Lymria was wiping jam off from Omrian's face. "Oh, you little messy face," she scolded the baby. Well, not exactly a baby anymore, since he had his first birtday and was learning to walk. She and the children were enjoying the Amber Hill's Turnover Gather, especially the bubbly pies. "Lymria, my bow got loose again," A little girl complained and held a bright red ribbon. "Okay, I'll retie it," Lymria replied and lowered the boy to the ground. She started to tie the ribbon to her hair. Meanwhile, Omrian went to explore. He walked with unsteady totter until he ran into somebody's legs. He fell on his bottom and let out a indignant:
"Baah!" Lymria turned to look. "Hi, Faran, could you bring that little adventurer to me?" she called. The youngster looked up at the tall Harper, one thumb in his mouth, his eyes on the verge of tears. "Oh,"
Faran said as he picked up Omrian. "Your ok little one, your ok." He brought him to his mother in a swinging arc over his shoulder making sounds like a flying dragon. He set the child down next to his adoptive siblings. Omrian giggled. "All better." he said, tapping the boy on the nose, who giggled even louder.
"Thank you, he's just learned to walk and I would need to have eyes on my back to keep up with him," Lymria said.
"Well I would be glad to offer my assistance in containing this band of maurading adventurers." he offered as he picked up the squirming Omrian again, who obviously wanted another "dragon" ride.
"Aren't you needed at the stage?" Lymria asked.
"Not for a while. We're trying something new this year. Before the opening dance we are having a sort of talent show, where all are welcome to show their musical abilities, to welcome the new Turn." Faran said as he hitched the squirming toddler on his hip. "Besides, I miss kids."
"Do you have children?" Lymria asked. "Or do you just teach them?" she added, remembering that he was a harper. "No I don't have children, I was refering to... my sisters." His voice stuck in his throat for a moment, before he coughed and smiled sheepishly. "But in my classes I'm more of an authority figure, not a sibling or parent." He shrugged.
Lymria was about to answer something when Torgny asked if they could have more bubbly pies. Lymria promised he could have and the little girl wanted too. She dug her pocket and found a coin that was enough for two bubblies and handed it to Torgny.
The two older children went to join the line at the baker's stall. She suddenly missed the fat pouch of marks her late husband had left her and all her jewelry, now buried under ton's of rock in Amethyst Cliff hold. "I'm sorry of the interruption, where were we?" she said.
"It was nothing. Ss how has this Turn been for you Lymria? Much better thatn mine I hope?" He asked, setting the squirming Omrian back on the ground, keeping one eye on him.
"Probably not, it's been a tough turn. It started well, with Omrian's birth, but he was only few months old when my husband died. We moved to Amethyst Cliff hold only to have it collapse around us. Relocating here and taking fosterlings hadn't been easy either,"
Lymria told. Had it all been happening only in one turn? She couldn't believe it herself.
"Wow, that is pretty bad. But there was some good in it too, Omrian, and your fosterlings. That's a positive." Faran sighed, "I wish my year had been as good. With the quake, and..." his voice caught in his throat for a moment. "Loosing my sisters, accept for Saria. And then her refusal of my offer to get North to study." He sighed. A drumroll sounded from the harper stage, signaling a brief intermision as the players switched. "I'm afriad I must be off. Save me a dance later." He winked broadly. "I'll have another break in about a half a candlemark." He walked off in the direction of the stage.
"I will," Lymria promised as he walked away. "Now, there's an interesting man, isn't there?" she remarked to her son. Omrian yawned. "And it's almost your bedtime."
