reception, not unexpected.

Gerono appeared, bobbing his head to the Hallmaster. "Master, there is a greenrider in the courtyard, asking after you, sir." Daynar muttered a bit, looking at his long-time serving man. What was with all these dragonriders coming to see _him_ lately? Had he put out a notice that he was not aware of, or did that Tsaera want them all to plague him to death?
Grumbling still, and obviously not in the best of tempers (but when was he?), the Hallmaster finally nodded. "Bring him to my office, I shall be right along." R'sedel walked into Hallmaster's office. Daynar had not yet arrived. He had heard rumors about the man, his humor or lack there of, and even rumors of a son at the Weyr. The greenrider had to admit, he was rather curious about the man. He sat unceremoniously in a chair in front of the Hallmaster's desk and waited, trying to resist the urge to snoop through the hides and play with the trinkets laid out before him. Just as he was about ready to give into temptation, he heard the door swing open and he rose to his feet politely.
Daynar froze a moment as he considered who was waiting for him. Hadn't Gerono said a _green_rider? But this was a man! His face settled into a frown. "Good day to you. I had thought Gerono said a _green_rider?" He paused. "But you must be. I'm the Hallmaster, Daynar." Daynar knew, of course, that greens chose males who liked other males as often as they chose women. But to be confronted with one... memories of his son that was his son no longer flashed, and his frown darkened still further, if that was possible. "I'm R'sedel, rider of green Eniidith and son of Weyrleader K'sedel. Thank you for seeing me." He gave the Hallmaster a respectful bow and hid his grin at the man's discomfort. Throwing out his father's name gave him that added measure of respect, but R'sedel knew full well he was not entirely welcome in many Holds and Halls.
Daynar was not at all impressed with his family ties. He had respect for dragonriders but only as it related to their duty to defend Pern from Thread, not in any other facet of their lives. Especially given how wanton they all seemed, and _these_. His eyes narrowed at R'sedel. "What do you here, young man? Not visiting any of my apprentices, I hope." "First off all, I have an order for my father to pick up," the greenrider pulled a slip from his pocket and laid on the desk before the Hallmaster, "and then, yes, I do plan on visiting with some apprentices." He fought down a smug grin.
R'sedel loved watching the hidebound squirm.
Daynar's eyes went wide and round and he glowered at the greenrider, whom he guessed might just be pricking his hide. The words were a bit clipped when they finally came. "You may have the package; I promised K'sedel it would be ready by yesterday, and so it is. However, you may _not_ visit the apprentices. They are all busy in classes right now." Daynar would not let him into the workrooms at all. It was still his Hall. "Well, sir, I would not be visiting your apprentices in a _social_ capacity. I ride a Search dragon, and as you know we recently had a Hatching. We have space in our candidate barracks and it is not too soon to start filling the empty beds. It would give the boys, and perhaps even girls, a chance to... grow accustomed to Weyr life before the next Hatching." R'sedel gave him a look that was pure innocence. After all, his father had said it wouldn't be a bad idea...
"Surely, you wouldn't refuse my right to Search."
This was quite too much for Daynar. Of _course_ he couldn't refuse Search. He would never do that; he did know they were protecting Pern and they were _needed_. But he didn't have to like them, only respect them, and do his duty by them. Which he always did!
"You mean ruin them with Weyrlife, teach them all sorts of unnatural things in the name of protecting Pern! I'll have you know I'm teaching good Southern men here, dragonrider. Life here in my Hall is quite fine, thank you." The Hallmaster growled, looking on with more than disgust. Now it was outright hostility. He took a breath to calm some of the indignation. "And how _dare_ you insinuate that I would fail in my duty to the Weyrs! I send my best to Garnet Valley to go with the tithe and I have never Refused the right to Search when there are eggs on the Sands." Daynar's eyes narrowed.
"Searching without eggs on the Sands is something I could almost refuse, R'sedel, the Weyrleader's son, since I suspect you have no need to do it this very day. But I will not refuse the Weyr." The Weyr, not R'sedel. Daynar went silent and took up the package, handing it over with far more care than his attitude showed, and said in a more normal voice, "Here is your father's package. It's a very lovely piece. Now, please do your duty and begone from my Hall."
"Yes, sir," R'sedel said with an overly respectful bow. "My father thanks you for the package," he said, dropping the pouch of marks for payment on the desk, "and the Weyr thanks you for your continuous, unwavering and heartfelt support."
Choosing to blatantly ignore the sarcasm he felt was present in every word, the Hallmaster said firmly, "As well they should. Thank your father for his business, and see about your own. If any of the boys turn up to your green dragon, please inform me immediately. Good day to you, greenrider." As a last parting remark, and in response to the bow, he finally gave the man his earned title.
