Luck was draped around her neck like an animate torc, his eyes glittering a peaceful blue as his owner bore him through the corridors of Dolphin Hall that morning, on her way to join the other dolphineers at breakfast. Through the windows, sunlight streamed in: it was a cloudless start to the day. Noreia looked forward to taking a morning swim with Gar or Tiva before her duties took over.

She grabbed a cup of klah and had just sat down at one of the tables, greeting her fellow senior apprentices, when the clanging of the dolphin's bell could be heard. "I'll see to it," she said to the nearest journeyman that had also risen. Taking the morning report from the dolphins was good practice for the apprentices.

Luck took wing, circling acrobatically above her as she strode towards the bell, its insistent "report" sequence clanging with every increasing frequency. As she neared, she could see that the water churned with gray fins: was the entire pod here? That was odd. "I'm here, I'm here," she said evenly as she neared. Squees of joy and urgency greeted her. Crossing her legs, she sat at the edge of the dock and said, "Report."

Amidst the chorus of soprano voices, one word emerged. And Noreia's stomach sank.

She snapped her fingers to Luck, asking him to retrieve something for her to write on and with. As the firelizard disappeared on his errand, Noreia began to ask the dolphins questions.

How many days away was it? One, maybe two.

How fast was it approaching? Slow. Not good. Slow meant more time to prepare but that it also had time to build.

What was the temperature of the water around it? Warm. Also not good.

Where was it heading? Weyr. Maybe a bit west of it.

What did the pressure feel like near it? Low. Another terrible indicator. Noreia's stomach dropped further.

The cloudless day above her suddenly felt like a pressing omen. Luck returned and Noreia began jotting down the information, asking a few more questions: wind speed, rainfall, any ships in the area, etc. She was right about the whole pod being there. They were ready to act. They had already warned two ships on their way back in. Now it was the Hall's turn to warn others.

Noreia was no journeyman -- a master would have to execute the Hall's plan -- but at least she felt authorized enough to say, "Three of you return to it and report back with an update by mid afternoon. The rest wait here for further commands."

Now, her lithe legs carried her back towards the dining room, where the rest of the Hall was digging into their breakfast, unaware that their amiable start to the day was about to be disrupted by one singular word.

Hurricane.
