winded than he cared to admit. It was harder to haul himself up the cliff than it was to lift well balanced weights in the Weyr’s workout area. “Are we even sure they nest in cliffs? The merchant who sold me my rake didn’t mention that.” Of course a foldable rake wouldn’t have been a useful tool for cliff hunting. He ignored the quiet, steady criticism in his mind that suggested he just accept a lift up the cliff, since he was clearly so bad at climbing. He cared even less that he was embarrassing his bronze in front of the green.

}:You're embarrassing yourself,:{ Avicath sounded like that was a fate worse than death.

**I'm embarrassing you. There's a difference.**

}:There is not, you are me.:{

He’d long since stopped bothering to argue with that and kept climbing.

“I admit most research suggests the little golds prefer sandy beaches, which is probably the sensible choice,“ Liannor answered breezily from above. “But there are records of greens tucking their eggs away on cliffs or in caves. I always wanted to find one for myself… not because I particularly want one--I think they're pests really--but there's something about the thrill of the chase, don't you agree?”

Crouching on the ledge she grinned at the bronzerider as he hauled himself up to join her.

“Pests? I'll have you know my wonderful Citrine is nothing but useful. You never know when you might need a half a dozen missmatched earrings or a shiny spoon.” N'kevyn flopped there for a moment, trying to catch his breath.

Reaching up, he casually grabbed her wrist, feigning an attempt to pull her down next to him. She could resist, of course. “The chase is fun, but it only makes the catch the sweeter.”

“Yes,” Liannor purred. She didn't resist his pull, falling against him -- half on the rock, half on his bare chest -- she smiled down at N'kevyn and leaned in to kiss him, sweet and warm--

And then she was on her feet again and climbing. “So come catch me!” she laughed.

He was content to lean into the kiss, hand going up to touch her face when she suddenly pulled away. “Oh, you sneaky little--” N’kevyn scrambled to his feet to chase after her, much better on the horizontal than the vertical. “If I get my hands on you, I’m tossing you over my shoulder just so you’ll hold still for a moment!”

He and his laughter chased her up the cliff.
