Even before the song had ended, J'mar had taken Nistaja by the hand and pulled her off the dance floor and into the shadows. Leaning her against the wall he found her lips with his, arms wrapped around her possessively. Pulling back ever so slightly, he whispered against her lips, "Sorry, I just had to do that before I went mad out there."
Nistaja laughed and kissed him again, running her fingers through his hair lightly. "What's gotten into you, J'mar? Too much wine?"
"You just look gorgeous tonight," he murmured against her neck. "I can't wait for this night to be over just so I can whisk you away to my weyr and have my way with you."
Since she'd actually taken the time to clean up and find a nice looking dress, the compliment made her smile. "I'm glad you appreciate all the time I spent scrubbing off the mud."
"Oh, now, you know I love you covered in mud. I love helping scrub the mud off of you too." But she was exceedingly beautiful when she put her mind to it. "Shards, Nistaja, I would love you any way you come."
They were pressed into a secluded enough corner that Nistaja didn't mind the way his hands were wandering. "You know, it's not like we couldn't slip off for a candlemark and come back later... No one would miss us."
"Hmmm, I like that idea. I could take you back to my weyr and we could bring in the new Turn right. Although," he pulled back slightly to look down into her eyes. "It would be even more meaningful if I could take you back to _our_ weyr."
Nistaja tried to laugh it off, not wanting to bring up a sore subject on a night that was meant to be a celebration. "Oh, I don't know. I think it could be meaningful right here, if we put our minds to it..."
"You know what I mean, Nistaja," he said, wrapping his arms around her.
"I love you, and I think you love me too, right?"
"Of course," she replied quickly. "But that doesn't have anything to do with where we live, J'mar."
"Exactly. Why should it matter _where_ we live?" He leaned in to give her neck soft, almost pleading kisses. "We spend practically every night together as it is. Why not make it official?"
"Because we don't spend _every_ night together," she replied, pushing his face back gently. "J'mar, I know you love me. But you'd get bored if I was the only person in your life. I don't mind the nights you spend with other people, but I don't think it would be so easy if we didn't each have our own space."
"Well, we can go to _their_ spaces then. And you _do_ have your own space. You have your workshop. And I want you to be wherever my space is. Come on, Nistaja," he said, giving her his largest, most pleading eyes. "We love each other. We could make it work. We could at least give it a try, right?"
She tried to slide away from him, hating the way he was looking at her.
"J'mar... please don't do this. We were having such a good time."
"Shard it, Nistaja," he groaned as he let go of her. "We're always having a good time. That's what I'm trying to tell you. What I've been trying to tell you for months. I want this to be _more_ than just a good time. It sharding well is more than that to me! I'm sorry if that spoils your fun."
Nistaja sighed. "Don't twist my words, J'mar! Of course it means more to me than just a good time! But I just don't see why we have to fix something that's not broken! Why is it so important that I give up my rooms?"
"Forget it, Nistaja," he growled as he brushed past her. "If you haven't figured that out by now you never will."
Slumping back against the wall, Nistaja watched him storm off with a resigned expression. Finally she sighed and pushed herself upright, determined to go back to the dancing and enjoy herself. J'mar would get past his annoyance after she spent a night or two in her own weyr. He always did. It was part of the reason she wanted to keep it.
