Birigundi

Birigundi

Rigella came out from the nessesary with a frown on her face. Still nothing, despite the ache on her lower belly and on her breasts, which usually meant her menstruation was about to start. But now she was late, very late. She picked up her calendar and made few calculations. It was possible.

She flopped back to her bed and sighed. This morning was not starting well. Of course, there were other reason why she could be late, gynaecological reasons. In both cases, she would have to check herself with a journeyman. But considering her age, she was more likely to be pregnant. Just what she needed, another complication to her life! She tried to remember if she had taken her preventive tea, but couldn't. With everything going on in her life, things like that had completely slipped from her mind. Rigella groaned. With resignation, she got up from the bed again and picked her clothes. She studied her image in the mirror.
She looked like normal and felt normal too, except the before mentioned soreness. She pulled the shirt on. Was it little tight around chest? She couldn't be sure, she didn't usually pay attention to things like that.
Her stomach rumbled, reminding her that her body had it's needs. She quickly finished dressing and went to the dining hall. And who just happened to be in the breakfast line before her? "Morning, Birigundi." It sounded more like a grunt than greeting. "Good morning, Rigella," the candidate grinned as he gave her a broad grin. "How are you today?"

His cheeriness was even more depressing. "Grumpy," Rigella replied. "Uh oh," he said, his smile falling just a little. "Is something wrong? Or did the day just start too early for you?"

"Just having a bad start for a day," Rigella said. Maybe klah would help...or maybe not, when the smell of it made her stomach churn. Now, that she thought of it, she didn't take klah yesterday either and day before that she only drink a half a mug since it didn't seem to go well with her digestation. She suppressed a groan and took juice instead. "Anything I can do to make it better?" he asked, reaching out to give her shoulder a squeeze. Birigundi didn't dare do more than that. No one knew that he had been offering her comfort since her father died, and that was the way she wanted it. He did, after all, have quite a reputation.

"No, sorry," Rigella replied curtly. "Now don't be that way," Birigundi said quietly. "I worry about you when you sound so upset."

"That's nice of you, but this time you can't help," Rigella replied, same time wondering how he would take it if she just told him what she suspected. They would probably end up both upset. "You'll tell me if you need me, won't you?" he asked softly.

"Of course I will," Rigella managed a smile. "Good. I don't like to think of you being alone when you're upset," he said as he poured them each a glass of juice. "You just send Fellis Leaf to me anytime."

"Sure, sure," Rigella replied. "Come on, who are you eating breakfast with?"

"Sorry, I'm being distracted and not much of a company," Rigella said. "You can still eat with me. Maybe I can cheer you up a bit?" Birigundi asked, giving her a hopeful smile.

"You can try," Rigella replied. In her mind, she was trying to decide to which healer to go to. Journeyman Kharis was nice one and his specialty was midwifing. However journeywoman Lantille had even more experience but she was rather busy. "Well, if you're willing to give it a go, then there's still hope for the day yet," he said, his smile spreading into a confident grin. If there was one thing he was good at, it was making girls smile, one way or another.
