Found this in my drafts folder!

A pink jagged scar ran from the top of her foot down the outside toward her toes. It was maybe a bit cold to be sitting on the steps to the weyrling dormitories, staring at her foot as the sun set. She was supposed to be helping clean the barracks but they were clean enough from the cleaning the weyrlings had given them the day before, and the day before that, she'd thought.

One of the Weyrlingstaff would probably yell at her for ditching, she thought. Probably M'thos.

The scar was pretty sick. It looked a little like a lightning bolt now that it had healed. The first sevenday after she'd been stepped on had been the worst, although the day she'd gotten it she'd barely felt it...

Donnise staggered off the Sands in a daze, followed by Zheverith and a trail of crimson blood. She'd Impressed. After Turns on the Sands, she'd nearly been run over by a huge blue dragonet and turned around to find herself nose to nose with a littler one.

Zheverith, who changed everything. Her blood fizzed and she felt like she was walking on air. Flying-- they'd be flying together soon enough!

Her mother was going to kill her. Maybe Saibra, too. She was supposed to Impress at Far Island, not Dragonsfall Weyr! But then Zheverith found her - a _blue_ dragon! Just like her father. How was this even possible?!

}:Im hungry,:{ Zheverith whined. }:I smell food. Where is it?:{

His voice was loud in her head. Donnise blinked as a healer appeared in front of her like he'd materialized out of thin air. He took her by the elbow and guided her to a chair just inside the exit from the Sands. "Sit, let me take a look."

Zheverith nudged his nose against her other side. }:I'm HUNGRY.:{

"Hmm? Just a minute..." Donnise hovered over the chair as the healer shoved her into the seat and knelt at her side. She reached out toward Zheverith and he headbutted her palms. His hide was impossibly soft and still a bit sticky from the inside of his egg. She should have taken a shell from his egg as a memento, but then again she now had a whole dragon as a memento.

}:HUNGRY!!:{

"This is deep," the healer muttered. He poked her foot and Donnise's breath came out in a pained hiss. "You'll need stitches."

"Just wait," Donnise said, but Zheverith was starting to bound down the hallway away from her. She surged out of her seat and promptly kneed the healer in the lip. He yelped and fell backward and Donnise staggered as pain flared in her foot.

}:Noooo! Stop being hurt!:{ Zheverith skidded to a halt and looked over his shoulder at her with whirling, guilty eyes. His wings started to droop. }:Did I do that? I didn't mean to do that!:{

"I know, I'm sorry!" Donnise wasn't sure if she was speaking to her dragon or the healer. She winced. "I just-- hang on, let me think!"

}:I'm HUNGRY!:{ Zheverith's belly growled loud enough to be heard over the cheering from the crowd outside.

"You need to come to the Infirmary," the healer said.

Donnise shook her head. "I'm hungry," she whispered. "No wait, Zheverith is hungry. I'm sorry."

He touched a hand to his lip and winced. It was already starting to swell. "We'll have meat for Zheverith in the Infirmary. You're not the first weyrling to get hurt on the Sands, and you won't be the last. Come on, the both of you." He took her firmly by the elbow and started guiding her away from the corridor that led to the weyrling barracks.

}:You're going the wrong way!:{ Zheverith wailed. }:I can smell the meat this way!:{

"I know, I'm sorry, we have to go this way first!" she called to him. "Come with me, Zheverith." She could feel the ache in his legs and the ravenous void in his belly. Or maybe she was hungry, and it was her own foot that hurt. It was so hard to tell.

}:But the FOOD!:{ Zheverith's wings drooped as he turned and staggered after her. }:Come back!:{

"There's food in the Infirmary. Right?" She looked up at the healer as she took another pained, limping step. Shells and shards, her foot _hurt_.

"We'll have meat, but nothing for you," the healer said. "You'll have to wait until lunch."

Lunch was _candlemarks_ from now. Donnise groaned.

}:Hungry... so hungry...:{ Zheverith's dragging footsteps followed her down the hall. }:Maybe there will be enough meat for us both?:{

"Maybe," she said, and she wasn't sure who she was talking to - Zheverith, the healer, or herself. It felt like an omen. This was going to be the rest of her life.

Donnise smiled. "This is the best day ever," she said under her breath.

"Hmm?"

}:What did you say?:{

"Meat," she said enigmatically. It seemed like a good enough response to them both.
