You don't know what you want

Writers: Cali, Rebecca
Date Posted: 25th July 2006

Characters: O'ran, Mosler
Description: Orlan tells Mosler he's been searched and the hallmaster tells him that he can not go
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 12, day 28 of Turn 3

"Father,." Orlan's stance was proud and frim, unusal for the boy when he was around his father. "I've be searched."

Mosler had been taking a nap in his favorite chair when his son had burst into his study, "What?" he sleepily asked as he sat up and straightened his tunic.

"I've been searched, green Degorath of Dolphin Cove told her rider she thought I could impress."

At first, Mosler just stared at his son in disbelief. It took his sleepy mind a few moments to get the implication of what his son was saying straight. Finally he told him, "But you don't want to be a _dragonrider_, you want to be a _dolphineer_. You can't do both you know."

"I want to try. What if there is a hatchling for me and I'm not there?" Orlan couldn't belive his father, had the man never dreamed of impressing?

Mosler shook his head, he'd heard that line before; just like the dragonriders to try and guilt his son into standing. "Orlan, you don't have to go just because you're afraid a dragon will die if you aren't there. There will be more than enough boys and girls _without_ promising futures that the dragons can pick from."

"But I want to go. The greenrider wasn't the only one who said I'd make a good rider. Shauni's brother said it too."

The boy was just talking nonsense now; he _wanted_ to go? "What do you mean you want to go? You're twelve turns old, you don't know what you want."

"I know I want this." Orlan couldn't belive his father was talking this way. It was fine when he said he wanted to become a dolphineer but not to stand?

Mosler just shook his head. His son was _not_ going to stand for a hatching. He was too young and he had no clue as to the real life of a dragonrider; the real dangers. "Orlan, you can't stand now. We'll talk about in a few turns when you're older, when you're able to understand your mind fully."

"It's my right to stand father, I've been searched and I'm going to the hatching."

"You are _not_!" Mosler all but bellowed at his son. "I have made my decision and that's _final_." The boy needed to learn his place, being the Hallmaster's son must have gone to his head.

**And I've made mine.** the boy thought to himself. **I'm going to the Weyr.**

"And I want you to stay away from those dragonriders, you understand?"
Mosler said, realizing that the continual recruiting they had been doing must have influenced Orlan away from the dolphins.

Orlan bit back a shape reply, he knew angering his father more than he was would be dangours. He had to find a way to the Weyr. Even if he had to walk.
