But she was nothing like Abrei, who was young and probably much more athletic.
"So I heard the baker boys carrying tales again." She clicked her tongue a bit.
"They try my patience, but their gossip is generally right. They heard something interesting about you."
"What about me?" U'das asked curiously and tried to remember if he had done anything worth gossiping lately. Only thing he could think of was that thing with Abrei. Had they been seen?
Sol paused; she had no trouble saying it plainly. And there was really no other way. "You and Abrei, on the beach. The boys were thinking no one could get that friendly with her." A half smile hovered at her lips; she did like the Weyr's former Weyrhealer, and all her ways. Jealousy was hardly in existence in the older woman, but she was.. surprised.. she supposed.
"Neither did I, I mean, she not exactly the type," U'das replied.
She couldn't help it; she laughed out loud. "Oh, U'das! You're right about that!"
She smiled at him. "See? Even Abrei couldn't resist you! Would you believe I was momentarily jealous? Or at least, surprised. We have been spending a great deal of time with each other, although I am getting on in turns and likely not nearly as exciting as a younger, lovely healer." She trailed off, unsure what it was that she was trying to say.
"You're far more exciting that some young woman. I can talk with you, with them it's just the sex. Look, I will always have other partners besides you. Faranth knows, I wasn't always so faitful to poor Selja either, when we were weyrmated, and I'm not talking about mating flights now. Still she bear me for over forty turns. Couple times she threw me out, when she found out, only to take me back in after few days when her temper had cooled down. No matter what, Selja and I, we understood each other, we had connection that went deep. So deep that I tried to kill myself after she was dead. With you, I feel the same kind of understanding," U'das said. He actually have to get few deep breath's after such
a long speech. Besides, it had brought back the pain of losing her. It had been three turns ago.
"Oh, U'das.." her voice was soft and she lay a hand on top of his. She wasn't sure he'd ever given her such a long speech. She was silent for a time, giving him some peace.
Her voice was soft, and warm, when she finally broke the silence. "I feel the same with you as I did with my own Weyrmate. I've been without him longer than you've been without Selja, and I know it must hurt still. Being Weyrmated to a bronzerider taught me that there is always a measure of sharing. We never know
how long we have, how many turns are left to us, so we enjoy each one without inhibitions." She paused again, tilting his chin up to kiss him gently on the lips.
"It isn't the sharing I minded, just the realization that my feelings for you are far deeper than I suspected. There is always a measure of fear when you begin to care for someone. Especially for Weyr residents, and even those without dragons."
"I know that fear," U'das said.
Her smile resurfaced followed by another kiss. "Well, maybe I shouldn't be afraid. After all, I am not some young foolish woman." The gentle teasing was replaced by seriousness. "I have, though, come to care deeply for you, U'das.
Surprising in someone I've known for so many turns. But where my life was a bit empty before, it now is full."
"I know what you mean, I feel it too," U'das replied.
There was little to say to that, and her hand traced his cheek gently for a moment. It was so scary to feel deep feeling for someone at her age, but they had both been lonely. Perhaps that had driven them together, but turns of friendship kept them together.
Sol leaned forward from her position on the corner of the table and took both his hands. Her mood shifted slightly. Her eyes were sparkling a bit in mischief. "Am I really more exciting than a younger woman?"
"Do you want me prove it to you?" U'das asked with challenge. His
self-conciousness tried weakly remind him of his duties and the hidework, but his libido firmly stamped it down. U'das pulled her to his lap.
Sol laughed the deep, self-assured laugh of a woman who knows herself, and swiveled a bit so she rubbed against some interested parts of his lap. "I'm always ready for a challenge, bronzerider. Do your worst.. or your best, as the case may be.." The bread could be made later, there were other things that needed her attention right now.
