"Hey, uh, M'sar!" E'rian called as he trotted forward with Inarayth hop-gliding behind. She was getting big, _quick_, but still not big enough to catch her own food. "Does Nazoth mind sharing a haunch or something? Inarayth is hungry. She skipped breakfast this morning."
M'sar arched an eyebrow. The guy had been a Candidate with him but otherwise M'sar didn't know him much. "Go cut up your own food."
"I don't need it cut up," E'rian explained quickly. Shells, this could go south quick. "Just, a leg ripped off or something. Inarayth can feed herself big chunks. She just can't catch it." He shot M'sar a pleading, hopeful look as he thought about how weyrlings should be helping each other.
"You want my dragon to do your job?" M'sar asked cooly as Nazoth tore into a herdbeast.
E'rian blew out a breath in an attempt to reset his feelings. He didn't really think that what he was asking was a lot. Or was it?
}: It's not, :{ Inarayth said to him. And then, before E'rian could stop her, she marched right up to M'sar and said to Nazoth, }: Why is your rider being rude? You aren't going to eat that entire herdbeast. You can share some with me. And tell your rider to be nicer to mine. :{
Nazoth lifted his head, dripping gore from his jaws. }:You would like some food?:{ He was, in fact, going to eat the entire herdbeast. }:I will hunt for you!:{ He spread his wings and launched his massive bulk into the sky.
**What are you doing?**
}:Inarayth wants some food. I will show her how well I hunt.:{ The brown glided over the panicked animals to select a victim. }:She is only a baby, like Ibranth.:{
M'sar rolled his eyes. "Should've asked him in the first place. Feckin' softie." But he couldn't help the slight fondness in his tone.
"Thanks, Nazoth!" E'rian called jovially, though he was still a bit annoyed at Inarayth for barging in like that. He shot the older weyrling what he hoped was a convincing smile. "See? That wasn't so hard."
M'sar shrugged a shoulder. "Should've fed your dragon when you were supposed to."
Nazoth dropped onto a smaller herdbeast, the animal's cries cutting off with a loud snap. Picking up his kill, he hop-skipped over to the fence and dropped the carcass near Inarayth. }:See? I am a powerful hunter.:{
}: You are, :{ Inarayth agreed with sugared coquettishness. She eagerly set into her meal.
"I tried," E'rian told M'sar in a slightly exasperated tone. "She just didn't want to eat then. She wasn't hungry." But now that she was eating and the matter was passing, he exhaled a long breath. "She's a bit of a handful," he vented to M'sar.
"A weyrling that ain't hungry? That's a new one on me," M'sar said. "Even with Nazoth about full grown, I gotta watch so he doesn't eat the whole pen."
E'rian snorted. "Inarayth seems to have taken the opposite approach. She eats _when_ she wants to and can't be coerced otherwise." But luckily, she didn't eat much. Not as much as a big dragon like Nazoth would. "She can't be coerced to do lots of things if she doesn't want to. Was yours like that? Headstrong?" As he asked, his eyes idly roamed M'sar's frame.
"He can be stubborn, but he usually listens pretty good when I explain things to him." M'sar noticed E'rian looking and his eyebrow arched curiously. Was asking for a favor his attempt at flirting?
"Lucky," E'rian said with a chuckle. When M'sar caught him looking, he quickly looked away. A faint blush colored his cheeks. He hadn't intended to be looking at the other man with flirty thoughts. It just...sorta happened.
Inarayth immediately pounced on her rider's emotions. }: What are you thinking about? Why are you embarrassed? Why were you looking at him like that? :{
E'rian let out a groan. "Oh, come _on_," he complained. Was she ever going to let him have a lick of privacy? He _really_ didn't want to answer truthfully as to why he had been looking over M'sar.
}: Why? Why are you hiding it? Why won't you answer me? :{ Inarayth trumpeted imperiously.
**Let it _go_, Inarayth,** E'rian begged. **I was just looking at him. That's all.**
}: You're lying. You were looking at him for a reason. What reason? :{
Now, E'rian rolled his eyes. **Because he's cute, okay?! There. Happy? He's cute. He's nice to look at. Shells, Inarayth, can you just give me some privacy?**
Inarayth rattled her wings and hissed. }: You are _mine_, not his. Don't forget that. :{
"Wouldn't dream of it," E'rian muttered. To M'sar, he cleared his throat and said, "Sorry. She uh...she's relentless sometimes. Possessive is probably a better term for it."
"She upset you're having naughty thoughts about me?" M'sar teased.
At the same time, Nazoth asked Inarayth, }:What is upsetting you, little one?:{ He'd gone back to his own meal but the young green's distress made him pause.
Inarayth's head swiveled towards Nazoth. }: He hides his thoughts. He won't let me see some things. I am his dragon! I should see it all! :{
"She's...upset that I don't let her run around my head freely. Sometimes a man just wants some privacy, you know? Without having to explain every little piece of a thought."
"Yeah, I get that. Especially when you're not supposed to be thinking certain thoughts, yeah?" M'sar said with a smile.
}:Sometimes our riders hide things from us because they do not want to upset us,:{ Nazoth told her.
}: It upsets me more that he hides it! :{ Inarayth snapped.
Now E'rian blushed. "Uh...yeah, that," he admitted sheepishly.
M'sar laughed, but then he turned serious. "A few thoughts here and there ain't bad, but . . . don't push it. The Weyrlingmasters aren't kidding when they tell you not to mess around."
E'rian let out a sharp huff of laughter. "Trust me. It's not the Weyrlingmasters that I'm afraid of. It's my father. He's the Weyrdragonhealer."
"It's not about who's gonna yell at you," M'sar said. "It . . . it actually might hurt him. Your dragon."
The weyrling greenrider had always heard that it would hurt the dragons but never had anyone gone into detail. "How?" he asked cautiously.
M'sar shifted uncomfortably. "They're too young to understand. All those intense emotions and thinkin' so much about someone else . . . They can get confused and scared and think you're abandoning them or something."
Nazoth looked up from his last bits of herdbeast and crooned, sending love to his rider.
E'rian let out another huff, this one wry. "Yeah, that's the last thing I need with Lady Possessive over there," he muttered with a jerk of his chin towards Inarayth. "She'd probably ask me why I like being on bot---uh....anyway."
Interest lit in M'sar's eyes. "Come see me when she's old enough."
The other weyrling flushed. Cleared his throat. Looked at his dragon, who was blessedly unaware of whatever conversation they were having. For once. "S-Sure," E'rian answered. He focused on Inarayth tearing up her meal. **Almost done?**
}: Yes, :{ came the savage reply as she ripped a final chunk free. He watched as she wolfed it down and then as she hop-glided over to him. }: Thanks again, Nazoth, :{ she said to the brown. Her head swiveled back to her rider. }: And now you can bathe me. :{
E'rian rolled his eyes. "Never a rest for a weyrling," he complained lightly. "See you, M'sar."
}:You're welcolme, Inarayth,:{ Nazoth said pleasantly as he licked his chops.
"See ya." M'sar _was_ going to behave himself, but he couldn't help a little smirk as the greenrider walked away.
