Birigundi

Birigundi

"Is your little green beauty asleep now?" Birigundi asked as Kamira emerged from the Weyrling Barracks. He had decided it was about time he faced her. After all, it had been a seven day since the Hatching. Most of the looks of pity had been borne already. For some reason he was dreading hers the most.

"Little green beauty? Oh please," Kamira scoffed.
"She's nothing but a great gullet - just a stomach with legs and disporportionate wings." She rolled her eyes, allowing a playful smile to break across her lips. "But yes, she's asleep now that she's fed, which gives me ample time to spend with you; it's been a while since I've seen you..."

"Yeah, well, I know how busy the first few sevendays of weyrlinghood are," though the Egg knows he only learned that vicariously so far.

"That's not why you stayed away." She wasn't about to let him squirm out of anything; he had to face things sooner or later. "How are you doing?" Facing things was exactly what he was sick of doing. Daily reminders faced him everyday and just about everywhere. He shrugged. "Life as usual. The Candidate barracks are quieter. A lot of my friends are either not around or are busy, but I will make new friends. Nothing new."

Kamira rolled her eyes. She knew how it felt to be skipped and watch all your friends with their new lives moving on without you. "You still have your old friends, you know."

"I didn't say I had lost them," he said with a smile. "They won't be busy caring for a Hatchling forever."
**Just long enough for a lot of things to change...**

"We're still your friends even while the Hatchlings in question need so much attention." She was starting to become a bit irritated with his behavior. "At least, I am."

He raised his hands to placate her. "I know that. Why else am I here looking for you?"

"Well you do get credit for that..." She gently took his hands in hers and lowered them. "I'm glad you came to find me."

"Why, did you miss me?" he asked with a saucy grin.

"Don't I always?" She countered sweetly.

"You didn't have a chance before." Birigundi was begining to wonder about the wisdom of flirting with a new weyrling. It was certainly setting himself up for disaster of one sort or another. Though, he had to remind himself, weyrlinghood didn't last forever...

"I did too have a chance before! I wasn't by myself that night in the bathing cavern - or in the empty class room down the hall!" She glared indignantly.
"Besides, now _you_ don't have a chance."

"I meant that you didn't have a chance to _miss_ me yet. I know we had chances for..." He shook his head. "Do you really want to talk about this? I mean, there's is nothing to be done about it now."

"Oh." Kamira said softly; she hadn't realized what Birigundi was trying to say before and now kind of regretted havign spoken so quickly. "Well, I'd still like to spend time with you; I enjoy your company, even if I can't enjoy _all_ of is just yet..." "It will come, Kamira. Weyrlinghood doesn't last forever." He smiled, but inside he knew that sometimes it felt like it. Birigundi had to admit, as far as that was concerned, he had the better part of the deal. He could find all sorts of company, and probably would, while she had to just wait.

"Easy for _you_ to say..." She grumbled.

"It's not like I won't be here when you're finished, you know," he said gently as he reached down to take her hand. "And until then, we can still be friends."

"Hah!" She laughed evilly. "Who said I was pinning for you!" She winked and gave him a "come and get me"
look.

"Well, I can assure you I won't be pinning for you long," he said with a teasing glare. Birigundi decided that he'd better not retaliate in any way in which he could "forget" there were limits now.

"We'll see about that." She smiled and walked on.

If she kept up this attitude, it was going to be a loooooong weyrlinghood...
