Prepare for awkwardness

So have you done it yet?" Karri's hesitant voice questioned as she sat alone with Kamira for a late dinner. Kamira almost choked. She half coughed and half laughed once the danger had passed. "Karri! I never expected something like that to come out of _your_ mouth!"

Karri grimaced, "I know... I've wanted to ask you about it, but couldn't think of a good way to ease into the subject... so I just blurted it out!"

"No, I'm glad you're asking if you have questions." Kamira squeezed the girl's hand for a moment. "Even if you almost kill me when you do it! And yes, I have had sex." She smiled.

She knew she shouldn't be embarrassed about the subject, it was a normal and natural part of being a dragonrider, but she was still trying to shed those holdbred rules. Before she had gotten her scar, she had gotten beaten by her mother for going off alone with a boy. They had only been friends and hadn't done anything, but the mere _idea_ that they could have been was enough. She had gotten over the fear of being alone with a man fairly quickly at the Weyr, but it still made her uncomfortable in places like the bathing rooms where there was a chance for intimacy. "Have you... Did you ask somebody to help you, like the weyrling staff said, or was it from before you impressed?" The thought of _asking_
someone to _practice_ something like that was daunting to her. Kamira hid a smile. "It was before I was a weyrling, and I hardly asked for help. Maybe it's harder for Holdbreds to understand, but a tumble is an easy thing to figure out by yourself." She winked.

Karri wanted to roll her eyes but refrained, "I know the practicals Kamira, but it's not as _easy_ as you make it out to be. I've never even _kissed_ a boy before!"

Kamira understood - actually, she didn't understand, but she didn't let her phase her. "Well, why don't you start asking questions and we'll go from there?" **Prepare for awkwardness...**

"Well... how do I let a boy know that I'm interested in him as more than a friend?" Karri started, regretting she had even brought up the subject but deciding she might as well just dive right in. "I _thought_ I knew, but either I don't or the boy I've tried it with wasn't interested back. I hope it's not my scar, they say in the Weyr that scars aren't an issue, but what if it is, and what do I do about that? How do I go about and get experience if nobody is interested in me because I'm ugly?"

"First," Kamira gave her friend an affectionate smile, "not all men here are like that. You'll run into a few tunnel snakes that want perfect women, but some men are truly kind."

Karri snorted, "Great, so I'll guilt the kind ones into sleeping with me. I still don't know how to get him to notice me..."

"So there's *is* a 'him'?!" As long as she had known the girl, Kamira had never known Karri to be interested in a man - not that she had ever talked about, that is.

"Well no one really in particular... but I'm not _blind_!" Karri said the last defensively, "I told you I've tried to show a boy, _boys_ even that I was interested, but I must be doing something wrong because nobody seems interested back!" "Well then be more obvious! Sometimes men are wherry brains and have to be all but _told_ what you want! Just find someone you trust - and think is attractive - and ask for what you want."

Karri sighed, "So pretty much I just have to quit being so subtle, find a cute guy, and ask him if he wants to have sex!" "You don't have to put it _that_ frankly!" She laughed. "But, essentially, yeah. That's a good plan."

"Easy for you to say... you don't actually have to _do_ it!"
