It was with relief that the Weyrleader sat down on the chair thoughtfully provided by the healers. After what had seemed like forever, Ciara had finally given birth to their child. "How do you feel?" he asked.
Even though every part of her ached, even though her face shone still with prespiration and her eyes were hazy with exhaustion, her smile was brilliant when she looked at him. It lit her whole face. "Relieved.
Happy. Oh, Kes...she's so beautiful."
"Like her mother," he said softly. But whether he was biased or not, their daughter had the beautiful blue eyes of a newborn, topped with a little fuzz of dark hair.
Gently Ciara shifted so he could see their daughter. She was quiet now, and clean, bundled up snugly in the softest linen the Weyr had to offer.
"I told you she'd have your hair," she grinned sleepily.
"And your nose," he replied, already besotted by the child. "How do they do that?" he said, "Draw all the attention in a room to them."
"Because they are the image of perfection." Ciara nuzzled the soft down of their daughter's dark hair. "Of innocence."
"Until she grows up a little, and her brothers and sister spoil her rotten,"
teased K'sedel. "She's just perfect right now, except... She needs a name."
"I thought you had decided on one," she grinned, arching a brow in teasing inquiry.
"I had names I like, but I'm not sure if they fit her." He looked at his tiny new daughter again as she raised a tiny fist settling herself. "I can't see her as Delcira, Radela maybe?"
"Radela is pretty." Ciara looked down, gently cupping that little fist in her hand. "Radela," she crooned, smiling when the baby made a soft noise.
"Ela for short?"
"Ela," he said, testing how it sounded. "Ela, I like it."
She reached out then and caressed K'sedel's arm, fingers lingering. "So do I."
"And I'm sure her brothers and sisters will too." K'sedel smiled again, what was it about babies that made people react like that. "But they can wait a while to meet her, this time is for us."
Ciara smiled. Indeed it was. "Do you want to hold her, Kes?"
"I think it's time she met her father properly," was the reply. He reached out to take the babe, gently settling her in his arms. "You are just as beautiful as your mother," he told her.
Ela made a snuffling sound, turning her head as she felt her Papa's finger caressing her. "She'll be a heartbreaker when she grows up, won't she?"
Ciara asked with a teasing grin, closing her eyes.
"She'll be whatever she wants to be," he replied. "A greenrider like her Mama, or a crafter like one of her siblings, it doesn't matter right now."
Yawning, she looked up at her weyrmate sleepily. "Give me as kiss?"
Moving the babe slightly, he did as she asked. Life really was good right now.
