Some One New

Date Posted: 10th September 2005

Characters: Renner, N'solyn
Description: Renner makes new friends in N'solyn and his children
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 1 of Turn 3

N'solyn had the children for the entire day since it was a restday. He cherished the time he spent with them. Kyaira and Aridin had wanted to go see the dolphins. Simeith was more than happy to come along as he liked the dolphins as well. The blue landed on the beach sending up a cloud of dust when his weight unsettled the sand.

The children scrambled down as fast as they could in their eagerness to reach the water's edge. Kyaira had hold of Aridin's hand like the responsible six turn old she was. He had never met another child quite like his daughter.

There were several dolphins playing just off the coast that were more than happy to come see the children who squealed with delight as the dolphins swam closer to them.

One of them pulled on his dorsal fin a dolphineer who waved at the children screaming with delight on the shore. Letting go of his obliging currier, Renner closed the distance between the dolphins and the children. "Well, hello there. What are your names?"

Kyaira just looked back at her father for help as she was scared. She had never seen a man come in with the dolphins before. Her brother had no such qualms about approaching the strange man, however.

Aridin grinned at the man and said, "Aridin. Nice to meet you." His foster mother was always after him to be polite and it was beginning to sink in a bit. He wanted to be able to ride with the dolphins like that when he was bigger. Da wouldn't let him go into the water by himself because he was little enough to be swept away by the waves.

"I'm Renner. Nice to meet you too, Aridin. And your sister?" The dolphineer asked as he wiped drips of water from his face.

N'solyn closed the distance between him and the children coming to stand behind his daughter and lightly resting his hand on her shoulder in comfort. He listened to his son who answered the question excitedly before nodding to the dolphineer, "I hope the children haven't intterupted anything. I'm N'solyn and these two scamps have a love for the sea and dolphins. I wouldn't be surprised if they become dolphineers instead of dragonriders."

"I hear they can be both." The dolphineer reached out his hand. "I'm Journeyman Renner."

"Nice to meet you, Journeyman Renner. The frolicking blue over there is Simieth. I think he enjoys playing with the dolphins more than these two do." N'solyn said with a chuckle as he gestured to where the blue was letting the dolphins jump over his tail.

Renner turned to admire the blue splashing in the waves. "Oh yes, the dolphins adore dragons. He is a beautiful color!"

"I think the feeling is mutual. Thank you."

"And these two are yours as well, I take it?" Renner asked, smiling down at the brave little boy and his shy sister.

"That they are, although I think Kyaira likes to think otherwise sometimes." he said with a grin when the little girl shook her head emphatically.

"Kyaira? You're weyrmate?" Renner asked curiously.

Before her father could answer, Kyaira spoke up. She didn't want her da to have to explain the story. It made him sad when he talked about their mother. "I'm Kyaira! Da doesn't like girls, that's why he's a bluerider." she said as if that explained everything.

"Ah," Renner said with a nod. He was more amused by the girl's answer than shocked. "Yes, that would make sense. Nice to meet you, Kyaira."

"It's nice to meet you too, Journeyman." she replied with a big smile for the dolphineer.

"Would you like to have a meal with us the next time you are up at the Weyr?" N'solyn asked taking a liking to the dolphineer just by the way he treated the children. It was important to him that his friends were able to handle being around his children from time to time.

"Why thank you, I would." Renner had not made many friends at the Weyr, though the dragonriders he had come in contact with seemed nice enough.
And sometimes, Renner just could not stay at the Dolphin Hall.
Sometimes he needed to get out.

"If you have flit, send me a message or we can always set a day."

"I must admit, I have never had time for pets. I have the dolphins, afterall," Renner said with an apologetic shrug. "Can we set a day?"

"Sure, what's good for you." the bluerider asked with a grin.

"How about the next restday?" Renner asked hopefully.

"That sounds fine by me." N'solyn replied excited about the thought of having someone besides his wingmates and children to spend time with.

"All right then. Next restday." The dolphineer was also excited about the possibility. The dolphin hall had become dull, predictable, and too many people knew too much about him there. It would be nice to meet someone _new_.

"Until next restday, then. I should get these hatchlings back to their fostermother before it gets too late. It was very nice to meet you, Renner."

"And you too, N'solyn." Renner gave him a grin before wading back into the water to return to the playing dolphins.

N'solyn nodded and herded the children towards the waiting blue. He knew they were tired enough that it would be easier to ride rather than walk back to the weyr. He never knew what would happen when he went places with his children.
